Degale loses out on mandatory spot to Chavez Jnr

Post by black panther »

Disappointing but hardly surprising that Chavez Jnr (god son of the late WBC president Jose Suleiman) was installed as WBC no.1 despite never having fought a super middleweight fighter. Where does Degale go from here? It could take 12-24 months for him to get in the mandatory spot and get a title shot now.

Shocking from the WBC, could he get a crack at Abraham for the WBO title? That would give him some leverage to try and get the winner of Froch / Groves rematch.

Abraham is due to defend on same night as Froch/Groves and DeGale is 2/3rd I believe could Bunny work with Mick and leverage his WBO relationship ?

I think Degale will be ok as Chavez is looking at fighting GGG or Froch if he beats Groves. On top of that Bika is a goldenboy fighter and they dont work with top rank and vice versa. I think it will work out ok.

Man is that disappointing. I get the feeling Degale is the kind of fighter who fights to the level of his opposition, so the higher class the better. I hope he gets a good fight if not Bika, especially seeing as thats all he seems to want, a meaningful fight.

Wasn't Chavez already No 1? I don't believe they have actually made a decision about a mandatory for Bika since Jack got beat

Degale-Jack was lined up as a final eliminator and was due for purse bids in a couple of weeks, Chavez had never boxed at Super Middle, but Jack got stopped in the first round, Chavez beat Vera, so in theory DeGale should either have been made mandatory, or given a new opponent, possibly Chavez, for the final eliminator. Instead they've shunted Chavez to the top of the rankings and made him mandatory, nothing to do with Don Jose being his Godfather and the Sulaimans being long standing family friends of course.

No, Chavez has been No 1 for about 4 months. In the latest rankings, Jack is still at No 3, so no decision has been made.
If this piece is based on the Boxing News interview, that is just part of an interview with Sulaiman while he is in England. They made him No 1 a long time ago.

Chavez Jr was ranked 1, despite never having a fight at the weight until Saturday, but DeGale-Jack was scheduled as a final eliminator, with the winner to become mandatory to Bika, if Badou Jack had won at the weekend, James DeGale's next fight would be a final eliminator for a world title, but because Jack lost, he's now left in limbo, thanks to the Mexican Boxing Council.

To be fair, it's not the WBC's fault Jack lost. They will probably offer Chavez the eliminator and if he says no, make Degale mandatory. Bika v Chavez is no done deal, because Bika is Golden Boy.

At least Chavez actually won a fight. This is a minor crime for the WBC

With the title options becoming limited, DeGale would do well to get a fight with the winner of Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye vs Chris Rebrasse and get that European title back.

I agree that he's probably at the World level now, but as long as he has a reputable belt like the European title, then it gives him a fallback position, until he does get his title shot.

All these international and intercontinental titles count for nothing. And I am sure that he is getting frustrated right now.

If he wanted to take a riskier option, there's the likes of Thomas Oosthuizen or Edwin Rodriguez who are knocking about at the minute and are both highly ranked these days.

So they haven't even made a decision about the mandatory since Jack lost and Chavez was already number one? What is the news exactly?

DeGale deserves a bit of luck, does make you wonder though had he stayed with Fwank I do believe he would of fought for the WBO belt by now against Abraham or Stieglitz.

Same could of possibly been said for Kell Brook who is a good fighter but has fought no1.

Ricky Burns could of potentially been a unified lightweight champion against Vazquez or Broner.

I got laughed out of another forum for suggesting the same thing. U could also argue that Bomber could've been in a better position with fw. hes hardly shone.

I will never have any sympathy for any professional setbacks that happens to DeGale.

He acted like an unbearable prick before the Groves fight, and I hope he never gets a title shot again.

Degale will be number 1 with the WBO now should go after that.

If Paul Smith fights for that belt before James has any world title fight it is an absolute disgrace.

Pretty sure both of them are moving up to light heavy and Oosthuizen actually got let go by his promoter not long ago for showing a lack of discipline! Cant see either of those fights happening for those reasons.

Could Degale vs Chavez jr ever happen? If he has time and a bit of $ perhaps Degale can get Vera or Manfredo jr over to the UK.

Why should DeGale be ranked above Chavez Jnr?
James has hardly been beating top ranked guys, and at least Chavez Jnr has fought at a higher level.
Look at the last 5 boxers faced by each, and who would you rank as beating the better boxers? Its got to be Chavez Jnr

DeGale has got to stop with these stupid marking time fights and move up a level.

Arum won't let Chavez anywhere near DeGale. Chunky has his faults but for me he'd box Chavez's head off. Vera's a jumped up middleweight and he he gave Chavez kittens first time around. Chavez might have deserved his win in the rematch but he still looked ponderous against a very average fighter, blowing hard in the latter rounds and never looking close to gaining a stoppage for me. Chavez is taylor made for DeGale and his team will realise that.

The WBC have been very accomodating in terms of the opponents they've provided for Jnr. Rubio was mucked about for long enough before they were all confident that Chavez was a ready for him and Rubio is, at best, a strong, solid light-middle.

Golden Boy might promote Bika but he earns them little money and they don't have a young 168lb fighter to use him as a stepping stone for. If Arum parts with a few quid he'll get Bika, Chavez will be given every advantage possible to nick a decision an DeGale will be lead around the houses like Kell Brook has been for the past two years or so.

DeGale beats Bika and Chavez but he might not get the chance. The WBO route might prove the way ahead as things stand.

Agree with your point re. DeGale's fights but Vera is a good standard club fighter, and Rubio and Lee have very padded records. Neither have beaten world class opposition in their last five fights
