Frank Bruno v Jumbo Cummings
Frank Bruno v Jumbo Cummings
When Bruno gets tagged. The reaction to the punch was like something from a cartoon.
Anyone remember it?
Anyone remember any other crazy side effects?
Berbick against Tyson...
Curry against McCallum...

Re: Frank Bruno v Jumbo Cummings
Ive never subscribed to the belief that Frank was chinny, he wasnt, if he had been then he would have been koed by Cummings that day. Franks main problem was that he didnt react well when hurt and tended to freeze, rather than hold or go down for a count. That and his stamina were his main weaknesses as a fighter, but as chins go I actually think Frank had a far better chin than he is given credit for imo.

Jump to 8:20 for the punch. I agree Bruno wasn't chinny, that punch from Cummings would have decked many a heavyweight, he could really bang. Bruno didn't know how to tie people up and would just stand there. The punches Tyson hit Bruno with in their first fight were huge and Bruno took them all without going down, unlike many other Tyson opponents.

He didn't go down against Lennox, either.Controversial wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp1odQQ6N7E

Hearns was similar. Leonard locked Duran in round 2 of their first fight when hurt. When Ray hurts Tommy…Tommy just held his hands up. In the rematch he managed to clinch.

Cummings arms were huge, right at the end in slo-mo it catches him walking back to his corner, massive geezer.

Re: Frank Bruno v Jumbo Cummings
yeah he could take a hellacious shot and not be put down or discouraged but he would freeze and forget to hold or go down. Oddly he learnt how to do both by the time he fought Tyson in 89 and the loss to Smith wouldnt have happened if he did this. Against Witherspoon he simply was beaten in a hard close fight. His stamina was physically v good he set a fast pace in all bar his last 2 fights his problem was mentally and physically he was so tense and had so much expectation on him it drained away at his stamina. But he always reacted to being hit with a haymaker by freezing on the spot against Lewis he was given every opportunity to go down or hold but he had that look of terror and doom on his face he always had when he was frozen!fatcity69 wrote:Ive never subscribed to the belief that Frank was chinny, he wasnt, if he had been then he would have been koed by Cummings that day. Re: Frank Bruno v Jumbo Cummings
I've never understood how nobody seemed to have the 'ability' to teach Frank how to react when hurt. Hearns was similar earlier in his career but he improved greatly in that department later on
Re: Frank Bruno v Jumbo Cummings
I dunno about that; he was brave, he would get up and keep fighting in unwinnable fights. He was plenty determined and strong-willed I think, but mentally fragile. He always wanted to win and forced himself to continue, but sometimes that was in the face of his body no longer obeying, and perhaps his mind telling him he couldn't. The way he gradually tied up in the Witherspoon fight, one he was winning and really should have gone on to take springs to mind.
Re: Frank Bruno v Jumbo Cummings
Yeah that was an amazing shot he took without going down. He was very lucky it came at the very end of the round - he was lucky the fight wasn't stopped the next round too - very good resilience from Frank to weather that storm.

It looked like a battle between two bodybuilders.
Two overly muscled robots going at each other. :P
I'd like to nominate Lennox Lewis -v- Tony Tucker - round 8 when Tucker stunned Lewis to the sole of his boots & he looked out on his feet for a split second.
Re: Frank Bruno v Jumbo Cummings
Cummings never fought again,as far as I know,he`s currently serving a life sentence for murder

I believe him. If that punch had landed just a little earlier Frank would have been out for the count. It was a huge shot. I don't know how he stayed standing.
Re: Frank Bruno v Jumbo Cummings
The sad part is is that he may have had a chance at taking Gerrie Coetzee. But if Mitch Green could near shutout Jumbo, then Gerrie could possibly do the same.Il Duce wrote:How Just A Few Seconds Can Make A Difference In A Fight
