Liston by ud or late ko. Johnson wouldnt be able to tie him up and manipulate him around the ring the way he did most of his opponents.

Will with TheOne you can usually take a calendar out and predict his prediction. Actually we both are of the mind that typically speaking the more modern the fighter the better his chances.

HOWEVER I'm not on board in this case. I would take Jack Johnson with some caveats. In my theoretical Jack has been brought into the 60's has his full knowledge and abilities along with being able to see, study and get the feel for who he is about to fight.

In other words all things being equal Johnson is the tougher, more durable and smarter fighter. I give him the nod and I think it's possible he takes him out, because Johnson CAN NOT be intimidated and would take the heart out of Sonny sometime during the fight. I even think Jack could get up off his back to do it if he had to...and he might have to.

Hey....theone....BB put up a great Johnson film on another thread check it out. If nothing else just to add to your collection.

Johnson leads early, but Liston eventually catches up to him and knocks him out.

Yeah i say it, pretty cool. I have several boxing compilation tapes that had all of that footage and many others. A few of the tapes were made by HBO and were hosted by Barry Tompkins and Mike Tyson. Having watched those tapes only solidifies my belief that prime Liston would be too much for Johnson.

Fighters like Liston, Holmes, and Louis are the type of fighters who would give Johnson the most trouble with their stand-up boxer-puncher style. But with that said, Johnson by close, clear-cut decision, probably 9-6. Liston could be made to miss, and Johnson had speed, great reflexes, and a solid chin. Liston was not the most mind-set fighter, as he was weak mentally, and Johnson was more of a pest in the ring than Ali. Johnson doesn't have the power to trade with Liston, but would outbox Liston and take him out of his fight plan and win a solid, pretty much technical points victory where neither fighter lands many shots and neither is ever in danger of being stopped.

Hard fight for me though, as Liston is my favorite all-time, followed by Johnson. I'd like to see Liston take it, but I don't see that happening.

He picks whomever BoxBuzz picks. (Forgive the third person reference here, these are his words not mine.) He has made this known in the past.

I've forgotten more about boxing that Il Duce knows.

Yeah...that could mean my memory is spot on.

Also that I've always known very little, is spite of the fact that I have retained it all.

It's full of optional meanings I suppose. lol

Il Duce is just a shuffled pack of cards. Everything is there he just mixes up how it comes out.

Lol Ezzard :-)

I'm taking Johnson to win this one. Sonny just not as clever or anywhere near as mentally tough. Johnson by decision

Johnson is one of the very few heavyweights I'd favor vs a peak Liston. Liston was a beast but I think Johnson is just as strong, and his counter-punching and defense would cause Sonny to get more and more frustrated, which would end up leading him to make more and more mistakes, and get hit more and more. Johnson by decision with Sonny's face battered and bloody by the end.

Shame Seamus ducked out of this one... Be nice to know who he'd go with if he had to.

My guess is he'd go with Johnson.

Why?

Seamus's critique of Johnson is around who he didn't fight...not what he was in the ring. Of course, he might not be too keen on him there either but he is pretty much clear that he thinks Liston was found wanting in the squared circle.

Sorry didn't notice. I'd take Liston via a KO inside of 10. Liston's pretty good, though never great jab would keep Johnson on the defensive and off balance, and anything Jack can land, Sonny can take. Eventually Liston catched him, and drops him 3 times to end it.
