I personally am very high on Gene Fullmer and think he is now extremely underrated.
He fought some great fights and was just superb.

Also he's fun to watch! A real old time tough guy!

I'd say I'm a monster Fullmer fan.

Gene Fullmer was a very tough and durable customer. Maybe the last tough white guy we have seen. After his retirement in '63, I have not seen a tougher white fighter. Not a top 100 all time great in my view, but pretty close to it.

I don't have to see any more fights....Of the last 50 years, I have not seen a tougher white fighter than Gene Fullmer...Fullmer was the last of the great tough white fighters.

I understand if you think he's the toughest white fighter in the last 50 years, but to say we haven't seen a tough white fighter since him is beyond stupid.

I have never said that I have not seen a tough white fighter since Gene Fullmer. I am saying since Fullmer, you are not going to see anything like it. So far, I have not seen a tougher white fighter. Not in my lifetime.

And there has been some tough ones in my lifetime:
Ken Buchanan
Jerry Quarry
Arturo Gatti
Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini

None of them were tougher. None of them were better than the Mormon from Utah.

I would say though that Gene can make a claim to being a top 10 MW. Not saying he is one, but he's got enough credentials in my book to make the claim and that is saying a heckuva lot.

fullmer was certainly one of the tuffest muthas ever to get in the ring - I like him and he had ability too. not top shelf ability but he used his assets to the max.

and yes he's great to watch

When he fought the great Carmen Basilio twice it was one of those fights that featured two of the toughest men that ever faced in the ring. He was stronger than Basilio, though. Both those were two great contests.

Gene Fullmer: Great pressure fighter, with a ton of heart and and a sturdy chin. Tough as hell. Not all that big of a puncher really, but his relentlessness made up for that.

Overall I never give much thought to where he ranks in the all time rankings, but he's probably underrated by most Boxing fans.

To me, he is a borderline top 100 great. I mean, it is very difficult to rank all the fighters p4p. It really is. Some of my favorites, I had to leave them out.

Agreed. People don't realize when you actually make a list like that how hard it is to be top 100. I have a friend who every time a movie comes on says "that's one of the top 10 movies of all time" he's probably said it now about 75 movies I know of alone :)
Same way with fighters everyone seems top 10 but of course they can't all be.

If you actually make a top 100 p4p list you will find there are tons of super fighters you can't get on there, so being top 100 is very elite in my book.
