Channel 5 tournament

Post by WelshJack »

It hasn't been explained properly. Are all the fights on live tv? What does the winner get?

So its a Prizefighter tournament spread over 6 months instead of one night. Fair enough, hope it succeeds. Channel 5 have lost the continuity of having Fury and Eubank jnr, so this is a decent attempt at providing a different kind of continuity for their viewers. I wonder if the participants are contractually blocked from having any other fights in the meantime ?

I would think they are and I hope there's reserves available to step in, some of the fighters in the tournament don't exactly fight very often, but it's keeping boxing on Terrestrial TV and it's fantastic exposure for the 8 lads in the tournament. Great for Mick Hennessey too, he put on 4 shows last year, one of which was Fury-Cunningham, a co-promotion in the US, he's now putting on 3 live shows this month, despite 2 of his biggest draws moving channels.

who do you reckons gonna win?

I think Ajisafe will win it, Clarkson and Mcintosh have a chance though. Francis is too old now hes 40. Dickinson lost a wide decision to Ajisafe already and the others aren't good enough.

Great idea. They should try and do this with the British Heavy title too.

I'll give it a watch probably.

Good to see Channel 5 pushing people that aren't Fury or DeGale. (People that aren't total bell-ends basically.)

I e-mailled Channel 5 a while back asking for Lenny Daws to get more TV time. They said they'd consider it, but he never gets on.

Should do this with every weight but some fighters want an easy run toba title rather than earn it

Isn't the Galahad fight actually the main event?

it is but with CH5 concentrating on the tournament part of it surely they'll show both thos fights and they usually only have a 2hr broadcast

They'll show the Galahad fight live - I'd be shocked if that loses out to Clarkson-Duncan no matter if it is in a tourney.

Galahad live, possibly Dickinson-McIntosh too, highlights of the other I'd suspect.

just checked the planner for next week its on longer looks like they definitely showing Galahad live. (9pm-Midnight)

In fact they list it as seperate shows something like: Maxinutrition tournament 9pm-10.45pm, Galahad 10.45pm-Midnight

Really looking forward to this. Hats off to Hennessy. Much better format than Super Six and Prizefighter.

no expense spared on the trophy

nothing gets you up for a fight like a guy talking about his fashion line.

Think Ajisafe will bet Francis. Dean is too old and a lot slower these days, a far cry from the exciting prospect ripping it up in the mod-nineties. Ajisafe has good skills, I pick him to win the whole thing.
