Bellew at Cruiser

Post by 80/20 »

Just seen a Boxing news photo of Bomber which in fairness is not a great shot however his physique looks soft, I am a fan of Tonys I like his heart and honest approach and he has a decent skills set but this is a strange move for me .

I am aware that as an am he was heavy

He was a very good fighter at light heavy, he was murder at heavy as an amateur. His early performances and his vocal manner got him a lot of attention and a couple of shots as a ranked light heavy; cruiser is a nasty division with some nasty hitters; lets see.

Bellew has got one of them "skinny fat" physiques with very little muscle tone - his opponent looks the same.

He is like Frankie Gavin. When they both trained in the same gym I thought that Arnie was force feeding them both steak puddings !

I know that it is not a reflection of them as boxers, although I am surprised that for the amount of training that they do and the diets they follow that their physiques are so poor.

Some of the cruisers are coming down from heavy and are very strong; he'll do fine at a certain level but Stevenson pushed him about a bit and bashed him; I hope he does well as he seems a decent lad but if that Afolabi hits him flush he'll pack the game in.

Bellew is pretty decent noting more nothing less at boh cruiser and light heavy. It's his aggressiveness that both sells tickets and always give him an outside chance against more talented fighters. He makes it worth tuning in, and fair play to him.

I think he was boxing to a plan though he did look cowed by Stevensons' power - if he'd just thought 'fornicate it' and rolled the dice he may have banged him one - all that training for what?

Yeah, I bumped into a fellow in town today and he was on about Bellew - he said he was fed up because he promised all sorts and then went out of his way to do the opposite; it's frustrating because he has a good punch and can go for it.

I've not seen the other man box mate; I'd not have thought so but the extra half stone of weight, if it's muscle, can mean a big difference in punch power. I don't think Bellew had said he found making light heavy a real struggle before so we'll see - I can't see him beating Huck or Afolabi though.

Bomber has said he was absolutely killing himself to make 12 stone 7lbs and he feels happier now fighting at Cruiser. With the extra 15-20lbs or so he will look a better fighter for it.

I agree. He's one of those fighters the old 13.8 limit would have been perfect for.

Not been Bellew's biggest fan but can't argue that he looked much better with more weight on him the other night, much more solid and his shots looked much heavier.

Think he's getting some unfair stick for his physique too, he's just got one of those fleshy body types which holds body fat and doesn't muscle up well. I know because i'm exactly the same - trained pretty much every day when i boxed, harder than everyone else because i wanted a 6 pack etc, never got one despite being the fittest in the gym.

He's like a scaled up fleshy Mexican, Erik Morales type, problem being that i think the lack of strength and explosiveness might be harder to pull off at the higher weight where he'll be boxing guys much more athletic than him

He looked how he used to in the ams with snap & power!!! Unfortunately he's too big for 12-7 & too small for 14-4 which are virtually heavyweights!!
