Froch v Groves - I Know I'm Being Silly But....

Post by Taansend »

How is Froch Groves rematch only worthy of a 4 star rating by Boxrec whereas Solis v Thompson, Allakhverdiev v Vargas and Stevenson v Fonfara are considered 5 stars?

Braehmer against Maccarinelli is four stars :oo (I'm actually looking forward to this one though. One last hurrah for Enzo!).

Is it because they look ONLY at the result of the last fight and not at the circumstances?

If that is the case why is Lara v Smith 5 stars? Smith lost his last bout & 3 of his last 7 - or 5 of his last 12 (not slagging off Ishe who I have great admiration for).

Solis v Thompson also features a fighter coming off a loss against a fighter who was stopped in one in his only world level bout.

I know there's probably a numerical reasoning behind it all but it just strikes me as a little bizarre.

Human reasoning is not involved thus it prevents any bias but is susceptible to a few odd results. Therefore there are pros and cons to this system. The ratings are calculated via a formula.

The ratings (including the star ratings) are explained in the link below:

So looking at the criteria Froch Groves is 4 star because Groves has 327 points & he needs 331.

Whereas Thompson and Solis are 368 & 358 respectively.

So close & yet so far.

Froch v Groves 2 is the biggest UK fight of the year and one of the biggest in the World; it may not fit the criteria for a 5 star bout but is a really massive bout between 2 real competitors. I'd give it 5 stars.

100%. I may be wrong but I doubt there will be another fight that comes close to the 60-80,000 mark this year. Definitely other big fights but none that capture the imagination of boxing fans and the general public like this one does in the UK.
