At 6'4", 175 lbs, and being 17 years old, Gerry Cooney probably looked like a fawn struggling to stand on his hind legs. Still, a 55-3 record with several amateur titles isn't bad.

True, but imagined if he had to fight in the '76 Olympic Trials.Would have been amazing.drunkenpiper36 wrote:At 6'4", 175 lbs, and being 17 years old, Gerry Cooney probably looked like a fawn struggling to stand on his hind legs. Still, a 55-3 record with several amateur titles isn't bad.

I don't think he would have done too badly. He was starting to fill out by that point. And his early round activity and work rate might have gotten the judges' attention.Nile4000 wrote:True, but imagined if he had to fight in the '76 Olympic Trials.Would have been amazing.drunkenpiper36 wrote:At 6'4", 175 lbs, and being 17 years old, Gerry Cooney probably looked like a fawn struggling to stand on his hind legs. Probably would've done good. They should've matched him up with Jimmy Clark, Marvin Stinson, or even Big John Tate, to see what would've happened.drunkenpiper36 wrote:I don't think he would have done too badly. He might have medaled. Don't think I'd pick him to win the gold, but who knows. Man had an awesome amateur career. Record was like 55-3 and won the NY Golden Gloves.

If he could've hit Teofilo Stevenson with that left hook, who knows. The history of boxing might have changed more than we know.

That should have been the head-line.

Uh, SugahRay, when DrunkenPiper said "This" to your post, I don't think he was correcting your grammar, I think he was saying "This" as a way of underlying that he agreed with your statement.

what was Gerry Cooney's amateur record going into this fight,
and how was he able to knock him out exactly ?
( perhaps Gerry Cooney had talked about it just before this fight)

According to an article from NY Daily News (March 6, 1974)... Davis beat him to the punch with his right every time and floored him twice before the ref stopped it.
Time of stoppage was 2:44 of the first round.

Cooney isn't just any gold glove champion, he was NY's golden glove champion at heavyweight.drunkenpiper36 wrote: ↑12 Feb 2014, 14:33 At 6'4", 175 lbs, and being 17 years old, Gerry Cooney probably looked like a fawn struggling to stand on his hind legs. I never saw him at 17 years old, but his father was one scary looking dude. You could tell where he got his size from,

Eddie Davis-born 4. October.1951
Gerry Cooney-born 24. August 1956
So if my math is correct
Davis is 5 years,2 months and 20 days older then Cooney
Davis and Cooney would have been either 22 and 17 years old in the Spring of 1974.
and 23 and 18 years old in the Fall of 1974.
