P4P lists always annoy people so...

Post by Ezzard »

I thought I'd do another one...

I think my tier one (and pretty much everyone else's) has to be...

(no order, no heavyweights)
Langford
Greb
Armstrong
Charles
Robinson

Some people don't include Charles but I think he should be there.

Tier 2 is trickier...

The first name I always think of is Archie Moore but it could just as easily be Joe Gans or Benny Leonard.

My tier 2 (again no order)

Archie Moore
Joe Gans
Benny Leonard
Jack Britton
Willie Pep
Sandy Saddler
Roberto Duran
Gene Tunney
Mickey Walker

Tiers is absolutely the way to go and I'm in 100% agreement with your tier one. Off of the top of my head some additions to tier two for me would be...

Canzoneri without a doubt.
McClarnin
Griffith
Gavilan
Ross
Ali
Louis

And Britton wouldn't be any higher than tier four or five for me.

Emile Griffith
Kid Gavilan
Ray Leonard
Kid Lewis
Carlos Monzon
Ike Williams
Charley Burley

Ezzard. Do you have a personal p4p list? I would like to see it.

Britton has about 10 wins over Kid Lewis and wins over Benny Leonard Mickey Walker, O'Dowd and a whole raft of contender types... I have to put him in.

Holman had a terrific career and most of us simply forget about him. Whittaker's career doesn't really stack up at this level, as brilliant as he was.

This is about as close as I'll ever get Elmer but even this I would change from day to day...

Leonard dominated Britton from all reports I've read. Great fighter, just not that high for me.

Whatever tier Burley is in, Holman has to be with him imo. I think Whitaker compares favorably to Willie Pep.

I like the idea of a tier and enjoy your choices Ezzard.

Was wondering which one of Langford's contemporaries would slip into these type of lists.... Gans is probobly the obvious one, astonishing scalp for a young Langford.... but who from there??.... his partners in crime Jeanette, McVea,Wills, ect were all HWs....

George Dixon and Jack Blackburn would be up there for sure... Terry McGovern and Ketchel too.
