Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
This argument is becoming silly, if Curtis Woodhouse has decided to go for the lonsdale belt outright, would he go back for a rematch, that would be so risky ? It don't make business sense, plus their are other contenders waiting for their chance, then their could be a euro title shot come up, or International title shot, so many options, unfortunately when you lose your title you have to go back in line again.

Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
I gave my answer. As boxing fans we need to take a step back and see who deserves a rematch, not just stroke off our mates.DMA1987 wrote:I asked whether you would have actively pushed for it. If not then are you not guilty of the same hypocrisy you accuse others of?
If I am a hypocrite for apparently only wanting to see re matches of people I like, I don't see the difference.
The champion who gives a voluntary defence, but arguably gets the shaft so a 'good vibe' story can win the title deserves a rematch on general principle. Even if it is two fights down the line...he deserves not to be forgotten
If we just call for rematches for guys we like then we are guilty of total double standards.
Not every champ who loses a title deserves a rematch, that is obvious. But when the circumstances are dubious then he deserves another crack.

Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
Here's the truth of the matter, darren is a nightmare to box, very awkward and has a style that is hard to beat, I managed to get the job done in a close fight that could have gone either way, out of the options I have darren would be the trickiest fight for the least amount of money, of course he deserves a rematch after losing his title on a split but I must weigh up what's best for me, I'm not here to be kind and do what's best for boxing I'm here to provide and do what's best for my wife and children, boxing is a sport I love but it's also a business, it's not a very romantic way to look at things but it's the truth, it's easy from the outside saying I should do this or that, don't forget before I turned pro I was a fan like you guys so I understand fans want to see what is fair and just all the time, but when this is your living and the tool you use to provide a life for your family then you look at it a different way, if Hamiltons people came up with the best offer the rematch would be on, they haven't so ill sort out the best offer and take it

I totally understand that Curtis as I can wear different hats, and I respect your honesty.curtis wood wrote:Here's the truth of the matter, darren is a nightmare to box, very awkward and has a style that is hard to beat, I managed to get the job done in a close fight that could have gone either way, out of the options I have darren would be the trickiest fight for the least amount of money, of course he deserves a rematch after losing his title on a split but I must weigh up what's best for me, I'm not here to be kind and do what's best for boxing I'm here to provide and do what's best for my wife and children, boxing is a sport I love but it's also a business, it's not a very romantic way to look at things but it's the truth, it's easy from the outside saying I should do this or that, don't forget before I turned pro I was a fan like you guys so I understand fans want to see what is fair and just all the time, but when this is your living and the tool you use to provide a life for your family then you look at it a different way, if Hamiltons people came up with the best offer the rematch would be on, they haven't so ill sort out the best offer and take it
One question...if it is all about getting money for the family, why did you give up the football career where you would be earning a truckload more? We all know boxing isn't a sport here you make good cash, unless you are really, really good!

It was never about money but after toiling away for 8 years earning very little surely you wouldn't begrudge me trying to earn a bit while I'm champ? I'm 34 and had a lot of hard fights, who knows how long I've got left, I want to be involved in top fights with the top kids and earn as much as I can a long the way
Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
What an honest guy you are Curtis. Brilliant to see, hopefully match room stump up the cash you deserve.

Of course I wouldn't mate. I never begrudged Jimmy Vincent taking the cash to avoid Barnes in a rematch and fighting Magee (Whilst everyone else was slaughtering Frank and saying Vincent was messing up the sport)...you have one career and a family to feed.curtis wood wrote:It was never about money but after toiling away for 8 years earning very little surely you wouldn't begrudge me trying to earn a bit while I'm champ? My issue was Hamilton was an unfashionable champ, and because of this no-one really seems to care he has lost his title in one that could have gone either way. The Cinderella champ will go to the back of the line whilst people bask in your reflective glow. He will be simply forgotten
I think I just want him to get something out of this, even if it is an international belt or something. I do maintain your fan boys here who are saying 'screw rematches, its a business' would be whining that your 'dreams had been crushed' and doing a Tahrir Square style sit in until you were given your rematch if you lose your title in a disputed one.
You on the other hand have been nothing but honest.
And I am genuinely delighted for what you have acheived!
Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
Jesus. You are doing the exact same with Hamilton. Its just because you like/feel sorry for him. There is nothing wrong with it, nothing at all, but it's rich when paired with everything else you've said.thepocketrocket wrote:

Do what you want to do Curtis, you don't owe anybody anything in my opinion. To be in a position to select your opponents shows how much you've achieved.

No my friend...I am taking a back seat and working out who deserves a rematch, instead of acting like some giddy fanboy, who is just happy that my beloved Curtis is now a champion. The facts speak for themselves.DMA1987 wrote:Jesus. You are doing the exact same with Hamilton. Its just because you like/feel sorry for him. The fan in me hates seeing injustice. That is why, when everyone was giggling up their sleeves that the GB boxers were getting gift after gift at London 2012, I spent a lot of time having sympathy for the other poor cnuts who were having their lifes dreams savaged.
As fans, we seem to be moving in the direction of not caring about the integrity of the sport, as long as 'our boy' is doing well. As a Businessman that makes sense, but so does having seven layers of titles at world level.
Doesn't make it sit comfortable with me
Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
Hamilton not getting a rematch isn't an injustice. All he had to do was beat Woodhouse, something I'm sure he was pretty confident would convincingly happen. Why should Woodhouse then be tied into giving a rematch to the lad he beat? It wasn't a robbery, just a good, close fight. If we were talking Beltran v Burns levels then I am right there with you, a case like that screams for a rematch.thepocketrocket wrote:No my friend...I am taking a back seat and working out who deserves a rematch, instead of acting like some giddy fanboy, who is just happy that my beloved Curtis is now a champion. The seeing blatant robberies is horrible, or hometown decisions in general. Some of the Olympics stuff was horrendous, I don't think you'll find many boxing fans who disagree, I certainly don't. But it's a stretch to throw that into this arena.
Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
I'm with the rocket on this; I accept that I don't know much about anything and I enjoy seeing boxers and insiders post here; I imagine that if Hamilton had been a regular and enthusiastic poster here then there would be more support for his cause; that may be good, bad or indifferent. I'd like to see Curtis do well and earn big purses, it'd be nice - it'd be nice to see boxing be a bit more than the bottom line as well - Hamilton lost a close decision, he should be highly rated still - I hope he gets his chance again.

Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
Are there much easier fights out there at this level? I appreciate there are more lucrative ones. Did Matchroom have options on you or are you a free agent?curtis wood wrote:Exactly, why do it again? Hard fight, let's see who he fights next, they won't be queuing up for him

Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
Hamiltons team were that confident of victory they had no rematch clause, in a voluntary defence of a British title it's pretty unheard of, matchroom have no options on me so I'm free to fight who ever I want really, the thing is this darren brings no money to the table, he sells no tickets so generates no money for the shows, the main reason I got the fight to start with is because it was in hull and I could bring some cash with ticket sales to the table, this is just the business side of the game, I can either have a tough fight for average money or a tough fight for very good money, there my options, what would any sane person choose? Darren will be on the outside looking in until he gets hold of a title that people want, without that he's top of the who needs him club, fair? Not a chance but that's how it is, tried to explain the business side of things a little bit fellas, hope you can understand my position, it's not the honourable thing to do but it is what it is, I'm going to do what's right for my wife and 3 kids
Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
How is a rematch with Hamilton one of the easier title fights at light welterweight? Hamilton was a solid British champion on good form.Coco wrote:A rematch with Hamilton is one of the easier title fights at the weight, so take that unless there is a money fight waiting for you.
There are much easier title defences Woodhouse can make.
Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
Thepocketrocket is being pretty daft in this thread.
I scored the Woodhouse vs Hamilton fight to Woodhouse and he has no reason to give Hamilton an immediate rematch.
Woodhouse vs Coyle would be a good fight and more people want to watch it than a Hamilton rematch.

Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
Of course if Curtis wants the Lonsdale belt outright then he MIGHT have to fight Hamilton again... maybe the BBBoC will install Hamilton as a mandatory.
I still want to see the Limond fight, if only it will mean it will make the Commonwealth belt become active again. I personally think it is a tadge easier for Curtis than Coyle and it there is more benefits. What does Coyle bring ranking wise to the table?
Why not think big.... why not think the likes of (if he beats Limond that is)
Khabib Allakhverdiev
Johan Perez
These are not big names in their own country, the would travel especially if Hearn and Coldwell work together on it.
If its alright for Brian Rose to get a mandatory for a world title shot, why can't the British and Commonwealth champion become a voluntary.

Re: Curtis Woodhouse - Unretires
You need to be more diplomatic Curtis!! You don't need Hamilton there are better fights for the fans out there, your styles don't gel & the fight don't sell let's not forget who had there arm raised at the bell! Say no more!curtis wood wrote:Exactly, why do it again? Hard fight, let's see who he fights next, they won't be queuing up for him
I'm securing money for my family & there are easier fights, don't get fans buying in to future fights. Never explain buisness again or I'll send Hamilton round!

Just waiting to see the Curtis lickers saying he deserves a rematch if he gets a dodgy decision against him next time out!.
But hopefully Dave will be sensible enough to put a rematch claise in!
