Wanted to buy his book but it's only in French, was a big fan of his back in the day, would just like to hear other boxing posters thoughts on this fighter and any interesting facts about him, as from the little information I have read he seems to have had a very strange and interesting boxing career. Not only European title he picked up the ibo title, he is the oldest fighter in history to win a world title at 41 for the first time

Yes his ring attire was absolute dreadful

IBO title isn't any sort of world title, and worth considerably less than a Euro belt. I thought it would be insulting to mention it as an achievement.

Colin Dunne beat some top fighters & was never respected as much as he deserved I feel

It was won and defended against British title level guys who never made it any higher. Djelti vacated it to fight for the Euro title.

Yes but the ibo belt is noinsult that's my point, it's a much better title than the Wbu, Wbf or iba

*shrug* all the same as far as I'm concerned. Phony world titles with no evidence of a serious ranking process, which are seldom held by anyone who's even near the top of the division.

I agree, It just shows the level that Colin Dunne was, I also feel that he wasn't given the credit and respect he deserved.

I read that Djelti used his EBU title as leverage to get a job as a PE teacher following his retirement from pro boxing.

Think he'd have being too big for Brodie. Brodie was always best at Super bantam. I think Gomez Djelti would have being a mega potential banana skin for mike. I think he'd have had to come through absolute hell to beat him. I think the safer bet would be Djelti though of course with Gomez you never know.

Mitchell might have being smart enough to out box him ... In fact I think that's the most likely outcome.

Jeff I always use to call for Gomez vs afiff djelti what a great clash if Sykes that would if been, for me along with Nigel benn, Carl Thompson and Jamie Moore, Gomez is one if the most exciting British fighters of last 25 years

Gomez had great potential! Even Stevie wonder could see that.

Djelti was a very fit boxer, strong and lean with a decent punch. He learnt on the job, as going pro with no amateur experience and aged 31 would do that. Sink or swim and for the first few fights he sunk. After being DQ'd in his first few fights he could of walked away, but stuck with it, and gradually got better, being matched with journeymen who he beat, and better boxers who he lost to, such as Lorcy and Lifa.

He kept plugging away and put in decent showings against Barrios, Jones and Dunne. Losing those on points but showing a toughness to keep going.

This was why he was brought over to fight Charles Shepherd, most thought that Djelti would put up a tough display but ultimatly lose against the hometown boxer Shepherd, who was on a roll having beaten a fading Tom Johnson in his previous fight. But Djelti didn't read the script and after a rough couple of rounds, including taking a count in the first he slowly took over taking Shepherd out in the 6th round.

Next up from this country was Ian Mcleod, who put in a brave performance in lasting the distance, but he was well beat by the left hand of Djelti, the jab making a mess of the Scotmans face.

Alex Moon gave it a try, but he was floored twice before being counted out in the 6th, the left hook again doing the damage.

After that Djelti moved on to win the EBU title, but for me he never quite looked the same when wearing that belt, winning it away from home in Spain is a very good result, but his subsequent defences against Oudji and Djibaba were a bit lack lustre. Age seemed to be catching up with him.
