Nathan Cleverly
Nathan Cleverly
With matchroom about to announce a show for May 17th in Cardiff do you think now he will sign as things have gone quiet with FW
Re: Nathan Cleverly
No, don't see the point. Warren will give him more focus than Eddie

Re: Nathan Cleverly
This will be a very bitter pill for Fwank to swallow if true.
At the very height of the "cold war" I recall Fwank moaning about loyalty (I think it was after Ricky's defection) and holding up Nathan as a shining example of loyalty. Fwank was almost choking with emotion as he said the loyalty was appreciated and would be paid back many times over.
It was all for nothing if Nathan is going to make the switch.

Would be a real kick in the teeth for Fwank. He has invested a lot of money into Nathan

Can we read anything into him popping up on sky sports' ringside program to say "I'm back" instead of on the "other channel" ?

Re: Nathan Cleverly
Depends on how you look at it I guess. He held the 4th rated version of the world title, faced soft opposition, crumbled when in against a genuine 175lb fighter of world class standard, and most of it happened on a fantastic yet obscure subscription channel, so the public at large never heard of him. Bernard Hopkins and Adonis Stephenson set the agenda at world title level, Nathan name-dropped them but did not have the promotional backing to make the big fights happen.ThereByTheGrace wrote:Has his career as a top level boxer ever started?jessi wrote:No it's notearsjohn wrote:Don't see the point. After several title defences, he took on Kovalev in order to build momentum and get some serious money, and get himself on the map at genuine world title level. That says it all really. If he craves the proper opportunities, he should move to Matchroom. They are not perfect, but you cannot fault the world title opportunities Eddie is lining up for British fighters - big fights for proper world titles on the world stage. Okay, most of Eddie's fighters are getting hammered in these fights (!) but if its opportunities you want, Matchroom provides.
What has Nathan got to look forward to if he stays where he is ? At best, winning a splinter of the world championship and defending it on a channel the public don't watch. He's been through all that, maybe its time for him to see if the grass is greener.

I slightly disagree with that mate. In all fairness Cleverly has already been a world champion unlike most of the matchroom guys so I think FW delivered more so in that instance because he actually won the belt and didnt have to face the best in the division to do it.

He won a razor thin decision and was losing the fight till bellew ran out of steam towards the back end of the fight. Bellew landed by far the bigger shots but cleverly had the more work rate! Smash him up again haha shows how much u know about boxing haha.
Bellew had very little experience at the time whereas cleverly had already fought foreign opposition and had gone the distance on a few occasions,
Let's see how they get on this time now bellew has similar experience and doesn't have to struggle to make weight.
1 thing is for sure since the fight bellew has gone forward with his career and fought some good foreign opposition. Cleverly on the other hand with the exception of kovelov has fought no one and has barley been fighting.
Hopefully cleverly will have some good news this week and the fight will be just round the corner then we will see who smashes who
Re: Nathan Cleverly
Looking at his face at the end of the Kovalev fight, I can't see him getting back in a ring to any worthwhile effect. He was more than physically destroyed that night; rebuilding confidence after that is a task even the Romans wouldn't take on.jessi wrote:No it's notearsjohn wrote:Don't see the point. Re: Nathan Cleverly
He wants to fight the best but FW wouldn't let him until he requested Kovalev. He might not be a top level fighter, but surely he is beyond British and Euro level at light heavy we'll see how he does at Cruiser.
Re: Nathan Cleverly
Its still very early and negative to say it's over, if his hungry enough and settles in to cruiserweight ok, I think he has a lot to offer on the world stageearsjohn wrote:Looking at his face at the end of the Kovalev fight, I can't see him getting back in a ring to any worthwhile effect. Tony isn't as good as he thinks an will never be champ, top cruisers will destroy him,he's a salesman still trying get himself a big fight with someone who's already beat him in his backyard.righthook wrote:Smash him up againBandit wrote:Please join! It's excuse after excuse weight, experience he LOST man! Get over it.
Let's hope it's in Liverpool AGAIN so bellend can get smashed up AGAIN at home!
Re: Nathan Cleverly
I like both to be honest, don't understand the hate for Bellew, at least he's not boring, and I've heard that his work ethic in the gym is unrivaled. And it's not excuse after excuse at all, he fully admitted he was beat by the better man in Stevenson, hard to admit that Vs Cleverly because the fight was so close. I personally think Tony copes with the big jump in weight better as he has more power. Cleverly is skilled but I'm not sure he'll have the power to keep CW's at bay.Bandit wrote:Please give it a rest experience is a new one now... Re: Nathan Cleverly
Cleverly has turned down more than a few fights now seems to be running down his deal. and with Hearn saying he wants to make these all British showdowns it wouldn't suprise me if Cleverly signs with Matchroom so he can fight Bellew in a big fight in Wales.

I think the point I was trying to make is the difference between being a world champ on B ox N ation and being one on Sky. He's done the former, and (purely guessing) maybe it wasn't exactly all it could have been. It's pure guesswork, for all we know he may be perfectly happy.
I'm a subscriber and a supporter of Fwank's channel and I want it to prosper, but realistically it is and will remain a niche subscription channel and you'll never get a domestic fight of the magnitude of Froch / Groves on there. Fwank is doing great to snap up the UK rights to Mayweather and Pacquiao fights, but if you're a top British fighter and you're on BN, is it that good a deal ? Its great if you're on the way up like Bradley Skeete or Mitchell Smith but Ricky Burns, George Groves, Kevin Mitchell, Tony Bellew, Lee Selby and James DeGale have made the switch, and Campbell and Joshua have started their careers there. There's so much boxing around that Fwank can create a good channel for fans by picking up other shows in addition to his own promotions, but from a domestic point of view much of the cream of the crop is on Sky.
Anyway the point I was getting at with Nathan is that if he wants to jump ship too, it would indicate that fighters above British and Commonwealth level think the grass is greener over on Sky.
I recall what Bert Cooper muttered after his insanely heroic challenge to Evander Holyfield on HBO - Bert's greatest performance, even in defeat. "No more ESPN, no more ESPN...". The irony was, after losing his next fight, he did actually end up back on ESPN
I'm not saying Sky is HBO and BN is ESPN but all the defections point to something.

Re: Nathan Cleverly
Unnecssarily negative view of cleverly on here. Kovalev is an absolute force of nature who is generally putting guys to sleep / leaving them twitching on the floor. Cleverly hung in there for four rounds and will still conscious at the end. If nothing else he proved he's got a world class chin.
As for cruiserweight I'm not sure. Don't think ge strong enough to trouble the top guys but probably good enough to beat bellew again.

Wouldn't somebody with a world class chin have managed to not get knocked out ?Junker wrote:Unnecssarily negative view of cleverly on here. Re: Nathan Cleverly
He didnt get knocked out. He was stopped on his feet after several knockdowns. Considering what kovalev does to everyone else that demonstrstes pretty exceptional punch resistance IMO.
