Apathy is hurting boxing and inactivity may do the same to heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, former heavyweight king Jack Sharkey says. Sharkey blames the easy life of the times for the decline of the ring sport he loves.

"It's easy to point out why boxing and the interest in it is fading," Sharkey said. "All the kids look for today is the easiest way out. When I was a kid it was nothing for me to walk two or three miles for a loaf of bread. We were in shape in those days, we had to be.

"You can count on one hand today the number of real contenders in each division throughout the country. As a matter of fact, I bet you can't name three in each division that are strong contenders. At least I can't."

Sadly very dubious.....these words may well have run in the Miami newspaper that day...but there is no attribution. Your words run in this forum everyday.....and at least in your case we know who said them.

These were the days of "fill the page" and sometimes.....no, OFTEN time....when the "risk" would be minimal in terms of assessing if someone would "bark" or "cost" the publisher money....they would just fill up the space. This is not something that would likely be contested....so little risk to run with it, put it to type and spread it about.

Not sayin' that's what happened here. But.....no attribution. That's critical if you are at all discerning in your wish to "know" the facts.
