unlicensed group plan legal action against brit board
Re: unlicensed group plan legal action against brit board
I'd be happy to see the Board of Control challenged by a body with better organisation, resources and a way of managing professional boxing that is more ordered, fan and fighter friendly and efficient.
But those people currently doing the challenging seem to any lack credibility and are issuing a torrent of adjective-laden press releases that are borderline bizarre...Bendall portrayed as the second coming of Hagler is pure hubris and utterly discredits the enterprise before it even begins. I mean, pleez, that's shows you are not able to even issue a credible press release. It is kitchen-table, blogger-level propaganda.
And starting your life with a restraint of trade legal action - frankly, a poorly disguised PR stunt - is not the way to begin a brave new world for boxing.
Their argument would carry more gravitas if they looked at the sport's structures and offered some kind of joined-up, long-term programme/manifesto that improved safety, the welfare of fighters who boxed on their shows and a rethink of core debating points like rankings, purse bids etc.
The Board has many faults but it still delivers experience, a proven-resource base and a clear set of rules and way of operating. Robert Smith and those who came before him have always failed to bite one particular bullet....which is to pursue the case for legal legitimacy with the correct government department/s. That unwillingness to secure an official status has always surprised me beacuse it would be good for the Board and for its members; a 10-year licence to manage professional boxing based on competency and with regular reviews would be a good way forwards.

With all due respect that is horseshít!dalcumly wrote:The biggest issue in all this is the fact that they will drain the finances of the Board because they'll have to pay lawyers to defend this action. The Board's finances are already leaking like a seive because of previous legal actions.
If I was one of the Boards stewards I'd feel like giving up. You try your best to regulate boxing in this country and every honest decision you make now is being challenged in the law courts.
We're heading down to the road to anarchy, which means that anybody who wants to promote professional boxing can do so and simply invent their own rules as they go along. In this scenario if there is some sort of disaster, 'the company' who organised the event and is being sued can simply go into liquidation and avoid paying any damages.
I've said it before. The Board should simply change from being a 'company' and become a 'club' for members only. When you join you accept the rules and if you don't like the rules- you leave. If you break the rules- you're kicked out. That's what happens in golf clubs for example.
Women can't be members of some very famous golf clubs and the media and politicians have tried to force those clubs to change their rules. But they can't do anything within the law to force them, because they're not members !!! There's a lesson here.
If you disagree with a law in a country do you leave it? If you disagree with the policies of the government do you leave the country?

At the moment, we don't know what the legal action will entail, so the jury is out at the moment and everything is pure speculation.
Btw, I don't see anyone complaining about the Haye v Chisora event which was well run.
Did Board members get their licences withdrawn for their participation that night. I think not.

Wow I had no idea Michael Cotter was representing Bruce. I introduced Michael to the BBBofC a few years ago and he was briefly an area rep but he could not commit to it due to his busy legal career. Interesting. The Insider wrote:Thanks

Is Jim Evans the same veteran trainer who has looked after Michael Sprott and Patrick Mendy during his time?

Met him in Dublin a few years back. He was training Coleman Barrett who was fighting Colin Kenna for the Irish heavyweight title. Between him and Kenna's trainer Jack Bishop they had a combined age of 140 or something.

Re: unlicensed group plan legal action against brit board
Not been on boxrec for a few weeks but interesting coming on and reading this as i know of an "Unlicensed " organisation who are currently making moves to begin a Pro board to go against the BBBoC but in a similar format to UFC.
Ill not mention who they are yet as it may not even get beyond the initial stage, but i did find it an interesting idea.
I would expect that initially it may not be the top boxers, but if promoted right, it could be an interesting proposition that may then eventually lead to licensed lads defecting.
They have devised a pay ladder which although will take a long time to ever rival the worlds top paid stars it would certainly be competitive with domestic level pro fights.
And theyve also set out plans to include brain scans etc.
It geniuinely does sound a very intriguing idea, that although im sure will not be cheap to establish properly, its an idea i wish id have thought of myself first.

Re: unlicensed group plan legal action against brit board
Best of luck with that idea !!!
I wonder which star boxer is going to give up his Board licence and fight with this lot???
Are the EBU, WBC ,WBA ,IBF and WBO going to extent a welcoming hand and say ' come on board, great to have you !'
Wake up and smell the coffee.

My biggest gripe is how they protect the ref when we all know they got it wrong.
Its almost corrupt the way some of our refs behave.

Re: unlicensed group plan legal action against brit board
What do you mean by "star boxer"? - clearly the likes of Froch, Groves, Degale etc. will stay as they are because they are getting opportunities.dalcumly wrote:Best of luck with that idea !!!

What about other ambitious boxers who are not getting many opportunities at the moment?
You only have to look at the boxers who have taken part in Prizefighter. When it started I thought it was for the novice up and coming boxer and did not think that British title level boxers with ambition to box at a higher level would be queuing up to take part (ironically, often at the expense of the novice boxer).
To me, this shows that there is room for change within the current system.
As long as the safety of boxers is maintained, then surely this can only be a good thing?

So are you saying refs are taking backhanders then ? It's the most difficult job in the world whatever decision they give is always going to upset somebody but to call them corrupt is very strong mate ok refs do sometimes get it wrong in every sport that's just the nature of it

There doesn't have to be money involved for it to be corrupt.spudder56 wrote:SMALL AXE1 wrote:My biggest gripe is how they protect the ref when we all know they got it wrong.

Ok please enlighten me coz I was always led to believe that the fuel for corruption was money or gifts etc
Re: unlicensed group plan legal action against brit board
There are people that like other things than money or gifts; some people like to be around famous and influencial people and to be made a fuss of, it's why a lot of people do things for little material reward.
(And refereeing a boxing match is not the most difficult job in the world).
