And Fury really isn't Irish. I'm not reopening the old debate, and do agree Macklin should be classed as such, but not Fury.reggaereggae wrote:Yeah, Fury and Frampton are the only ones that for that descriptionBlack Sam Bellamy wrote:'Making Waves' is pushing it a bit.
Re: Top ten Irish boxers making waves in Britain
Are lee and macklin still supposed to be fighting each other?
Great fight if that gets made.
Great fight if that gets made.
Re: Top ten Irish boxers making waves in Britain
Only Frampton is a genuine Irish fighter making waves in britain, the rest are either not really Irish fighters or not making waves yet, like Andy Lee who is good, but has not kicked off over here yet, Macklin is a brummy, Fury is not real Irish, if they are Irish then most of us are Irish including me, my great grandfather was Irish, they get about, I think we are going to have to settle for top one Irish boxers making waves in britain, very poor really considering some of the great Irish fighters we have had in the past, they are doing great in the Amateurs though, so things could be good in the future for the pro Irish scene.
Re: Top ten Irish boxers making waves in Britain
Macklin's parents are Irish, he spent loads of time there as a kid, played Hurling for Tipperary up to Under 21 level and considers himself Irish, I don't want to get into the whole debate about it again, but that's Irish enough to me.Anzi wrote:Only Frampton is a genuine Irish fighter making waves in britain, the rest are either not really Irish fighters or not making waves yet, like Andy Lee who is good, but has not kicked off over here yet, Macklin is a brummy, Fury is not real Irish, if they are Irish then most of us are Irish including me, my great grandfather was Irish, they get about, I think we are going to have to settle for top one Irish boxers making waves in britain, very poor really considering some of the great Irish fighters we have had in the past, they are doing great in the Amateurs though, so things could be good in the future for the pro Irish scene.
Re: Top ten Irish boxers making waves in Britain
They've been saying they're willing to fight each for the last 40 years it seems. We'll see them on an equivalent of ringside in 2030 saying how they would of loved to fought one another and how they would of won, blah, blah, blahchiggsy wrote:Are lee and macklin still supposed to be fighting each other?

Both of Frankie Gavin's parents are irish aswell right?expe wrote:Macklin's parents are Irish, he spent loads of time there as a kid, played Hurling for Tipperary up to Under 21 level and considers himself Irish, I don't want to get into the whole debate about it again, but that's Irish enough to me.Anzi wrote:Only Frampton is a genuine Irish fighter making waves in britain, the rest are either not really Irish fighters or not making waves yet, like Andy Lee who is good, but has not kicked off over here yet, Macklin is a brummy, Fury is not real Irish, if they are Irish then most of us are Irish including me, my great grandfather was Irish, they get about, I think we are going to have to settle for top one Irish boxers making waves in britain, very poor really considering some of the great Irish fighters we have had in the past, they are doing great in the Amateurs though, so things could be good in the future for the pro Irish scene.
Re: Top ten Irish boxers making waves in Britain
Yeah, Macklin's situation isn't an unusual one, Kevin Kilbane was born and brought up in Preston, a couple of hundred yards from Deepdale, but his parents are Irish and he's always considered himself to be so as well, turned down the chance to play for England youth teams and played for Ireland.columbo wrote:Both of Frankie Gavin's parents are irish aswell right?expe wrote:Macklin's parents are Irish, he spent loads of time there as a kid, played Hurling for Tipperary up to Under 21 level and considers himself Irish, I don't want to get into the whole debate about it again, but that's Irish enough to me.Anzi wrote:Only Frampton is a genuine Irish fighter making waves in britain, the rest are either not really Irish fighters or not making waves yet, like Andy Lee who is good, but has not kicked off over here yet, Macklin is a brummy, Fury is not real Irish, if they are Irish then most of us are Irish including me, my great grandfather was Irish, they get about, I think we are going to have to settle for top one Irish boxers making waves in britain, very poor really considering some of the great Irish fighters we have had in the past, they are doing great in the Amateurs though, so things could be good in the future for the pro Irish scene.

I can understand that if both of your parents are irish and you're brought very much up with that culture.expe wrote:Yeah, Macklin's situation isn't an unusual one, Kevin Kilbane was born and brought up in Preston, a couple of hundred yards from Deepdale, but his parents are Irish and he's always considered himself to be so as well, turned down the chance to play for England youth teams and played for Ireland.columbo wrote:Both of Frankie Gavin's parents are irish aswell right?expe wrote: Macklin's parents are Irish, he spent loads of time there as a kid, played Hurling for Tipperary up to Under 21 level and considers himself Irish, I don't want to get into the whole debate about it again, but that's Irish enough to me.

A lot of fighters and footballers with Jamacan parents, who where born and bred here are classed as English footballers or boxers, what is the difference ? the same with Arab or Asian, on the one hand people are angry if sportsmen born and bred here don't call themselves English, yet anyone with a drop of Irish blood is Irish, no matter what, what does the passport read ?
Re: Top ten Irish boxers making waves in Britain
Frankie Gavin won the world amateur title for England, not Ireland, Macklin fought for England as well, so did Fury.
Re: Top ten Irish boxers making waves in Britain
And if they considered themselves Jamaican and chose to play for Jamaica, no one would complain, it's their choice. Macklin is eligible for and likely holds an Irish passport and the lads who are considered Irish have more than a 'drop' of Irish blood, usually it's a case of one or more parents being Irish, in which case it's their choice as to what nationality they consider themselves to be.Anzi wrote:A lot of fighters and footballers with Jamacan parents, who where born and bred here are classed as English footballers or boxers, what is the difference ? the same with Arab or Asian, on the one hand people are angry if sportsmen born and bred here don't call themselves English, yet anyone with a drop of Irish blood is Irish, no matter what, what does the passport read ?

I can't believe I am going to say this ...... Re: Top ten Irish boxers making waves in Britain
They were all living here, boxing for clubs affiliated with the ABA, there's more opportunities and funding available here, to go and box for Ireland would be difficult because they aren't based there, you can't move from Manchester to London, but still box in the North West ABAs, doesn't mean they aren't Irish though.Anzi wrote:Frankie Gavin won the world amateur title for England, not Ireland, Macklin fought for England as well, so did Fury.
Re: Top ten Irish boxers making waves in Britain
Yes I agree with most of your points, but if you are very good, the funding will be there and Ireland has good funding for the Amateurs and a good set up, Amir Khan's brother Haroon fought for Pakistan, after being snubbed by GB, that is a massive distance, many Irish footballers play in England from the youth sides all the way to the pros, Eoin Morgan play's for England at cricket and also played county cricket through the youth sides and Kieran Farrell used to travel all the way from Manchester to Northen Ireland to train with John Breen, top Irish trainer.expe wrote:They were all living here, boxing for clubs affiliated with the ABA, there's more opportunities and funding available here, to go and box for Ireland would be difficult because they aren't based there, you can't move from Manchester to London, but still box in the North West ABAs, doesn't mean they aren't Irish though.Anzi wrote:Frankie Gavin won the world amateur title for England, not Ireland, Macklin fought for England as well, so did Fury.

Didnt Frankie say on here that he sees himself as English? Think I read he doesn't have much to do with his old man, that he sees himself as Brummie born and bred.
Morgan plays cricket for England because Ireland can't play a full international schedule. They aren't one of the full members of the International Cricket Council.

He travels on an Irish passport. That's that sorted then, yeah?A lot of fighters and footballers with Jamacan parents, who where born and bred here are classed as English footballers or boxers, what is the difference ? the same with Arab or Asian, on the one hand people are angry if sportsmen born and bred here don't call themselves English, yet anyone with a drop of Irish blood is Irish, no matter what, what does the passport read ?

I was Born in Uk, I have a Irish passport.
you know the area I live in Naji & every Eid celebration young British lads drive around in there hire cars, beeping there horns, waving there Pakistani flags, (not that Eid is a Pakistani celebration but a religious celebration, so never understood why they do it) but never the less, they are proud of there heritage of there parents.
And even though majority of them have never stepped foot in Pakistan, most class them selves has Pakistanis, the country of there parents, it is the culture there brought up in, religion they follow, food they eat, language they speak, in my eyes there's nothing wrong in that.
If your parents are born in a foreign country or grandparents for that matter, you qualify for a passport of that country.
Re: Top ten Irish boxers making waves in Britain
Are you trolling now or you just having trouble grasping the situation? Macklin's parents are both Irish so he has the right to hold an Irish passport and to call himself Irish which he so choses to do so. It's not up to anyone else but him to decide what nationality he is or what flag he fights under. This has been done to death now.Anzi wrote:Doubt he would have one if he was born in England.ApolloCreed wrote:He travels on an Irish passport.
