A lesser known scrap was Ross Hale v Mickey Driscoll.

chacon was a breed apart. the limon ruck was truly incredible but then he went and did pretty much the same against Cornelius boza-edwards!!! I have a theory that he thought he was responsible for his wife's suicide which made him prepared to soak up more than the usual amount of punishment in the ring (and then some) - his resolve because of the tragedy made him able to withstand punch after punch from limon for 15 rounds and then from Edwards for 12.
has there ever been a warrior like bobby chacon?
of course we don't know how much he would have been able to take from ray mancini because the referee did his job.

dave macauley's fights against fidel bassa are extraordinary and worth watching too

In recent years...

Bradley - Prov
Froch - Taylor
Froch - Groves

It's the momentum swings that really get you.

Not sure which was the greatest fight.

Cheers :TU: that was some fight alright, I reckon you'll remember Dennis Berry v Neil Sinclair as well, around the same time - that was unreal.

Too many to choose from, but if I had to pick one, I might go with William "caveman" Lee vs John Locicero.

I'm reading the Marvin Hagler biography and that fight is mentioned, I've not seen it though it was supposed to be brutal and sensational.

I just watched the first Chacon vs Boza-Edwards bout the other day. Epic stuff. I'm gonna watch the rematch soon.

Yeah it was broadcasted on ESPN in Detroit back in the early 80's. I didn't see it until sometime in the 90's when a friend had it on VHS. terrific scrap. There was no air conditioning in the arena and it was a hot summer night, apparently 100 degrees. Al Bernstein says he recalled the event, and felt like he was going to pass out at times, and just imagined what the fighters must have been feeling.
The whole fight is broken in parts on youtube, but here's a highlight reel..

Like I said earlier, it was clearly > Hagler/Hearns. I remember watching it live in Oregon as a kid and we were going deep sea fishing in the morning so everybody was asleep and I was going crazy.

Great call. The 3rd fight is kind of sad to watch in that Bratton takes such a beating, but the rematch which ended in a draw on PBR WNF is one of my favorite fight films. People talk about Floyd Mayweather's handspeed . . .Bratton and Gavilan were faster.

I do think it's hard to rate a fight great when you know the result already. Getting caught up in the moment and not quite being able to believe what you're seeing...nothing else can deliver like boxing.

Fights like Chavez-Roasario, Whittaker-Chavez, Ali-Foreman, Sanchez - Gomez, were all a little too-one sided for me. Lots of action but one guy is clearly in charge of the other. I'd also say the same thing for Frazier-Ali I...after the first 3 rounds Frazier really takes over and the result never really seems in doubt.

But, I watched it knowing the result. I'm sure in the moment it wasn't like that.

I only rate fights I've watched live. No problem stating other fights were great, but a question like this I would always answer with something that had the live drama in tact.

I agree; I do not think I'll forget the last few seconds of Manny v Marquez 4 or Gatti v Ruelas - when something so violent and against the run of play happens it is very shocking and memorable.

I watched Martinez-Williams II the next day...

My mate sent me a message that morning before I'd watched it saying... You MUST watch Williams-Martinez II ...and being hyper sensitive to these things I thought he'd ruined it for me, by putting Williams's name first...

I couldn't quite believe it. Williams had always seemed so durable. Martinez was really something at that time
