I don't believe that.. I think most people will agree that Ricky is quite limited as a boxer.. I don't mean that in a bad way but after his loses to Arthur and Johansson people could see what his limitations.. I think through sheer hard work by Ricky and Excellent tactics in fights by Billy Ricky achieved what he did. Can he win a belt again very unlikely I would think all champions at lightweight and lightWelter would be heavy favourites against him.. I've followed Ricky's career from the start and got to say the big changes seemed to happen when he signed with Matchroom.. Maybe it was a bit of believing in his own hype or maybe his level got found out I don't know. I think back to basics with Ricky work extremely hard and get tactics right in fights. Not going to be able to teach new things this late in his career. A new trainer should work with his assets.

Ricky could certainly learn new things, he's not decrepit or senile; he seems a homebody and a local man, if he is leaving Billy Nelson would he enjoy a move to a different city - it looks so stressful to me. The thing is, even with new skills and new advice he may have overachieved by becoming world champion and defending. I imagine he'd make decent money as a European level champion, still get lots in to watch him and he'd maybe reign for a few years. There are some real tigers at top world level; still, he's proved me wrong before.

Burns has been poor the last few fights so obviously feels a change will help him and I dont see why any of us should criticise him for that. Its a short career in boxing and im sure when he gets to the end of his career he wont want to look back and think he should have done things differently.

If he has limited ability like people seem to suggest then should he just accept that he has passed his best and not aim to improve or fight at as high a level as possible?

He may have been outclassed against Crawford but Crawford has the kind of style that could make many boxers look bad. With the right choice of opponents at the right time and the boost of a new trainer/gym then I dont see any reason why Burns cant have more big nights!!

I'd just like to confirm Ricky has chosen to try another coach preferably in US or England, obviously I'm disappointed but life goes on, nobody can take away what I've achieved with Ricky and that I'm very proud.
I wished Ricky all the best in the future and beleive he can still win a third world title at LW

Bad move by Ricky, he should of stayed with Nelson and moved that 5 foot ten frame of his up to light welter and went after a 3rd world title in a new weight category, Ricky is a proper home bird and won't last 2 minutes in a fast city like London or a big country like America, I think burns will only go backwards with this move

Classy reply, end of the day fighters are insular by the very nature of the sport and confidence is everything, so when they hit a wall with form it's far easier to blame the trainer, makin wt,managers, bad matchmaking rather than face the fact that sometimes your just not good enuf despite all the drive in the world, ask Glyn rhodes who's first to get the blame when a fighter loses?

A fast city like london or a big country like the us?
You having a laugh?

Its not as if he lives in a cave and hasnt met with other humans before? He may miss his family for 8 weeks or so before a fight if he re-locates for training camps but at the end of the day, any income he makes will be to benefit his family and he wont be the first or last person to make they sacrifices.

Like others have said, a good post from Billy and im sure Burns would only have positive things to say in return.

Billy I know we disagree on a lot I'm totally shocked by that, loyalty is very rare in sports and Ricky will not find a better trainer/friend suited for
Him, his loss has nothing to do with you and advice you were
Giving him sounded spot on he just wasn't listening, his change of promotor damaged his career
In my opinion . Are you just training Simmo now?? He will benefit massively from all your attention

Maybe he needs a change, maybe Billy smells? End of the day best of luck to Ricky but you can't help but think that he's found his level now and that amazing run he went on with Billy as trainer will be his peak. I wish him luck but look at hatton once he left Billy Graham. It's hard to improve once you leave a Billy.

Its sad to see when a good partnership that brings success is brought to an end after a comprehensive loss.

Since Burns left allegedly I think the matchmaking has been above his level. It'll be interesting to see who takes up the reigns and how this will change Burns approach.

Best of luck with your other lads Billy ,No one can take away the part you played in Rickys success and as others have mentioned its easy to blame the trainer when things go wrong.

I have thought that in the last couple of fights weight may have played a part in Rickys performances so for you to say LW is that something you agree with ?

I also respect that you may not wish to comment

Billy I think this will free up more of your time to focus on other fighters. Rightly Ricky was your main man. I think to improve he needs to go to the US and with someone like Virgil Hunter. I think Ricky's head was turned when he signed for Matchroom. I don't think you could ever find someone who will be as loyal than you were. I won't lie I think something needed to change but for the both of you. Stick too it I'm sure there is more chance of you training another World Champion than Ricky getting another belt.. Good luck to both of you

I don't always agree with Billy but I don't think I've seen anyone stand up for their boxer as much and take as much flak.

A boxer has a right to switch things around but my view is that this is a big big mistake. Ricky was poor before he hooked up with Billy Nelson. That is a categoric fact supported by the record of his fights and his two early career losses. Billy really brought him on. Again, the results speak for themselves. I have had swapped critical messages with Billy on here over the way I felt Team Mitchell avoided certain fighters but you would have to be braindead not to recognise the improvements at a world class level that the boxer made under Billy Nelson.

Billy is showing true class by posting on here. And his joke about the giro cheques still tickles me :TU:

Agreed 100% and that post he made earlier in the thread is incredibly classy given the circumstances. Wish you all the best Billy as you've already proved yourself in a professional capacity and now you're showing you're just as quality in a personal capacity :salut:

I think it's a shame personally.

Whilst still just 30 years old Ricky is a long serving pro and I'm not sure if changing trainers would do more harm than good at this stage.

I suppose it's his prerogative to try something different, but I feel Billy knew him as a person and Ricky seemed the type of personality that needed confidence, which Billy gave him.

Burns is a good fighter. Never world class IMO, good match making/ducking certain fights got him to where he is. The first genuine defense against a good/genuine world level fighter exposed him.
