I'm having a slow day. I picked a random DVD.
Alexis Arguello v Kevin Rooney.
According to Tim Ryan, Kevin Rooney has a large celebrity following, including Dustin Hoffman, who is in attendance. Why?
I remember reading in Teddy Atlas' book that Kevin Rooney was suffering from flu, he certainly looks pale and sickly.
The head movement of Rooney immediately brings to mind a young Tyson, uncanny how much Rooney seems to be making a very good simulation of Tyson's upper body movement, right down to his body language. It's a really high-energy style, even for a LWW, so I find myself retrospectively nodding in appreciation of Mike's conditioning.
Rooney started fast, trying to crowd Arguello, and Gil Clancy thinks this is unwise, because he's not a puncher and also 'you are only a slow starter if you are left alone'(regarding Arguello's tendency to start slow).
Arguello landing hard on Rooney's head constantly, despite the faithful adherence to his own teachings of defensive head movement. Looks like he just doesn't have the pop to make Arguello wary of what's coming at him, so he just stands his ground and counters Rooney's head (it's a huge head, I can't help thinking that moving it is futile, because it will always be in range!)
Hilarious exchange between Tim Ryan and some technical guy between rounds, he obviously thinks that his mic is turned off and complaining about a tone in his headset, Gil Clancy says he has the same problem but by the time he gets confirmation that commentary is going out with no issues, we hear loud and clear exclamation of 'HOLY SHIIIT!' from someone at ringside as a buxom card girl enters the ring.(I could swear that was SRL)
Rooney hurt really badly at the beginning of round 2. Shows a lot of guts by continuing to trade punches, but his pace has slowed visibly.
Arguello lands a straight right on Rooney's face which makes a loud, sickening smacking sound and Rooney falls like a sack of potatoes. Gil Clancy had just stated that Arguello has not carried his power up from LW and BANG!!
Rooney looking in bad shape, and Arguello looks concerned. Hovering around the stricken Rooney, no signs of celebration.
The Hawk is here! Praises Arguello's power, Arguello is equally respectful. Classy guys. I don't imagine that the lack of animosity affected anybody's enthusiasm to see these two guys fight each other. I wonder if they would behave differently today, with so much more money on the line and so much more pressure to get more.
That's all really. Killed some time.
Random fight.
