Whilst still just 30 years old Ricky is a long serving pro and I'm not sure if changing trainers would do more harm than good at this stage.
I suppose it's his prerogative to try something different, but I feel Billy knew him as a person and Ricky seemed the type of personality that needed confidence, which Billy gave him.
Agree at 30 years old the style is well and truly set and he could end up caught between styles if he does go with a different trainer and approach at this stage of his career.
Very similar to Ricky and Billy from Manchester this scenario!

Gonzalez or Beltran?
Crawford. Neither gonzalez or beltran imo were world class although beltran definetely exposed him but burns fans don't seem to acknowledge that one due to the broken jaw. Terrible decision that one. However the writing was on wall when crawford was made mandatory, no way would they have took the fight otherwise and they couldent really vacate and move up like they did when broner was made mandatory at 130.

Rio, Crawford and Gonzalez are world class fighters both would beat any british LW, Beltran however wasnt world class imo Ricky would have beaten him comfy had he not sustained his injury.

I struggle to see who can get anymore out of Ricky only 1 person who I would say could improve Ricky's tactics and that's Adam Booth but I don't think that would be worth the change in trainer think overall for Ricky.. Billy would be better. Only option I see is Shane Mcguigan he has more modern training methods and feel he could maybe get a little more out of Ricky physically. I hoped that they brought someone else in to train Ricky and Billy was still involved as the main trainer. I hope Billy stays in the sport he has so much to give knowledge wise..
Physically isn't where Ricky needs to make changes, he's fit and strong already, he needs to change things technically to improve and get back to the top.

Gonzalez world class?? Based on what.....Schooling burns for 7 rounds then quitting while way ahead on the score cards??? A world class fighter would have found a way to finish the fight rather than quit. He ran out of gas and lacked heart. As for beating any other british fighter (murray and Flanagan may have something to say about that) maybe he would but does that make him world class?? Also its very easy to say burns would have beat beltran without the broken jaw, but he shouldnt have let him break his jaw. Bottom line is beltran beat burns comfortably.
Obviously Crawford is world class which is why I was saying this would be a one sided fight when it was made.
Rio Gonzalez is an exceptional fighter who his leauges above flannagan and murray and Mitchell imo that is, its not Rickys fault he wasnt prepared for 12 hard rounds so he quit rather than come out for the next round coz he knew he was in with a stronger more determined fighter than himself, skill wise and punch power wise he was class
Good luck to both Ricky & Billy in future endeavours.
I disagree with the comments that Ricky changing trainers at age 30 automatically means doom & gloom. Every fighter is an individual. Some thrive off varied trainers whilst others grow alongside the one.
Both Lennox Lewis & Arturo Gatti performed better after switching trainers after their 30th year.
And before people get het up saying Ricky is not in their league, I'm just saying that some fighters adjust at a later age while others don't.
If Ricky FEELS he needs a change then it is for the best. If he's doing it because others want him to then that could be a problem.

I think Gonzalez exposed Ricky's level, he'd beaten no one of note but a lot of stoppages tbf and he was outclassing Ricky the belt holder. Was he a mandatory or voluntary? Terrible match making.
Then he gets Pacmans tough as old boots sparring partner..I mean if he eats Mannys shots for pocket money Burns was never going to dent/dissuade him.
All great preperation to fight a slick switch hitting yank.
When the pile of cash has dwindled he'll probably rue the day he joined Matchroom

Ricky can always get fitter and stronger.. As for learning new things? Like what?? In order to do that you change a boxers style.. Ricky needs to learn to maximise the skills he has.. I believe Billy was very close to having Ricky at his best.. Can Ricky get better.. Yes definitely but who's the man to do that.. I see 2 options Shane Mcguigan or Virgil Hunter both will maximise different things for Ricky
To be fair Ricky fought his mandatorys but matchroom could have fought the case of 3 in a row which never happens!! I think it's brutal dropping
Billy when it is Ricky with the problem, since Mitchell I also heard he was bigtime and taking on herba life as meal replacements which suggested weight issues, I can't see Ricky coming again as I feel he's gonna be fed to the domestic scene as that's where the money is, Mitchell, Murray, Crolla, buckland, matthews, Coyle. So many of them out there !

The herbalife thing is nonsense Jamie,Ricky says its shit and wouldn't even use the recovery drink.
Ricky makes LW just fine

One thing in my opnion he could Change straight away is to stop sitting on the ropes , his last few fights he seems to take a few moments on the rope and absorb a lot of pressure . I cannae get my head round that to be honest

Ricky has always done that normally very good defensively on the ropes.. I think before a lot of fighters wasted energy when Ricky was on the ropes. But I agree that's something he can change. Get him to spar up Davie Mcallisters gym in Aberdeen.. Would soon teach him to stay off the ropes haha

I agree Billy regarding Gonzalez. Gonzalez has a lot of talent and in terms of pure boxing ability i'd fancy his chances against Crawford. The issue is that he either doesnt have much heart or he needs to really work on his fitness.

I wished Ricky all the best in the future and beleive he can still win a third world title at LW
CLASS POST BILLY.
all the best with your new champions in the making sir

I think Shane McGuigan had 3 schoolboy fights and trained Freddie Flintoff, don't make me laugh
I know a man who used to be a pro and he and his son train with Shane McGuigan and they really rate him; I think he packed the boxing in as the expectations around him being Barry's son took away any enjoyment and replaced it with pressure and stress. A very good trainer doesn't have to have had 100 amateur bouts and 25 pro, sometimes they are the ones too stuck to try anything new.
So now trainers need to have been ex pros or world champions do they?
Looks like theres a few fighters gonna need to ditch their team goin by this kind of logic.
I'm thinking of applying for Wengers job, my lack of time in top level football will leave me open to new ideas and I will have lots of refreshing input!
