Astonishingly bad refereeing in Bruno-Bugner.

Post by deadpan »

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uDnJT1RmHU

I just watched this for the first time since fight night. John Coyle's refereeing makes for grim viewing (from 31.40 in). He allows Frank to tee off on Bugner as he's sat on the bottom rope, counts a clear pull-down from Bruno as a knockdown and then lets Frank pounce on Joe a split second after the count.

I know the country wanted a Bruno win, but come on.

I tend to agree with you. The film of the fight speaks for itself.

Always thought John Coyle was a bit of a ' look at me' merchant really.

He was at a Terry Marsh dinner i was at once, and in the champagne reception lounge before the dinner all you could hear was JC banging on to some businnessman about how he had reffed all over the world and met all the top celebs. Just loud enough for everyone else to hear!

He used to run Contender boxing equipment shop as well in Wolverhampton.

Thanks....enjoyed that trip down memory lane.
None other than Jeff Fenech working in the Bugner corner...forgot all about that one!

Forget the ref, it was an astonishingly bad performance from Bugner.

John Coyle was a great referee, probably one of the best this country has ever produced and also very well thought of around the world.

Well Bruno-Bugner was certainly an off day for him.

Coming from you, that means very little.

I expect you enjoyed John Coyle's needlessly waving off a still aggressive Ross Puritty and giftwrapping the star fighter, Vitali Klitschko, the 'knockout win'.

Yeah it was the right decision, stopped because of cuts with neither Puritty or his corner complaining as I remember.

Don't think it was fun in the crowd that night, but thats another story.
Bruno was a pretty dirty fighter when given the chance, lots of rabbit punching , and they've got to hurt.
The home fighter will always get the benefit of the doubt in any country, and John Coyle isn't a bad ref, he's just remembered for his poor points more nowadays.

The way Bruno was allowed to wade in after the count was appalling.

Haha - one small cut that wasn't bleeding, in the eleventh rd.

As far as complaining, Puritty was far too accustomed to getting screwed by countless referees, judges and sanctioning bodies.

Does it? I'd not heard too many complaints about Howard before Froch v Groves. Was the stoppage terribly early? Anyhow, if your most famous off night can result in the biggest domestic showdown since Bruno v Lewis and an economic shot in the arm to the tune of many millions, was it still an off night?

Coming from our top Ref? Probably means more than a little.

One of the good things about this forum is that guys like Howard come on and share opinions. It really pisses me off on when folk are needlessly rude to them.

Well said Trojan. The sport needs doers not talkers. Howard spends a huge amount of his life supporting this great sport. If someone on the forum thinks his job is so easy they're welcome to go and try then come back and I'll repsect their opinion more. Give something back to the sport rahter than just sit behind a keyboard personally attacking the fella.

Back to the post, there an Ali tribute up North on 22nd May, its got Bugner coming with Earnie Shavers. I think also London & Dunn are part of it too. Think I'll give that one a look, just for Big Earnie himself. :box:

Ah, the pack mentality. I can almost hear these faecal-smothered primates braying their chests and shrieking at their keyboards.

I'm sorry that abstract concepts such as skepticism, contemplation and critical analysis are confusing and frightening to you. Give it a few millions years and, who knows, you might yet develop a cerebral cortex.

Are you looking in the mirror? It was the pack mentality that led to the vilification of a top class referee, accusations of a fix, etc... after what was ultimately a 50/50 stoppage call.

Glass houses throwing stones here, but your massive personality problems--not least of which are your overweening narcissism, your breathtaking arrogance, your sociopathic levels of aggression, your complete lack of empathy & your dismissive general smug-cuntiness--make me discount you from conversations almost immediately.

Which is a shame, really, as you obviously know a bit about boxing. It's just a pity you obviously know fornicate-all about human beings.

EDIT: After some deliberation, it's more of a shame that you don't know as much about boxing as you think you do.
