Why aren't boxers leaving promoters en masse overseas ?

I was just wondering what's going on in the UK compared to lets say America. The amount of British boxers leaving their promoters is at unprecedented levels, but in America it is about the same as its always been.

Surely they can't just have better contracts over there ?!

All British promoters save for Eddie are having their top fighters walk away, with varying degrees of difficulty in doing so.

When boxers try to leave lets say Goldenboy or Sauerland, it seems they aren't allowed to. Helenius had a go at leaving Sauerland, and they just wouldn't let him.

In the UK it seems to be different.

I was wondering if that might be a factor. Is the contract fit for purpose then ?

I figure one of the contract-breaking events that's been happening is a failure to pay the boxer on time. One party thinks that as long as the money gets paid at some point, then the agreement should stand. The other party thinks or is advised its grounds for termination of said contract.

I've never seen a BBBC contract, I wonder if they stipulate how prompt the purse must be paid ?

Yes they do stipulate but the problems start when boxers/managers etc sign non board contracts as well which in fact negates the board contract if it goes to court so basically anybody signing a non board contract is in effect causing their own problems usually they sign contracts with limited companies whereas board contracts are between individuals only

That's a management contract, not a promotional contract, the promoters have their own legal contracts.

It strikes me that something's happening over here that isn't happening elsewhere, it seems to have become quite cutthroat in the UK - if a promoter hasn't got a good TV deal, the fighters are off. Not sure if in America there's more TV opportunities ? The contracts in the UK don't seem to be able to stop fighters walking out. All these guys that have gone to Matchroom, they can't all have been out of contract.

TV is the reason. The big name fighters in other countries tend to be signed to the company's with the biggest TV contracts.

The problem in this country is that a number of promoters were pushed out of such contracts in 2012 (one jumped in 2011 and has his own company, but that cannot compete with Sky in the eyes of some fighters).

I thought it was an intriguing subject, and the replies have been interesting.

I've certainly learned something today. Having previously thought every country on the planet spoke English, spent the same money, and followed the same rules, my eyes have been opened. This illumination clarifies many things that have been troubling me
