I wouldn't rule Lyle out vs Wlad, let alone Arreola/Stiverne. If Klitschko was scared enough of Povetkin to literally jump into clinches, what would he do vs Lyle?
Re: In today's heavyweight division could Ron Lyle win a title
No.
Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, the past often seems better than it is. I look back at old heavyweight contests and yes they are thrilling often and exciting but are those boxers really better than today's? I doubt it. People knock today's heavyweights but that probably is as much because the American's aren't ruling the roost.
If the Klitschko's were American they'd be seen in a completely different light and so would today's heavyweights.

Yes. I don't believe he's the type of guy who'd have a long tenure. But he'd hold it for a while...maybe multiple times.
Re: In today's heavyweight division could Ron Lyle win a title
Yes, he'd beat both Klitchko brothers. He could outbox and out slug the 'contenders' of today.
Re: In today's heavyweight division could Ron Lyle win a title
I don't think he'd beat Klitschko, but he'd kick Povetkin or the Arreola/Stiverne winner's ass.

Yes.
He'd batter a Klitschko and would probably laugh out loud at the abysmal condition of men like Arreola/Stiverne/Povetkin et al before crushing them.

Re: In today's heavyweight division could Ron Lyle win a title
Given the vast number of WBS belts that are available my answer is yes. I can see him beating most of today's top 10.
Re: In today's heavyweight division could Ron Lyle win a title
That's exactly what I was thinking. Even if those guys were technically more skilled than him...which I don't think they are, save for possibly Povetkin, and I don't think he is either.Tuan_Jim wrote:Yes.

Lyle would be in WAY better shape, and would outhustle those guys so dramatically it wouldn't even be funny.

I'll give him a fair shot at beating most or even all of the top 10 contenders today. But I have reservations about him beating Klitscko.Tomasino wrote:Yes, he'd beat both Klitchko brothers. He could outbox and out slug the 'contenders' of today.

Giving the benefit of the doubt to a long reigning world champion over a man who was never more than a mere "contender" has nothing to do with personal bias. Yes I agree that Lyle came from a stronger era of heavyweights. And you might have also noticed that I gave him a good chance of cleaning out today's top 10. But Klit would have my vote to retain his title. Incidentally, I am not a big fan of either Klitschko. Its just difficult to pass up on a chance to disagree with some of you guys that anyone including Chuck Wepner would have beaten them both solely because of the year they were born.Tomasino wrote:drunkenpiper36 wrote:I'll give him a fair shot at beating most or even all of the top 10 contenders today. Sure he could, we have Chris Arreola and Bermaine Stiverne fighting for a belt. Chagaev, Ibragimov, Povetkin, Valuev......
I think the distinction here is, could he win a belt, as opposed to could he become the heavyweight champion of the world. I think the answer to the latter is no, but stranger things have happened. Just ask Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson.

If he didn't he would be Wlad's best win by a mile and he would be forced to fight way out of his comfort zone. Jab and grab wouldn't work with Ron.
Re: In today's heavyweight division could Ron Lyle win a title
Ron Lyle could accidentally win a title in today's heavyweight division
Re: In today's heavyweight division could Ron Lyle win a title
From 72-77 Lyle was good enough to be a contender in any era, and in 74-75 he was good enough to be a champ.
He almost was NABF Champ when he lost to Foreman, one of the craziest, greatest fights ever, and he completely could have won that by KO as easy as he lost it.

It is if you beat a prime George Foreman to win it.drunkenpiper36 wrote:DaveyMac wrote:

Yes, but the NABF? I thought we were talking WORLD titles.

Re: In today's heavyweight division could Ron Lyle win a title
If that becomes the question(absolutely any title), then of course the answer is yes. As it would be for almost anyone.
I mean pretty much anyone has the pan-pacific latino or what have you title at one point or another.
For what it's worth, I think your point about Foreman was a good one, in regard to a "world" title. Even without the NABF part, it shows something about Lyle in regards to his potential level on any given night.
