General Question

Post by Ezzard »

from someone who knows very little...

How do experts of the amateur game regard the current era in Amateur boxing in comparison to past eras? Are we about par? Or better/worse?

Hope you don't mind sharing your expertise with me.

Lightyears behind...........

Even those who are involved in the port on a daily basis would struggle to name more than a couple of internationally renowned fighters.

Participation numbers have plummeted.

I AM NOT AN AMATEUR BOXING EXPERT BUT WITH THE NEW GENERATION OF AMATEUR BOXERS I HAVE SEEN A BIG DOWNFALL OF WILL TO PARTICIPATE, LACK OF HUNGER FOR THE RING, LACK OF COMPITITION, UNWILLING TO TRAIN HARDER OVERALL, DESIRE TO BE WORLD CHAMPION IS AT A ALL TIME LOW, OFFICIALS NOT WILLING TO GIVE THE TRUE WINNER OF A ROUND HIS OR HER DESERVED ROUND OR FIGHT, OFFICIALS ALLOWING FIGHTERS TO RUN WITHOUT FIGHTING IN LAST ROUND ONCE THEY KNOW THEY ARE WINNING THE FIGHT.
SOME OF THIS CONTRIBUTES TO POOR PARTICIPATION THESE DAYS.
EVEN OLYMPIC BOXING IS SORRY AND CRAPY THESE DAYS COMPARE TO 12 YEARS AGO AND PAST OLYMPICS. VERY WEAK.

In my opinion the lack of good amateur boxers has to do with the fact that all of the great "coaches" are diminishing from the sport. Most coaches today, do not know what they are doing, and in turn discourage most of these young fighters from continuing in the sport.

However, with all that said and done, I do believe there are some up and coming young amateur fighters out of Central and Southern California with tremendous heart, ambition, and skill who will dominate the sport in the 2020 Olympics, moreso at the pro level. I am more than certain these young fighters will bring back our glory days of boxing professionally and in the amateurs. It's going to be a long haul, but it will be worth the wait.

CALIFORNIA HAS ALWAYS HAD TOP COMPITITION WITH THE MELTING POT OF HUNGRY IMMIGRANTS FROM ALL NATIONS WHICH HELP BUILD A STRONG AMATEUR PROGRAM. I KNOW YOUR GOING TO SAY USA BOXING DON'T ALLOW IMMIGRANTS TO GO TO NATIONALS BUT WHEN YOU HAVE PLENTY OF SPARING WITH GUYS YOUR OWN AGE IT MAKES FOR GOOD TRAINING SESSIONS PLUS THEY ALSO SPARR WITH THE PROS.
THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN BAD AND GOOD COACHES SO NO NEED TO BLAME COACHING THEY ARE VOLUNTEERS AND AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED THEY ALSO PROVIDE SOME KIND OF LEADERSHIP FOR BOXERS AND MANY BOXERS DON'T HAVE A SOLID FAMILY FOUNDATION AND SOMETIMES COACHES FILL IN THEIR PARENT GAP.
1986 SCALLUM? TRY 1996 TO DATE DOWN HILL. YES USA HAS SOME FUTURE TALENT BUT THAT IS FUTURE RIGHT NOW.

No doubt that rules changes effect things but when I watch the ams it seems to me that the ability level is pretty constant and has been since I started watching decades ago.

But I stress that I am no expert.

YOUR RIGHT ABILITY LEVELS ARE PRETTY CONSTANT WHICH IS WHY USA AMATEURS ARE NOT DOING BETTER AROUND THE AMATEUR WORLD CONSTANT DOESN'T MAKE FOR BETTER FIGHTERS BUT DOES KEEP COMPITION AT A LOWER LEVEL WHICH ADDS TO NO MEDALS. WITH ALL THE EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING METHODS THESE DAYS NO REASON OF CONSTANT LEVELS OF BOXING IT SHOULD HELP BRING OUT ABOVE CONSTANT LEVELS OF YESTER YEARS.

Thanks for your posts. Looking at past winners at the world championships...it seems to me that a gold medal back in Kazakhstan 2013 is as worthy as it was in Belgrade 1978.

SORRY TO CORRECT YOU BACK THEN GOLD MEDALS WERE WORTH A GOOD SIGNING BONUS WITH PROMOTERS WHICH THESE DAYS THE VALUE OF SIGNING BONUSES IS LOTS LOWER IN VALUE. AND EVEN THE AMATEURS THAT NEVER WON A MEDAL WERE OFFERED DECENT SIGNING MONEY WHISH THESE DAYS ISN'T EVEN THERE ANY LONGER.
