Outrageous Kevin Evans never went to the olympics. Politicians (ones who would have done well in a military dictatorship in central Asia) in sport - thats amatuer boxing

Ah, has it changed? - it used to be win the WABA's and you were going.bigped wrote:stujones wrote:Coco wrote:He didn't get selected, the Welsh ABA in their wisdom have decided not to send a full squad, in fact the super heavy division is the only division not being represented
Will he appeal, sure he has almost a right to go there? Surely he has passed the qualifying criteria.
Isn't that a bit like a Dwain Chambers getting the qualifying time and winning the AAA's and then not being selected.
I guess what the WABA are thinking is maybe he hasn't shown the greatest loyality to the sport over the last 3 years domestically and perhaps thought his entry in this years competition was a bit taking the piss over the standard who have been fighting regular and trying to get the spot.
However, if that's the case then sure the WABA could have not allowed him to participate in the first place.
In essence what Kevin has done could be compared to what Ronnie O Sullivan did last year... retire comeback for the big one and then win it with ease. Ronnie's win last year didn't look good for the sport as a whole and the general standard and that must be why the WABA have done a two finger salute. Although, they should have not allowed him entry as this was always a likely scenario given how poor the Welsh Super Heavies are.
Kevin could win that tournament one handed and not trained for the next 10 years - unless someone comes out of the blue with a bit of real talent.
you need to meet the criteria to go to games which included going to camps and training sessions and tounrys abroad ect to gather points as far as am aware

Can't really argue with him not going when Audley won Gold in 2000, Price got the Bronze in Beijing and Joshua won Gold in London, the only time he could feel hard done by is 2004 and I don't know if he qualified or not for Athens.Fat Git wrote:Outrageous Kevin Evans never went to the olympics. Yeah, I do wonder if Evans could have considered a step down to Heavyweight though during his prime years.expe wrote:Can't really argue with him not going when Audley won Gold in 2000, Price got the Bronze in Beijing and Joshua won Gold in London, the only time he could feel hard done by is 2004 and I don't know if he qualified or not for Athens.Fat Git wrote:Outrageous Kevin Evans never went to the olympics. Indeed, he was a world championship silver medalist at heavyweight in 1999, rocked the great Felix Savon in the first round in the final, I don't know what happened and why he never went but I do know amateur boxing in Wales is extremely political.stujones wrote:Yeah, I do wonder if Evans could have considered a step down to Heavyweight though during his prime years.expe wrote:Can't really argue with him not going when Audley won Gold in 2000, Price got the Bronze in Beijing and Joshua won Gold in London, the only time he could feel hard done by is 2004 and I don't know if he qualified or not for Athens.Fat Git wrote:Outrageous Kevin Evans never went to the olympics. I think calling it political is polite..... its a mess. I know many people who have "boxed for Wales" cos they know the kit man.Fat Git wrote: Indeed, he was a world championship silver medalist at heavyweight in 1999, rocked the great Felix Savon in the first round in the final, I don't know what happened and why he never went but I do know amateur boxing in Wales is extremely political.
Way too many friends and family involved in a higher echoleons of Welsh Amateur boxing and its a case of who you know. There was no pride in representing Wales.

Joe Calzaghe, of course, was not picked by the Welsh ABA to go to the Olymmpic trials, despite winning 3 British ABA titles in 3 years
