Zactly.
Re: 3rd best HW ever?
What a debate. I'm almost convinced that Vitali actually beat Byrd and Lewis.
Hell, maybe we should throw in a win over Tyson while we're at it.

I never have understood revisionist history.

Now can we go back to discussing men whose best wins weren't over recycled 1990s fringe contenders?

Sam Peter, Kirk johnson, Danny Williams, Herbie Hide, Chris Arreola, etc. weren't recycled when Vitali beat them, and some of whom he defeated after taking 4 years off from the ring and being in his late 30's. Corrie Sanders was old but also coming off a big win. His resume is weak I'll grant you, but not as bad as people make it out to be.

Re: 3rd best HW ever?
Sam Peter, Kirk Johnson and Chris Arreola are notable only for being some of the most incomprehensibly obese men to heave and bellyflop their way into a boxing ring. They were all in utterly shameful physical condition.
Herbie Hide, that gutless, heartless, fragile guy biffing clubfighters Damon Reed and Willi Fisher in WBO 'title' fights and raving over why the world wouldn't include him in the important Holyfield/Lewis unifcation fights. What a great fighter he was.
There are men without a win in world heavyweight title fights who would beat up Vitali and his sweaty parade of lardmonsters.

Re: 3rd best HW ever?
Their physiques weren't pretty. But that doesn't mean they couldn't fight or that their standing in the division was poor. His performances against them were fairly dominant and one sided. The man doesn't have a stellar resume but I'm not going to judge his opposition on the basis that those men aren't runners up for a beauty contest either.
Re: 3rd best HW ever?
Then judge them by the fact that half of your list's best wins consist of a victory over Oleg Maskaev...

Not bad criteria given that Oleg Maskaev was actually a pretty good fighter, but I think I'll ad a few additional points. A fair number of them had good amateur careers, respectable professional records, were ranked when he fought them, were fairly big guys who could crack and had even been in a tough scrap or two. Again I've already acknowledged that they weren't a stellar list of challengers but I'm not exactly comparing Vitali's resume to Muhammad Ali's.

No, but you are committing a cardinal sin of not denigrating a Klit. If you mention their name then you must always say something derogatory about them.drunkenpiper36 wrote:Not bad criteria given that Oleg Maskaev was actually a pretty good fighter, but I think I'll ad a few additional points. We all know the point you are making regarding Byrd and everyone has used a similar argument at some point or another to defend someone…who also lost…
Byrd up by a point though… That’s the story of this thread I’m afraid.
Nobody wants to talk about anything other than how crap the last 10 years have been. And there’s no more fun to be had than jumping on someone who has a different viewpoint.

True.. I'll just recant everything I've said and give everyone what they want to hear...
Chuck Wepner KO 1 both Klitschko's on the same night.
....The End....

That makes more sense than what youve said already.

Sometimes you have to dumb things down to better suit the audience.
