Where now for Mick Hennessy?

Post by chad »

He's lost Chris Eubank, lost James DeGale and Tyson Fury has a 2 fight deal with B0xnati0n. Whilst the Maximuscle Tournament has 2 more rounds to go on Channel 5 the only real up and coming "star" fighter he has left on his roster is Kid Galahad. No doubt once he has invested the time and money to maneuver him into a world title shot Eddie Hearn will step and convince Galahad to terminate his agreement.

How long can Mick realistically survive? Will Channel 5 drop him once the Maximuscle Tournament is done? What can Mick do to turn things around?

Got to agree. Where is the incentive for promoters to invest time and money trying to build a star whilst there is another promoter lurking in the background waiting to lure the talent away once all the hard work has been done? I'm concerned about what happens if the other promoters just jack it in. Eddie has no track record at all of building a boxer from scratch and turning him into a household star. Also what happens if SKY slash their boxing budget and drop the sport from their schedule completely? Not unrealistic as SKY and BT Sports are set to go head to head in December as the bidding process starts for the Premiership TV rights for season 2016 / 2019. Analysts expect both companies to bid big, and aggressively like never before to secure the majority of packages.

Can you really see Eddie going cap in hand to the likes of ITV, Channel 5 or launching his own boxing channel to keep his fighters on TV should it all go tits up with SKY? Me neither, I think he'd just take over another sport in the Matchroom empire and boxing would quickly become a distant memory.

Spot on mate fast Eddie doesn't need boxing and like you say he will do something else just goes to show how much loyalty is in this game mick along with other promotors have invested loads of time and money in boxers and have been stabbed in the back several times but it has always been like that in this game mickey duff summed the game up years ago with his quote if you want loyalty get yourself a dog I really feel for mick at the moment but deep down I believe that mick knew this was going to happen at some stage

He's still got Fury who is likely to be mandatory for the world title.

He still got Galahad too hasn't he? Fury and Galahad at least gives him something to re-build on.

I agree unfortunately.

I often post comments about how it is a promoters job to actually promote a boxer - the job title kinda gives it away - but any promoter will look at what has happened with Hennessy and just say "what is the point" ? ......

The Fury fights on Channel 5 are barely worth watching anyway. All he ever does is fight cruiserweight binmen who are a foot shorter than him and 15 years older than him. And even then he manages to get knocked on the canvas half the time anyway.

And DeGale's weren't much better, fighting people with decent sounding records but not much pedigree. Then when he eventually won, after losing concentration and struggling in the mid-rounds, you'd get Al Bernstein spunking himself about the high quality DeGale's performances.

If Channel 5 have any sense, they'll focus on smaller hall domestic or European level fights. They don't have the budget to make big fights, pure and simple. But what's wrong with watching hungry young fighters working their way up the rankings? I'd rather see two young boxers fighting for a British title they both want, rather than some one-sided fight by Fury who then comes out and boasts that he can beat anybody.

I've enjoyed the recent Galahad fights, and the Maxinutrion thingy tournament has presented decent scraps for the most part. Why not show more of those sort of fights, rather than Tyson Fury?

And for fucks sake, televise more Lenny Daws fights. :witzend:

Yeah, I wouldn't write off Hennessy yet.... his record for maybe sticking to a TV company might not be great, but who else in the last 10 years had worked to show live boxing via 3 terrestrial outlets.

Its was all rumoured that 5 were going to pull the plug, then they announce the tournament. I don't know how it is doing rating wise but lets hope bigger TV companies with bigger budgets take note if it is doing well.

What 5 need to invest in is advertising these bills - forget the plugging of an 90's Steven Segal movie, get people aware that there is live boxing on.

Both Eubank and Degale seemed very impatient from the get go..... lets not forget it has been less than 2 years since Degale signed with Mick - after 1 or 2 fights he was already publically complaining about his lack of a title shot.

I think the lack of security from 5 is causing a problem with boxers signing/leaving him. If Hennessy signed a 3 year deal or something then you'd see a flood of fighters coming to him.

Does Channel 5 even really care about this Maxi tourney?

I'm not so sure considering they havent even bothered to show the whole thing in its entirety, fair enough we only missed the Clarkson/Duncan fight but if the Senior/Hill fight wasn't stopped early that would have been limited to highlights too

They care enough to show it. You could see that as glass half full.

I mean, wasn't there some news after Fury and Haye was announced for Sky Box Office, that Five announced on it's twitter feed that they weren't going to show any more live boxing? It turned out it was an employee of the channel that had jumped the gun a bit, rather than an official announcement. But I doubt that tweet came out of nowhere, even if it wasn't officially green lighted. There were obviously thinking about dropping boxing.

As it happens, they've announced a tournament that will commit them several televised dates. And none of the light heavies involved are what you'd call household names.

That's better than what we all thought was going to happen a year ago, which was they'd drop boxing completely.

People talk about the problems of Channel 5 not showing the full tournament, yes it is frustrating and I guess they could use one of their sister channels to show the full bill (Like ITV used to do with the undercard being on ITV 4 and main event on ITV 1). However, we must remember that they are not a dedicated sports channel and ITV and BBC in the "Golden Age" of Boxing were not much better.

Benn vs Eubank 2 had another world title on the bill, it got literately 10 seconds of footage. Same with Nunn vs Little in one of the biggest upsets in UK boxing history, hardly any footage.... so lets not have the rose tinted spectacles when comparing five's coverage to the "Golden era".

If McClellan vs Benn wasn't such a cracker there wouldn't have been any coverage of Mike McCallum defending the world title.... not just ITV, no undercard shown on McGuigan vs Pedrosa.

Surely Mick also has Hughie Fury assuming injury doesn't get the better of him and possibly access to Eddie Chambers via the Fury's. he needs to look at young exciting British fighters there are some out there.
