Referee John Radison of the United States, gave Jackson a standing eight-count, but when it was apparent Jackson could not continue, he stopped the fight at 1:45 of the second round and awarded the victory to Savchenko. The loss was the 15th in 173 fights for Jackson. Savchenko, a teacher, raised his record to 112-8” (Reno [Nevada] Gazette-Journal 1-30-77:13).

Savchenko did well not to be knocked out and how he managed to recover from the first knockdown is still a surprise to many. Gomez caught him with a hard right to the head and he went down like a log, but he fought his way up and was able to protect himself after the mandatory eight-count and actually kept himself in the picture” ([Kingston, Jamaica] Gleaner 8-24-80).
