George Groves's mental strength
Re: George Groves's mental strength
Froch is not the one who consistently abandons his game plan and unravels under pressure.
On Groves ability to floor Froch I think this is being overstated. Froch ran into a counter defenceless and that situation is unlikely to arise again.

Re: George Groves's mental strength
Really? Froch isn't Mayweather. He stands statically with his hands by his hips and has little to no head movement. I'm a Froch fan and love his spirit but it doesn't last forever. Everyone has a tipping pointTrojans44 wrote:Froch is not the one who consistently abandons his game plan and unravels under pressure.

He got hit with a right hand with his hands down and that is very likely to happen again.

Agreed. And it was the successive right hands before hand that set the combination up.palooka wrote:Trojans44 wrote:Froch is not the one who consistently abandons his game plan and unravels under pressure.

I wonder if Groves wil go for it earlier and stun everyone by stopping Froch in the 1st round?
Re: George Groves's mental strength
So did I and a few others on here. Jermaine Taylor put him down, why wouldn't the bigger puncher Groves not be able to? Groves is a big puncher, something that was evident before the Froch fight.danconnollyeire wrote:This. Re: George Groves's mental strength
I'd say that Groves is the hardest hitter in the division and Froch has the best or 2nd best chin (Chavez Jnr can take some hammer). Froch has traded on his toughness for a long time and it's not really the best gameplan; I think he'll come apart this time, he's 10 years older than Groves but must have 20 years worth of hammer on his body. Boxing is a young mans sport and only excellent defensive fighters like Mayweather and Hopkins can ply their trade in their dotage.

I suppose the fact that Kessler and Abraham couldnt do it made people doubtful a bit I guess.SNG wrote:So did I and a few others on here. Re: George Groves's mental strength
No, he's the one who either goes in without a game plan, or completely ignores it to start with. Froch runs into counters all the time, for someone who's been at the top so long, his defence is shocking, even his own punches are wild at the best of times.Trojans44 wrote:Froch is not the one who consistently abandons his game plan and unravels under pressure.

Taylor done it at world level & groves hadn't even competed at world level.SNG wrote:So did I and a few others on here. Re: George Groves's mental strength
Abraham was never really a one punch banger though, at middleweight he was very strong and used that to grind people down. Now he's moved up to super middleweight, he's too short and hasn't got the skill set to make up for not being able to bully opponents. Kessler did wobble him on a few occasions as well, Robin Reid wobbled Froch, his chin isn't unbreakable and never has been, after a long, tough career, it's starting to crack completely and when it does, he has nothing left.columbo wrote:I suppose the fact that Kessler and Abraham couldnt do it made people doubtful a bit I guess.SNG wrote:So did I and a few others on here. Re: George Groves's mental strength
I agree on the weight thing with Abraham but some of his knockouts at middleweight were vicious! Look at his knockout against Gevor in particular.expe wrote:Abraham was never really a one punch banger though, at middleweight he was very strong and used that to grind people down. Against who? JTs SMW career is awful, and he was never a banger at MW.hurlock wrote:

I don't think either hit as hard as Groves.columbo wrote: I suppose the fact that Kessler and Abraham couldnt do it made people doubtful a bit I guess.
Re: George Groves's mental strength
Yeah that could be said. Kessler did have some KO's in some of his earlier fights though.SNG wrote:I don't think either hit as hard as Groves.columbo wrote: I suppose the fact that Kessler and Abraham couldnt do it made people doubtful a bit I guess.

Re: George Groves's mental strength
I said on here before the first fight that ANYONE who George catches clean would be in bother.
Re: George Groves's mental strength
Not sure if he punches as hard as Stevenson (when he was at super middle) but I imagine it would be a close run thing.mickey1975 wrote:I said on here before the first fight that ANYONE who George catches clean would be in bother.
Re: George Groves's mental strength
When i look at Groves , I do see a very confident lad , and too be honest , i look at him and think his he acting ,or is he for real , or is he deluded . Groves looks to me like he's from the league of gentlemen .
I think he could fit right in there wether he's acting or for real ,, I've not worked it out , he has to be confident knowing he put Carl on his arse , but on the other hand he has to be dillusional if he thinks Carl cannot stop him AGAIN . .
Suppose when you way it all up , his apparant super confidence , his so called lack of nerves , then take in to account , the red hair , silly suits , and just his general demeanor , you would be looking towards the he is'nt really acting at all , he really would fit into that movie the hills have eyes quite well , and without any acting lessons .

I said months ago that Groves is the hardest hitter in the division now Stevenson has gone.columbo wrote:Not sure if he punches as hard as Stevenson (when he was at super middle) but I imagine it would be a close run thing.mickey1975 wrote:I said on here before the first fight that ANYONE who George catches clean would be in bother.
Re: George Groves's mental strength
Thing is , its not just how hard you hit , at that level its what you can take has well , because pound to a penny YOU WILL get caught ,,, Has we already seen .
Re: George Groves's mental strength
I really don't think it matter how confident, cocky or mentally strong someone is out of the ring, mental strength is what happens in the ring.
And that also includes facets like composure under extreme pressure.... fans, personal expectations, loved ones, fatigue and a world class operator going for you.
For me, whilst I still think Groves would have survived and I think Groves should have got a decision, I did think he failed this target. Instead of making what should have been an easy win an actual easy win.... the occasion and Froch's tactics got to him and started to fight the wrong fight.
Against Degale he stuck to his gameplan 100% and in that fight it must have been tempting to change (when James came back into it).

Re: George Groves's mental strength
Yeah, Froch rarely 'appears' to fight with a gameplan and lacks basically defensive skills, head movement, blocking etc (which is strange seeing as his coach is the team GB coach. Ams focus mainly on the basics)palooka wrote:I'd say that Groves is the hardest hitter in the division and Froch has the best or 2nd best chin (Chavez Jnr can take some hammer). Re: George Groves's mental strength
To be honest he lacks basic offensive skills as well, his punches are slow and far from perfect, a lot of wild swings in there. Footwork's poor as well, head falls over the front foot far too often, he is really lucky to have the chin he has, as well as being so tough, fit and strong, without that, there's no way he would have been world champion.danconnollyeire wrote:Yeah, Froch rarely 'appears' to fight with a gameplan and lacks basically defensive skills, head movement, blocking etc (which is strange seeing as his coach is the team GB coach.
