Re: 2014 Youth World Championships

Post by mike222 »

This competition starts at the weekend so here I will try to identify the main contenders.I will do predictions once the draw has been made.
LIGHTFLY
The favourite is Irishman Brendan Irvine winner of the Pavlyukov where he defeated the best two Cubans including their World Junior Champion Yoandris Argilago who misses this competition.Russia,as ever, will have a strong team and are likely to go with Syvatoslav Varankin who despite a surprise loss to a German recently is clearly talented.Thailand are bullish about the chances of their Asian Champion Thani Narinman who won that tournament quite comfortably.Kazakhstan have a trio of top boxers and the best maybe Elnur Zeynullinov although Narinman beat him at the Asians. At the lower weights Asian boxers have traditionally done well and I expect this to be no different.Ecudorian Carlos Chusin is the Pan Am champion where he beat American Nico Hernandez and European Junior Champ Armenian Davit Asatryan are possible contenders.Indian Shyan Kumar is highly rated at home
FLY
There are some truly great boxers at this weight including two World Junior Champions American Shakur Stevenson and Irishman Willie Donaghue but it doesnt stop there.Dmitri Asanov from Belarus won the Pavlyukov where he edged out Russian Pavel Federov in the final and he reached the quarter finals of the European Youth Championships.Federov in turn holds a recent victory over Cuban World junior Champion Maikel Franco who misses this tournament.England's best chance may come at this weight with big punching
Muhammad Ali who has missed out on tournaments due to his country's recent suspension.Azeri Mashud Yusifzade has also beaten Maikel Franco and won a silver at the 2013 European Youth Championships and has a big chance.
Kazakhi Kuanish Nurmukhanov has been injured of late but if fit will be tough to beat
Bantamweight
Cuban Javier Ibanez is the clear favourite having won the Pavlyukov in both 2013 and 2014 beating the top Russian Sulyman Bammatovin the process.Bammatov himself is a World Junior Silver medallist and has beaten Pan Am champ Henry Lebron from Puerto Rico and top Uzbekhi Ikmoldon Kholdurov in the last year.Others with medal chances are European Youth Champion Gary Cully from Ireland who lost recently to another Uzbeki Shukurzhon Rakhimov who in turn lost to Ibanez.Albanian Rexheldo Zeneli won a bronze at last years European Youths and Kazaki Sultan Zaurbek is the current Asian Champion and Brandenburger cup winner
Lightweight
Kazakhi Ablaykan Zhusopov is the AIBA 2013 junior boxer of the year, the current Asian and Brandenburger Champ and will be a big favourite for Gold.Russia can send either Temirlan Batydev or Maxsim Krivstov both very experienced and talented and either is a medal hope.Moldovan Dorin Bucsa is the 2014 Pavlyukov champ and a recent silver medallist at the World Juniors.Victories over American Isidro Ochoa, Ukrainian Artur Prygoda and Serb Florian Sabo highlight his chances.Cuban World junior champion Alain Limonta lost in the prelims at the Pavlyukov but is much better than that

LIGHTWELTER
Another Kazakhi Ayan Kalybekov is the current Asian and Brandenburger champion and comes with a big reputation but there are others that I like including 2013 European Youth Champion Azeri Javid Guliyev and the Russian Pavlyukov winner Bilbert Tuminov who beat Guliyev in that tourney.Ukrainian Viktor Petrov has lost recently to both Guliyev and Tuminov but is always there or thereabouts including winning Silver at the Europeans and a bronze at the 2011 World Juniors.
Vladislav Tsugui from Moldova the 2013 European Junior Champion and German Wladimir Fruehsorger are others to consider.
WELTER
Ukrainian Olexey Tokarchuk won the Pavlyukov earlier this year beating both the Russian and Cuban champions and has to have a big chance here. The Russian Timur Pirdamov will be looking for revenge here and is not to be overlooked.
A trio of Champions in Ireland's John Joyce,Georgian Georgi Kharabadze both European Junior Champions and Kazakhstan's World junior champ Rakhat Marzykpayev will be tough to beat. There are two Uzbekhi boxers either of whom should make an impact, if selected, in Sunatilla Bakhodirov and Makhmud Gaipov. Either will be fancied by their camps.
MIDDLE
Russian Dmitri Nesterov winner of the Pavlukov and Aussie World Junior Champ Satali Levi Fujimaono head the contenders. The latter is on a long winning run whilst the Russian beat the Cuban and the Ukrainian Champs recently. The Ukrainian Ramil Gadzhiev is another World Junior Champion who could double up here and should not be disregarded.
Uzbekhi Bektemir Melikuziev is the Asian Welterweight champion and moves up in weight here. His only loss since January 2013 was to the aforementioned Gadzhiev.
Irish boxer Luke Thomas is capable of a medal

LIGHTHEAVY
Another Kazakhi comes here with a big reputation in Vadim Kazakov winner of the Brandenburger and the Asian Championships but he faces another strong Russian in Islam Tekeyev here.Tekeyev won the Pavlyukov and is a big danger. The home nation have their best chance at any weight with Blagoy Naydenov who lost narrowly to Kazakov recently but will be confident of a reverse on home soil.
Lively outsiders are Armenian Narik Manaysan and Uzbekhi Azizbek Shukopov.
HEAVY
Cuban Yordan Hernandez has been competing against the best senior boxers at home and has given a good account of himself and despite losing to a Russian at the Pavlyukov is the one to beat.World Junior Champion Robert Marton won the Pavlyukov and is an obvious danger.Armenian Seryozha Hakobyan won a World Junior Bronze back in 2011 but did lose recently to the younger Marton.
Russia have two to pick from in Andrey Shokov and Maksim Kolesnikov and either are potential medallists.England's Daniel Dubois stopped the Kazaki Asian Youth Champion in Germany recently and on that form is a big danger to the major contenders.
SUPERHEAVY
Russian Marat Kerimkhanov won the Pavlyukov recently but had a tough time beating American John Luna in the final, Darmani Rock is preferred to Luna here and despite a relative lack of experience could surprise.Others to watch out for are Azeri Muhammad Tairov,German Granit Shapa,Hungarian Laszlo Kumar and Moldovan boxer Dmitri Lupo.

Saw Darmani Rock win very decisively over Luna at Usa Youth Tournament at Super Heavy, Rock has like onky 20 fights but is clearly the best Super Heavyweight in Usa, once he gets more experience he can be best on Planet Earth

The good news is that the draw is up on the AIBA website, the bad news is that no matter what you download the only thing you can get is the draw at 49KGS.

Is there any reason they are not seeding these fighters?

Draw looks good for USA. Lot's of the Boxers have Russia in the other bracket. I think half can get medals, and hopefully 2 or 3 golds. Good Luck Team USA!!
