Amateurs that never turn pro.
Amateurs that never turn pro.
I don't really understand why someone like Kevin Evans has never turned pro, anyone have any information?
Re: Amateurs that never turn pro.

He was on solid sponsorship and funding, it was a lifetime ambition to go to the Olympics, also thought the pro's was a bit of a dishonest set up.
He has a nice gym, so enough money comes in, a nice house etc he is happy with his lot.

I wish Dick McTaggart had turned pro
Re: Amateurs that never turn pro.
A lot of the top Irish amateurs never turn pro, possibly because they feel the opportunities aren't out there for them.

And im guessing because they get a nice bit of funding and they can lead comfortable lives on that doing something they enjoy :)expe wrote:A lot of the top Irish amateurs never turn pro, possibly because they feel the opportunities aren't out there for them.
Re: Amateurs that never turn pro.
If there was more money available as a pro, I think more might turn over, but while there's no big shows on in Dublin, the money isn't there and they have to go to America like Nevin has and Jason Quigley's doing.columbo wrote:And im guessing because they get a nice bit of funding and they can lead comfortable lives on that doing something they enjoy :)expe wrote:A lot of the top Irish amateurs never turn pro, possibly because they feel the opportunities aren't out there for them.

You can look at it 2 ways - either the money isn't there in the pro's, or the money is too good to stay amateur !expe wrote:If there was more money available as a pro, I think more might turn over, but while there's no big shows on in Dublin, the money isn't there and they have to go to America like Nevin has and Jason Quigley's doing.columbo wrote:And im guessing because they get a nice bit of funding and they can lead comfortable lives on that doing something they enjoy :)expe wrote:A lot of the top Irish amateurs never turn pro, possibly because they feel the opportunities aren't out there for them.
When you look at the top amateurs today, they are on £30k tax free, free cars, free training facilities, free nutrition and medical support, they stay in free flats in Sheffield and fly all over the world boxing.
As a pro they will have to pay all of these costs, plus trainer, manager, promoter etc. and then start worrying about selling tickets.
Unless you have an "angle", an Olympic medal or are of the heavier weights, then I would imagine that a boxer would be much better off financially staying amateur.
Re: Amateurs that never turn pro.
Whilst I'm not a huge follower of amatuers Cammarelle has looked solid when I've seen him fight.
Perosnally thought he beat Joshua at Olympics had he turned pro after Beijing in 2008 he would have fought Kiltschko by now.
If I'm not mistaken the Italian Goverment paid him good moeny to stay amatuer after 2008 though.

Folks are also forgetting a vital factor - pro boxing is way more dangerous and will definitely result in some sort of damage.
Additionally amateur boxing has a different culture - there is more team spirit; more belonging, more community. I'm fairly sure that if you talk to Pros, they will be most nostalgic and missing their amateur days and trips away with the team.

Expe, if you don't have an angle, or squad selection as an am you pay subs and fight for a trophy. The ones you're on about are the only ones who are going to be offered good deals!

Pro boxing is far more serious & lonely

Think that's a great point.reggaereggae wrote:Folks are also forgetting a vital factor - pro boxing is way more dangerous and will definitely result in some sort of damage. .
Re: Amateurs that never turn pro.
Two great amateurs who never turned pro were as mentioned previously, Dick McTaggart and Larry O'Connell. I spoke to Larry a couple of years ago and he said he once had a conversation with McTaggart about it. They both agreed that even though they were world class amateurs they didn't 'like being punched on the face', and if they'd turned pro, the longer fights would have meant the chances of getting punched would've increased. This wasn't a joke, O'Connell was perfectly serious . They both had very lucrative financial offers to turn, and neither were tempted.
I haven't heard any other explanation.

I disliked him from his pre conference interviews; now I know for certain that he is a full blown w@nker
Re: Amateurs that never turn pro.
Though I've warmed to him; he's no threat at all to Groves - I imagined at first he fancied a go but he's just messing about. He'll look back in 10 years and laugh about messing about in the limelight. I don't like how Carl comes across and I think Groves will beat him bad but getting mad at Lee Froch is beyond pointless.TerribleTerry wrote:What a complete attention whoring bellend.palooka wrote:https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j ... 8239,d.ZWUG0mez wrote:Gaydar Gaydarbekov
