I can't see how Gatti beats the Professor, how does he do it for you, Palooka?
Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
I just imagine that at 130lbs and over 12 rounds Gatti would be too busy and powerful, he'd impress the judges a lot and Nelson could be outworked and look for a perfect counter that bit too long. Gatti took some discouraging at that weight and he hit as hard as anyone (even Gomez). It would have been a terrific fight and if I'd won money on it or lost money I'd have enjoyed watching.Tomasino wrote:palooka wrote:Gatti UD win over Nelson

Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
Azumah Nelson better boxer and hit harder than Angel Manfredy. He beat Gatti)
Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
He did Vladiimir but the triangulation theory doesn't really work in boxing. There were styles and fighters that Nelson struggled with, there were styles and fighters that Gatti struggled with. Gatti wasn't a push over and Robinson may well have turned a win over Nelson, and Manfredy was no slouch at the time he beat Gatti. The Gatti that beat Ruelas would have given Nelson a big headache.
Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
Though Calvin Grove pushed him close and Leija drew and won against him? Ruelas really gave Nelson some grief first fight, let's not turn Azumah into a monster - he was fantastic and some styles gave him real problems - he was always better in the rematch. No Tomorrow wrote:No way in hell Gatti beats Azumah

Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
Gatti at SFW beat Harris Patterson twice and Ruelas. Not sure how that's enough to convince you he beats Azumah. Especially when you have Azumah beating three SFWs much better than Gatti. Gatti can't outbox Azumah, can't out trade him and wouldn't knock him out. Sorry man Gatti would be taking an easy L

Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
FWIW I've got any version of super-feather Azumah doing Gatti late on in a hellacious war-for-the-ages. I don't care how big he was at the weight (clue: fvcking enormous) but no-one who takes that many punches is beating Azumah Nelson at that weight, imo. I'd love to see it though, but it'd be a dismantling.
El Cepillo would have a good chance at upsetting him, from that list. But I certainly wouldn't bet on it. The others are a might too predictable.

Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
My thoughts exactly. If the Azumah circa the fenech rematch shows up then Gatti would take a lot of punishmentDatsue wrote:FWIW I've got any version of super-feather Azumah doing Gatti late on in a hellacious war-for-the-ages. Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
Maybe Freitas has an outside chance simply because he was such a damaging hitter....but it is a slim chance at best and Nelson would need to be sloppy on the night and would quickly revenge it. Freitas was very decent and he boxed over in the UK a few times.....still find it strange that a huge country like Brazil has produced so few world champions of note. Basically, the brillant Jofre and Freitas.
Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
Fan of all four of them, but I think Nelson beats them. If I had to pick one I think would have the best shot, I'd go with Casamayor.
Gatti would wind up spending twelve rounds looking like he hadn't chosen the right sport, I believe.

Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
Azumah is clearly better than any of them. They have size advantages which could make a difference if they could impose themselves.
Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
Grove and Leija were both slick; Gatti was nothing of the sort. Gatti's great moments were against, essentially, a journeyman. I wouldn't think The Professor could stop him but he would absolutely win, comfortably.palooka wrote:Though Calvin Grove pushed him close and Leija drew and won against him? I would pick Nelson over Gatti (and everone else listed here for that matter.
However, Gatti's great moments weren't essentially against a journeyman. Ruelas, Patterson, and Dorin certainly were not journeyman.
Re: Azumah Nelson Versus
Those fights came as he was aging at the end of his career . No one is remembering Gatti for the Gomez and Baldomir fights.palooka wrote:Though Calvin Grove pushed him close and Leija drew and won against him?
