From all these fantasy matches regarding the Cubans, who do you guys think were te top 5 best boxers from Cuba from what you have seen...not necessarily by their record, just to watch...
Here's mine.....1. Hector Vinent...best 63.5 I've ever seen as an amateur apart from maybe Ray Leonard. 2. Gambo at 51kg in Athens, unreal speed and accuracy, purely on that tournament he looked awesome. 3 Savon at his peak around 92-94. 4. Kindelan around 2001 WC and finally Juan Hernandez, who despite losing two consecutive Olympic Golds (92,96) was unbeatable.....
Also did anyone defeat Vinent between 92-96????
Best Cubans...

My Top five:
1. Mario Kindelan 1998-2004
2. Guillermo Rigondeaux 2000-2004
3. Maikro Romero 1996-1998
4. Roberto Balado 1991-1994
5. Teofilo Stevenson 1972-1984
I've done a Cuban All Time Ranking top 40 based on a points system given for medals won. I'll present it after the World Championships.
Hector Vinent lost two bouts (as far as I know) from between the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. An very close (a bit controversial actually) 16-15 decision to Oktay Urkal at the 1994 World Cup in Bangkok. And a robbery against argentine Walter Crucce 12-15 at the 1995 Pan Am Games in Mar del Plata. You can see some of Vinents record on

best cubans
off the top of my head-1 Felix Savon (unparalled for years) 2 Mario Kindelan(despite a couple of strange losses, pure defensive brilliance) 3 Hector Vinent(class) 4.Guillermo Rigondeaux (kiss of death for 2005 championships) 5.Ariel Hernandez(just, there are 20 other canditates)
The best Cuban amateur of all time according to most of us Cubans was Adolfo Horta who did not win an Olympic title but won every other tournament two or three times..
Vinent went from retirement to a Cuban prison due to black market activities -something that every one in Cuba is forced to do because of Fidel's tight laws on consumer products.
Chocolate is credited with 100-0 amateur record but it's not true. More likely 20-0 as has been proven and he fought at a time when Havana papers published very detailed accounts of all boxing including amateur cards.

That was until Kindelan and Rigondeaux came around. They won everything INCLUDING the Olympics two times. And Rigo will probably win one or two more Olympics.enrique wrote:The best Cuban amateur of all time according to most of us Cubans was Adolfo Horta who did not win an Olympic title but won every other tournament two or three times..
