Froch vs Groves: 4 star rating?

Post by Garthfield »

Why is it only a 4 star rated fight on boxrec?

Felix Sturm vs Sam Soliman is 5 star and this only has the IBF belt whereas Froch vs Groves has the IBF and WBA.

How do Boxrec determine what star a fight should receive? Is it just there take on whether it will be a good fight or not?

It does seem very complicated. Also to say that Froch v Groves is a 4 star fight, when a fight between Edwin Rodriguez and Thomas Oosthuizen, on current ratings if it were to happen(unlikely), is a 5 star fight is rather bizarre.

When it comes to such epoch-making Earth-shattering mind-blowing stuff as how many stars a fight gets on Boxrec, I suggest something foolproof & open to scrutiny, which is at the same time commensurate with the gravitas due such an occasion as the amount of stars given to a potential boxing match-up by an Internet website.

In short, I think a goat should be sacrificed & its entrails read. Get a responsible haruspex involved so that people know transparency & fair play are to be served, & we can clear up this blight on the sport forever.

Guys boxrec rankings and star rating system should never be taken as gospel. It's computerised which means it's not going to be perfect, but in general it is usually about right. Is Froch v Groves a 5 star fight? Yes of course it is, and we all know that. In terms of rankings if I haven't heard of a fighter and wanna know more or less his ranking I'll look at both the boxrec and the IBO's rankings (assuming he is rated top 100) and looking at both rankings you can make an educated guess.

When one of the fighters is ranked top 10 P4P on Boxrec the fight is automatically five star.

Is this really complicated?

http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/BoxRe ... escription

Bout Star Ratings

All bouts are rated with 0 to 5 stars.

Men

5 stars = both opponents have 331 ratings points at least ~ best 100 boxers
4 stars = both opponents have 188 ratings points at least ~ best 300 boxers
3 stars = both opponents have 83 ratings points at least ~ best 900 boxers
2 stars = both opponents have 24 ratings points at least ~ best 2700 boxers
1 stars = both opponents have 1 rating point at least = rated boxers
0 stars = one opponents has not even 1 rating point at least = not rated boxers

If Froch or Groves are not rated in the top 100 boxers then I must be watching a different sport.

It's important because I use boxrec's 5 star ratings list on the homepage to see what decent fights are coming up. Obviously I'd have to be living under a rock not to know about FGII, I'd also like to see the 4 star list as well, there's often a lot of interesting fights that don't quite make the top rank (unintended pun).

Boxrec can we have some customization features on the homepage?

Don't get me started on WBA Super belts. Not only does the sheer number of governing bodies dilute the sport but each one of them manages to take it even further.

Ridiculous, we need an overall governing body with the power to stop decisions like Super belts.

I would like to see it changed slightly so rather than being top 100 they would just need to be top 10 in their weight class. Although i'm sure that would throw up some sub standard 5 star fights in the future.
Truth is there is no perfect system, but it is a little worrying that if Froch had faced Fonfara or Chilemba it would be called a 5 star fight.
