I saw several of his bouts back in the 90's. A tough journeyman who was heavily matched against unbeaten prospects, rising stars and contenders very early on. Took a lot of good fighters the distance. Scored plenty of knockouts and even upset a named guy here and there. Wonder if he might have gone a bit further had he existed in a less talent-stacked era and perhaps had better people handling him.

No, he got beat by lots of mediocre fighters and I don't know of a less talent stacked era than the one he struggled in.

Purrity is a journeyman in any era. He was a strong guy with an A+ chin who could put fairly quick punches together, but his output, stamina, and overall level of boxing skills were mediocre.

I mean it's not like he was some bum. Good guy, solid HW.

If I remember correctly, Puritty was a college football player who suffered a big injury and then switched to boxing when his football career was over. He didn't have any amateur fights at all. In his second fight ever, I remember him getting starched by Cleveland Woods on ESPN. He was thrown in with a lot of prospects early on who had deep amateur backgrounds and he lost to nearly all of them.

Today, U.S. trainers are looking for college football players to take up the sport. If Puritty was starting his career now, and he got the attention that someone like Gerald Washington (at Golden Boy) is getting, and he faced trialhorses out of the gate so he could learn his craft slowly, maybe he could've made more money and put together a strong run.

That said, Puritty has nothing to be ashamed of. I thought he beat Morrison. And Wlad Klitschko may end up going down as one of the top heavyweight champs ever, and Ross has a legit stoppage win over him.

He did fine.
