Are Hattontv not doing it this year?
Re: Aba's televised?
Yeah it's 8-10pm next Friday on Sky. I think they're showing highlights of the QF & SF and then each final in full, if I understood correctly.
Re: Aba's televised?
Such a shame no longer on terrestrial TV. When I was a kid even the amateurs where well known names. I can remember going to school and talking about guys like Magri, Cowdell after they had been on sportsnight.
Re: Aba's televised?
It's a shame Matchroom aren't promoting the ABA's otherwise the whole event would've been shown live.

They will have needed Matchrooms approval for the Sky link up. Shouldn't have been hard to get, with Froch training there. It really is Matchroom ABC.The_Don1 wrote:It's a shame Matchroom aren't promoting the ABA's otherwise the whole event would've been shown live.

It's mutually beneficial and the only way Rob can do both.palooka wrote:mickey1975 wrote:They will have needed Matchrooms approval for the Sky link up. Re: Aba's televised?
Doesn't make it right. Why should froch have access to a publicly funded facility and all of the ancillary support? Does he pay for it? How does that work if he does. It's wrong.
Re: Aba's televised?
England boxing can't and won't outsource their flagship event to a professional promotional outfit. They probably charged sky a bit to show the highlights - they are in need of money and handing over one of their money earners wouldn't make sense.

I mean more in the way Eddie had hardly anything to do with Haye-Fury but they went through him. As for Froch, to have a man of his experience, amateur and pro, around to talk to, spar and inspire the lads is worth so much more than his board and lodgings.dbf wrote:England boxing can't and won't outsource their flagship event to a professional promotional outfit. I'm sure it is and I reckon many gyms could do with lottery funding and many class fighters having elite sports workers on hand without the hassle of paying for their services.

Re: Aba's televised?
It strikes me as naive to refer to GB boxers as amatuers. They are full time salaried professional athletes and I see no reason why a British boxer shouldnt make use of the facilities. Where I think there is conflict is the link between Froch and Mckracken, and the fact that Groves is not able to avail himself of the same facilities should he want to.dbf wrote:Don't agree. It's not right that a professional athlete is getting access to facilities (and other perks) that is paid for by lottery and exchequer funding exclusively for the use of GB Amateur (or Olympic style) boxers. I'm wonder if it has been handled officially by GB boxing and Froch?mickey1975 wrote:I mean more in the way Eddie had hardly anything to do with Haye-Fury but they went through him. Re: Aba's televised?
Could Rob do the job if the arrangement wasn't allowed. Carl fights twice a year, and if he's on anything like 10% it will be considerably more than his GB salary.
Re: Aba's televised?
That's a good point mickey but I'm with broomhall and dbf; there's no reason that Froch should be allowed to prosper from lottery funded professionals when other British pro boxers cannot. It may be above board but it doesn't look to be. If Groves needed extra help he'd have to pay for it, same for every other boxer.mickey1975 wrote:Could Rob do the job if the arrangement wasn't allowed. McCracken has done wonders with the British team and has stated over and over it's a team effort with highly skilled people being allowed to do their thing; to me that's fine on the amateur set up and with Lottery and Government funding but the lines are blurred when a top professional athlete is able/does have the access - no matter if Froch is a model pro and it is good for the amateur set up or McCracken. If the same advantages are not allowed across the board then it is unfair and because other peoples money is involved is open to misinterpretation.

I think it shows naivety that you think its right for a professional boxer to utilise funded facilities. I put Olympic Style in brackets because the use of the word amateur is soon to be obsolete anyway. The fact is that they are funded by UK Sport (Mix of lottery and exchequer funding) to compete at the Olympics and win medals. Ofourse they receive a salary but they are prohibited from challenging for professional boxing titles.
Carl or any other 'pro' boxer should not be allowed access to the those facilities unless they are paying for it.
McCrakens role as Performance Director was advertised at around £70k in 2009 on the GB Boxing website. Now you have to believe following the success of 2012 that figure has increased.
Re: Aba's televised?
Though even if Froch were to pay for the services another boxer wouldn't be given the same access - because of McCrackens status. There is a real conflict of interest and it appears that taxpayers and lottery payers money is giving a highly paid professional athlete an advantage.

And what about the ex-Olympians that are all making use of it - Ogogo, Campbell, Joshua - they are all up there now and then.palooka wrote:Though even if Froch were to pay for the services another boxer wouldn't be given the same access - because of McCrackens status. They, including Froch are all probably classed as 'world class sparring' and thats how they get away with it.

It looks like a clique, an exclusive enterprise payed for by other people.dbf wrote:And what about the ex-Olympians that are all making use of it - Ogogo, Campbell, Joshua - they are all up there now and then.palooka wrote:Though even if Froch were to pay for the services another boxer wouldn't be given the same access - because of McCrackens status. How much is Groves spending on his sparring partners etc?
This looks to be a can of worms.

Re: Aba's televised?
Groves wasn't moaning when he was up there sparring Carl himself.
Re: Aba's televised?
I don't think he's moaning now. But was that spar definitely in Sheffield? I had a feeling it was somewhere else.mickey1975 wrote:Groves wasn't moaning when he was up there sparring Carl himself.
