People say an overhand right/left is the most dangerous punch, probably because it's less likely to see coming, but I think a straight right/left (if thrown correctly) generates more power !

Simply from holding the pads I reckon that an orthodox fighters straight right hand is the most powerful punch going when its thrown properly. Although I do agree with what an earlier poster said that the punches you dont see coming do more damage (such as overhand rights or uppercuts)

The straight right hand thrown the way Quiggs was in his last fight takes a bit of beating!

If bodyweight is transferred into the punch (rahter than the common issue with some fighters just throwing the arm) then the backhand is more powerful.
However the hook is more concussive. This is because a hook, if thrown correctly, leaves the peripheral field of vision of the opponent thereby, as the last poster stated, the punch that the opponent doesn't see is the punch that works as the body doesn't get set to prepare to absorb the shot.

Any punch when catching a kid coming on can be devastating, I myself love to see a short right hand down the pipe, mark bowers used to throw a beauty, same Daren dyer :TU:

I myself don't think theres a more devestating punch than a crisp uppercut thrown in close quarters.

there have been some spectacular knockouts from these shots. I'm thinking Smith/Buckland & Enzo/Ovil2 for starters.

Punching power and the effect of a punch on a recipient are two different things; the latter is not always reflective of how powerful the punch was but more how accurate and well timed the punch was.

In my experience , speed and timing are the things that make a knockout punch. I got stunned a hell of a lot more against the lighter sharper boys.with one exception in Johan Perez.the heavier boys had strength that you could feel.the lighter lads, boom! They've hit you and you ain't seen it.theres a real heavy shot that thuds and pushes you back and hurts a bit.then you get the quick ones you really don't see or expect and there's no pain.just a light that goes out and your down.luckily I recovered before 10 and never got knocked out.perez wouldve had he landed flush

I'm no expert, but it I'd say it depends on the mechanics of a fighter. Simple example is that Price has a lethal straight right (def knock himself out), Haye is more of an overhand bomb, Mike Tyson had the uppercut, and Eubank Snr had that devastating hook. Now compare each of those fighters 'specialty' to the others, and they don't quite work the same. It is all about finding what the man is naturally good at and working it I reckon. But then wtf do I know..

Jonny, was there any particular shot that you don't like, or does it change with the opponent?

Don't think there was a particular shot that bothered me regular. If I fighter threw a shot often.hed only land it once or twice until I cottoned on to it.

Straight right or left, thrown properly with the full weight behind it.

Look at Hearns V Duran. That punch would have knocked anyone out.

I think the straight right/left its easier to do 'well' and to pull of in the heat of the moment (correctly I mean - most people on the street will probably throw wild hooks.) I mean at a beginner level of course.
