David Price's next opponent has been named
http://www.BS.com/david-price- ... ny---77547 ... Looks crap to me. I know some will say he needs confidence building fights but to me, all these fights are doing is building a false sense of security and he'll be woefully unprepared for when he eventually does step up in competition again.
Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
It's a tough one though isn't it. There is quite a gulf in level of opponents at heavyweight. You either have the top contenders or the journey men. Not many in-between at Euro/commonwealth level that would give him a few rounds....it is a tough one.
Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
Yeah but a guy ranked 237th in the world rankings is farcical lol. I think Price could beat guys like Chagaev now and if he cant then he's obviously just not good enough and is never going to have a chance of doing anything in terms of world titles.TopGun wrote:It's a tough one though isn't it. i wonder how much he gets paid ?
strage move by his promoters in signing him... its not like he will be making them any money

I'm guessing that thinking of it as a long term investment. Feed him a bunch of cans until and then put him in a big fight they can make some money off and see if he sinks or swims.sweetscience wrote:i wonder how much he gets paid ?

Sadly as much as I like Price as a person I think most of us know the lifeguard will be called for at that point.
Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
It depends upon his realistic expectations; in private he probably concedes that the higher titles are beyond his reach. If there were a world title for how hard someone could punch he'd most likely have the crown on now. There is more to boxing though and he may not have the higher titles in his sights - he may well be content to have another 6 or 7 fights against decent enough blokes and buy himself a house or 2 to rent out.columbo wrote:Yeah but a guy ranked 237th in the world rankings is farcical lol. Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
After the Thompson fight Price said that the reason he lost was fighting too many soft touches. Then he signs for Sauerland & has plenty more soft touches! In my opinion a million fights like this wont prepare him for a step up to championship class.
Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
There's quite difference between fighting a Ukranian journeyman and fighting a Latvian with a fake record though.pyenest77 wrote:After the Thompson fight Price said that the reason he lost was fighting too many soft touches. Price just needs to hover around the outer rankings for now... then they can give him a name, and off the back of that he could well get a title shot. Why risk him throwing him in with tough competition at this stage. Let all the top contenders smash each other around first, and then Price can feed on the leftovers whilst building up his confidence.
Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
I dont see that happening. Let's remember Price lost to Thompson who's in his 40's. He's gonna lose again when he steps up and his opponent doesnt fall over the first big shot that lands on him.Benelio wrote:There's quite difference between fighting a Ukranian journeyman and fighting a Latvian with a fake record though.pyenest77 wrote:After the Thompson fight Price said that the reason he lost was fighting too many soft touches. Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
Price should be able to take on lower top 100 ranked opponents.
It's pretty sad just how little they are prepared to take risks with him.

Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
his recent opponents dont seem any better than the domestic opposition he was beating under Maloney
Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
Strange 1 this as he has a rubbish ranking and clearly has power. Surely there's a higher ranked opponent with less power available.
Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
Though whenever someone is under close scrutiny they get nervous and anxious. Out of the way of a fevered crowd he can at least try new things.keirw wrote:his recent opponents dont seem any better than the domestic opposition he was beating under Maloney

This.
I don't know how much Price or his opponents get paid for these fights, but they can't keep making these fights forever as they won't make a return.
They will pad his record until a "World" title fight against Tyson Fury - this will be a mega money fight bigger than Froch and Groves and Price will get smashed - but the Promoters will get a good return on their money in the end.
Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
Price's domestic fights against McDermott, Sexton, Harrison & Skelton were fine.keirw wrote:his recent opponents dont seem any better than the domestic opposition he was beating under Maloney
It was the massive step up to fight Thompson that was wrong and then the even worse idea to rematch Thompson. He should have fought Sprott or Rogan next, not a world level opponent with decent power.
Pala was the right sort of opponent, this bloke isn't. Slightly better than McDermott is the level they should be aiming for.
Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
But he isnt doing anything new, he is banging out medeocre opponents early, same as before. I thought he would be taking on cagey, durable opponents and learning how to use his jab properly to win rounds without expending too much energy.I'd be happier seeing him pick up a couple of points wins than just adding to the highlight reel.palooka wrote:Though whenever someone is under close scrutiny they get nervous and anxious. Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
At least Price is staying active and at this rate, he is likely to fight at least another 2-3 times this year. By that time, he'll be as ready as he ever will be for another decent step up in 2015. This year is all about getting the basics sorted, building confidence and keeping things low-key.

Chagaev? Seriously. I wouldn't bet a wooden nickel that he could beat Maskaev.columbo wrote:Yeah but a guy ranked 237th in the world rankings is farcical lol. Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
What's the point, he's a busted flush, he just cannot take a punch, he makes Wlad look like Oliver McCall. I was hopeful that Price was the future, I figured maybe his amateur shakiness was down to growing into the weight, but he clearly just cannot hold a shot, there's plenty of b level fighter, and old warhorses who can put one on him, and he end result will be the same - he may have some success at domestic and european level, as he has power and good technique, but ultimately, he's done at world level, no heavyweight can be that susceptible and succeed.ScottDetonator wrote:At least Price is staying active and at this rate, he is likely to fight at least another 2-3 times this year. Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
I partly agree and I am in no way at all saying that he's the 2nd coming but it's all about getting the best out of what he has got. He'll be in at least one big fight under the Sauerland's and as mentioned above, it will be sink or swim time. I wouldn't be surprised if he KO'd who ever they put in front of him either. These fights are a build up to that. Look how Wilder has easied his way into contention.jamesmcdonnell wrote:What's the point, he's a busted flush, he just cannot take a punch, he makes Wlad look like Oliver McCall. Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
Exactly; I'm pretty sure Price would also be undefeated if he'd fought the same opposition as Wilder. Not going to completely write him off just yet. He'll always have a punchers chance against anyone and still have a decent career. Needs a toughish fight after this next though. Someone top 30ish. Fransico Pianeta would be a decent fight for him.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I partly agree and I am in no way at all saying that he's the 2nd coming but it's all about getting the best out of what he has got. Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
Yes Pianeta could be ideal. In the meantime, there's a lot of work he needs to do in the gym. He needs to loosen up a little - maybe lose a little muscle - get the jab out and back quicker, tighten his defence and get sharper all round. While he's doing that he can take these easy fights to build confidence and remind the boxing public of his punching power.
Finding a tough journeyman who can take him a few rounds won't be easy. Skelton was tough, so was McDermott and Sexton. Which fighter is there superior to them yet not as dangerous as Thompson? Like I say, Pianeta could be a good call, or Sosnowski.

Re: David Price's next opponent has been named
Much as I disparaged Thompson, he went the distance against possibly the second best heavyweight in the world. Price is still learning. Some heavyweights take longer to develop than others and he needs a gradual increase in the quality of his opponents and is wise to fight outside the glare of London media. Give him ten fights over the next two years, each opponent a little better than the one before and he might be ready for a Hammer or Jennings.
