Is there a worse division in boxing than HW right now?
Is there a worse division in boxing than HW right now?
Just thinking about Fury punching himself in the face and Wilder recently swinging punches so hard that he fell over. The fact they're two of the top 5 prospects in the HW division really doesn't bode well for the future!
Does anyone know of any genuinely talented prospects coming through that could reignite the division? Joshua & Hughie Fury maybe? Any Americans?

It's horrible and has been so for over a decade now. Best one can hope for is entertaining fights . . if you're turning to the HWs to see skills you're in the wrong place.danamba7 wrote:Just thinking about Fury punching himself in the face and Wilder recently swinging punches so hard that he fell over. Cruiserweight?
Re: Is there a worse division in boxing than HW right now?
I do find it a little amusing when people say the heavyweight division is so poor (dont mean the OP) and then in the same breathe say that Joshua is the future. If the division is that bad and Joshua is as good as people say he is why isnt he being moved quicker? When I say quicker aswell, I dont mean put him in with Fury. Wilder, etc now but even in the domestic scene.

I agree and I've never really looked to the heavyweights to see skills; the lighter weights always have had the best skilled fighters.dempseyfire wrote:It's horrible and has been so for over a decade now. Because he has time on his side. Get him out fighting regularly, let people talk about him and the big fights will come later.columbo wrote:I do find it a little amusing when people say the heavyweight division is so poor (dont mean the OP) and then in the same breathe say that Joshua is the future. Yup! His hand eye coordination is that bad, he punched himself in the face! My point is that he's regarded as a top prospect, which is scary!Horse wrote:People still going on about Fury punching himself in the face.

Yeah but if it's that shit, he shouldnt need to be wrapped in cotton wool.Riddick Blowe wrote:Because he has time on his side. Of course this is true, but the current level is taking the mick a bit surely!? At least the best of the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's had skill.dempseyfire wrote:It's horrible and has been so for over a decade now. Fury's uppercut bounced off his opponent's guard and hit him in the face. Wilder fell over because he swung too much and missed. So what?danamba7 wrote:Yup! His hand eye coordination is that bad, he punched himself in the face! My point is that he's regarded as a top prospect, which is scary!
Neither incident is worth insulting an entire division for, or even the fighters themselves.

Did they really? Heavyweights have never been particularly skillful or mobile. Even the mobile ones like Tyson / Frazier were battering rams.
Wladimir / Ali are about as skillful as you're gonna get at heavyweight and then people moan because it isn't always good on the eye, (granted Ali was in some exciting fights).
If you think it was all exciting back in the day look at Bugner and Bruno. Bruno must be the stiffest boxer I have ever seen. Even Lennox was getting beaten in the skill department by Vitali (ahead on points) before a cut ended things.

Wladamir is massively under rated. We will all one day say he is an all time great HW.
He can only beat who is in front of him. He deserves more respect!

Too bad he didn't pursue rematches with Puritty or Sanders, and opted to rematch the waning Byrd when the still-rampaging Brewster was offered to him.columbo wrote:TopGun wrote:Wladamir is massively under rated. We will all one day say he is an all time great HW.

So he dodged a few fights here and there. He wont of been the first and he certainly wont be the last that's ever done that.Tuan_Jim wrote:Too bad he didn't pursue rematches with Puritty or Sanders, and opted to rematch the waning Byrd when the still-rampaging Brewster was offered to him.columbo wrote:TopGun wrote:Wladamir is massively under rated. Re: Is there a worse division in boxing than HW right now?
OK so I'm a little harsh on these 2 maybe but the question within the thread of is there any genuine talent to reignite the division hasn't been answered with names. I just think it's a really poor division apart from Wlad and it doesn't look like that's going to change.Horse wrote:Fury's uppercut bounced off his opponent's guard and hit him in the face. Wladmir may not be the most exciting to watch, but then again I don't find Hopkins or Ward all that exciting to watch. Come to think of it Mayweather is only so great because he has a big mouth. If Wladamir had a personality like Mayweather then you would worship the ground he walked on. His style is very awkward to beat so you have to admire him. He will probably go down as an all time top 5 HW, the stats don't lie. Emmanual Stewart sang his praises big time.

While I know there's already way too many weightclasses, I really think there needs to be a super heavyweight division, the jump from cruiser to heavy is just ridiculous, you're potentially looking at a 4-5 stone weight difference between 2 fighters.
The heavyweight threshold as it stands today was never designed to take into account giants like the Klitschkos, Fury, Price etc (I know Carnera was around in the 30s/40s, but he was definitely the exception rather than the rule) - guys like these need a division of their own imo. That would hopefully see some more competitive & entertaining matches being made at the bigger weights.

The new division would be the super cruiserweight division. The heaviest division should always be called the heavyweight division.Boxerbeetle123 wrote:While I know there's already way too many weightclasses, I really think there needs to be a super heavyweight division, the jump from cruiser to heavy is just ridiculous, you're potentially looking at a 4-5 stone weight difference between 2 fighters.

If he were a lout like Mayweather I would worship the ground he walks on? What are you talking about? That's an extraordinary statement. "The stats don't lie". Oh but they do. That's why they need to be studied, and subjected to rational analysis. Otherwise simpletons would say: 'This fighter won five heavyweight title fights, he's clearly much better than this fighter who went 0-1 in heavyweight title fights. The stats don't lie!'
And the unnamed fighters above turn out to be John Ruiz and David Tua.

Fair point. I don't think "super cruiserweight division" has much of a ring to it, but I suppose we can work on the name.Horse wrote:The new division would be the super cruiserweight division. Re: Is there a worse division in boxing than HW right now?
The introduction of a super heavyweight division would greatly damage boxing and the change would be hugely unpopular. It will never happen.Boxerbeetle123 wrote:Fair point. I don't think "super cruiserweight division" has much of a ring to it, but I suppose we can work on the name.
