Who will go on to have the best career? (British SMW)

Post by danamba7 »

With SMW being one of the UK's hottest divisions, who do you think will end up with the best achievements/CV when they retire?

Groves for me , Already household name with the Froch fights although will need win this one
this will make him box office and would imagine hes the type to target the big name fights.

defo got a world title in him

Yeah, Groves for me.

Though DeGale will get a title shot at the winner of Froch/Groves. Uncle Eddie will promote it massively as another Battle of Britain.

It'd be funny if Groves beats DeGale again.

Certainly not Fielding or Callum Smith.

I'd say Groves. I rate Degale as a technically skilled fighter but he lacks the X factor for me and I think Groves would beat him more conclusively if they fought in a rematch after the Froch fight.

Why not Callum Smith? I know he's not proven himself like Groves did Vs Froch but he does look promising. Or is it that you think he'll end up a LHW?

No he's not, but he's already had a good career. The others are earlier in theirs.

I don't really see what point you're trying to make.

I went for Groves simply because he is in the driving seat right now.
DeGale's career has stalled and needs to get going again and Fielding and Smith are still relatively green.
Ask this question in a year/18 months and things will probably be very different.

I dont think Groves will win against Froch, as previously said Froch is going to be Nigel Benn's Chris Eubank.

I'd say Groves aswell. Followed by Callum Smith depending on how well he does when he eventually gets stepped up. For what it's worth I think Groves-Degale 2 could be bigger than Froch-Groves 2 in terms of hype and so on.

I think he will end up at light heavy and I also don't think he has the potential to win a world title in what is always a hot division.

The last statement is bizarre.

It wouldn't get anywhere near.

Maybe if Groves loses again to Froch.... then DeGale beats Froch (on points?) .... then Groves v DeGale could be bigger. If they were to fight any-time soon, with DeGale's profile being relatively low (at world level) then I can't see it being anywhere near as big. Though I guess the first fight managed to fill out most of the O2 when they were still novices.

All degale has to do is win his fight in style , bad mouth both fighters before the main event
sit ringside and goad them any oppertunity he can and then everyone watching will buy into the hype and sign the next Eddie Hearn Boxing Extravaganza Bonanza that sky will push for the next few months.

Simple (well maybe apart from winning his fight in style )

Talent and potential Degale is above the others IMO. He really needs to get his career moving and I think he can beat Groves if they box again. I like George but not sure of durability at the highest level.

I suspect i'm possibly in the minority on here.
But as impressive as smith has looked, i just get the feeling that when he gets close to world level, he'll toil.
I think he is a good fighter but it looks to me like he is one of these guys who looks better than he is against lower level opposition because of his power.

I'd like to be proven wrong.

I'd fancy groves again.

But one thing is for sure, he wouldn't get in degales head the way he did frochs. Degale basically played the role of playground bully last time out. He was content taking the role as the bad guy and i felt he rattled groves if anything.

I actually suspected the crap groves took in that build up forced him into taking the mind games approach against froch first time round.

I think there is every chance Groves stops Degale. He has grown to be the better of the 2.

I think Groves beats DeGale easily if they fight again.

I voted Fielding as I just can't help myself from picking the obvious wrong answer in internet polls. It's a problem I'm struggling to deal with and I offer my apologies

I like Groves, but I just can't see him having a long successful career at the top. Maybe Degale has more of a chance of still being in the mix in 5 years

OK...so after I said this in May 2014, things have changed and it's become slightly clearer.

DeGale is now in the driving seat and Groves is needing to rebuild. I would imagine Groves' aim is for a rematch with the IBF champion after a couple of wins against some semi decent opposition.

Callum Smith is certainly looking like the real deal and will surely be aiming for his own crack at a world title within the next twelve months.

Rocky Fielding, after the devastating loss to Smith, needs to get back some confidence after such a shattering loss. Maybe he should look at grabbing the British title after Callum vacates to challenge for a world title.

We could look at this again in another 18 months and I dare say things will have changed significantly yet again...!

Smith is looking the part. Would like to see him in with AA. I think he'd be ready for that next up. Winnable fight for him. DeGale has the Matchroom/Sauerland and Haymon connection so he is in a good position to get the big fights. Hard nights work against Bute. Don't know if it's concentration or stamina issues with DeGale or a bit of both?
