Thoughts on commentary last night and mcguigan

Post by Achybreaky »

Did anyone else but me think the commentary for the williams fight was really bad last night. at one stage they were saying i have audley shading it by one round and even after the knockdown they one of them was still trying to say he was up or it was tied.

Mcguigan saved any credability for them including mckenzie who seems to just agree with barry every time (funny watching his little eyes light up when barry was talking). Every time they cut to mucguigan he called exactly like it was adn after the fight he said audley was terrible and the guy beside him (hangover preventing me remembering his name) looked at him as if to say "shut up you cant tell the truth".

As nice as mckenzie is he doesnt bring anything to the itv coverage and mcguigan carries him all night.

Rant over

I had it 114-113 Audley. Sounds mental I know but you have to score a round on what happens in that individual three minutes and although Harrison was scared to death for ten rounds he was winning quite a few rounds with his pitter-patter stuff and Williams plodding after him and not landing or being tied up.

McGuigan was - rightly - as scathing as I've ever seen a pundit. And what did he score it? 116-115 Williams. Whenever you score a fight by one point, you have to concede it could go the other way.

When you look at the fight as a whole there's absolutely no doubt Williams deserved to win.

I had a brother of mine with me who really isnt a boxing fan in anyway and he was laughing at the commentary as well and he thought williams was winning easy. Granted it was close and a very hard fight to score i feel the commentators were wrong and it almost seemed they wanted audley to get it either that or they have no concept of how to score a fight and if that is the case and they are just 'sports commenators then surely mcguigan should be commentating instead of being down at ringside.

Not saying i think barry would be a good commentator but at least he would bring some objectivity to the role and more than a little credability.

I was shocked people had Audley winning, he simply wasn't doing anything apart from running and peppering a weak jab, but it is of course subjective. Maybe it's just me but i had Williams winning and wide, 116-112 seemed fair enough and with the knockdown too, Danny was a fair winner in my eyes...Audley got exposed as lacking any bottle. At least the crowd booed him which must have made him feel like he was back at home fighting in Vegas :D

Disapointed to see Mcguigan jumping onto the Tyson bandwagon and saying how 'courageous' Mike is?... yeah takes courage to bite an opponents ear off and try and break anothers arm and bite off anothers nipple!.... we could really use more courage like that in boxing eh!...

Good post Ian. :TU:

I will get slated for this but I actually scored the fight a 114-114 draw. At the end of the fight I felt Williams has done enough to win, just. But when I added up my score card it showed a different story. Sure most of Harrisons punches were 'pitty pat' stuff but there was also times when Williams did absolitely nothing but stand there and occasionaly plod forward.

It was a dull and disappointing fight with just the brief moment of entertainment towards the end. Even in this era of weak Heavyweight Title holders I hold little hope of either Harrison or Williams making any impact on the World stage.

I think Skelton is the only one with a chance at taking the world title... he will beat Williams if they fight I think...

I agree, for all his limitations at least Skelton gets stuck in and tries his best.

Also did I hear right during last nights McGuigans post fight rant that he let a swear word slip out? :TU:

Nah, he was just commenting on the cut and Harrison face and how it was bleeding alot

I think though (although he didn't say it) that his tally of 116-115 was being as kind as possible to Harrison. He was right to be scathing and he was right to say Williams definately deserved to win - cause Williams wanted it the more.

He said in one commentary years back (Barry Jones vs Wilson Palacio) that his score card was for Jones but he felt Palacio deserved the nod on agression and desire. You can get instances like that, and this was one of them - but IMO the fight wasn't close, crap but not close.

I thought John Rawling referred to Amir Khan as 'Hamed' at one point - then again, they had just been talking about him.

Steve - when you say 116-112 looked about right, I understand what you mean. If I hadn't scored the fight round by round (impossible for me I'm afraid  ) I would have shared your view. It is different though when at the end of each round you tally them up.

Barry McGuigan was spot on!

I cannot believe that anybody could have scored that fight for Harrison!

What did he do to establish a lead on the scorecards?

I scored the fight round by round, and I think I gave Audley 2 rounds, with 2 even. He did absolutely fornicate all. To me that pawing jab was not a scoring shot, it was merely a distraction.

Audley's effort was quite frankly pathetic, he was clearly petrified for the whole fight, Danny landed some meaty shots early on, and Audley obviously wanted no part of it after that.

Harrison took the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 11th on my card.

Williams took the rest - including a 10-8 round 10.

I think this was more a reference to tyson's speaking tour and putting himself in a position to be critisized for his intelligence orlack thereof and not a reference to his in ring exploits.

I thought the commentary on the night was poor. I think it was McKenzie who observed during the Khan fight "There are no judges for this one, so Amir will want to stop him...", If I heard that correctly then what exactly was he implying? That the ref was going to give the fight to Thorpe...?!

Rawlings insisting that Harrison was somehow in the lead AFTER the knockdown and despite having landed about two punches all night (to William's five!) said it all for me.

And while I realise ITV have to show the commercials, surely someone could have spotted earlier that the inter-round breaks were more exciting than the actual rounds! Indeed if they's switched them around it might have been more entertaining!

I haven't read any post that asks what the ref was doing letting Harrison hold so much, though I'm sure there must be one. Surely he should have warned him for holding, and then started deducting points after a few such warnings?

I see that Williams is now talking of a World Title shot if he beats Skelton... sorry, what planet is this guy from? Williams versus John Ruiz.... Jeez! Where can I get a ticket for that one!

It's all about how you score Audleys "Jab".
The commentators were criticising Williams for just standing there (centre of the ring as it happens) happy to stand out of range of Harrison.
To my mind, Audley was doing the same. Sod all. I was not scoring the "Jab", a tool (it seemed to me) simply to guage range.
When Williams made the effort to come inside, and work to the body, even if lots of the shots hit Audleys arms, I gave the rounds to Williams as he showed an effort to actually punch the opponent. When Williams didn't come inside, I called the round even.
Those who scored Audleys "Jab" saw the fight as a lot closer.
Subjective really.

The commentary was awful... if anything Rawling and Mckenzie seem to be getting worse rather than better... at times it was embarrassing to hear...

Does anybody think that Williams scored a legitimate knockdown in round 2?

I think so. 'Parcel Force' actually fell on top of Williams, but the ref didn't call it. :-?

He's got a good workrate, is fit and seems to have a decent chin, Williams at times seemed shot against Audely last night, he was so slow it was shocking... I can see Skelton steamrolling Williams for a 6 or 7th round ko win...
