Jerry Quarry vs Joe Bugner. What If?

Post by KOJOE90 »

Jerry Quarry and Joe Bugner where two of the top contenders during the golden era of Heavyweight boxing the 1970's. They were also both liable to run hot and cold and unfairly had reputations a 'nearly men'.

But if they had met each other around 74 to 75 who would have won?

How would Quarry handled another clever counterpuncher?

74-75, Bugnar may have peaked and Quarry was on the downslide. Going by your parameters I would probably have to go with Bugnar by UD or late tko. Prime v.s. Prime I would go with Quarry winning an entertaining but clear cut decision.

That would have been a good fight to watch. At first glance most people might go for Quarry, but Bugner - on his night - was a far better fighter than given credit for.

Like the previous poster, I'd say Quarry was starting to slip around 74/75, but Bugner could blow hot & cold at times. At the top of his form I'd go for Joe, but it's not one I'd want to bet heavily on.

By 74-75 Quarry was showing signs of decline, although he was still a formidable opponent when properly prepared. However, Bugner was probably at his best during that timeframe, and when he was on he would have been very difficult for Quarry. I'd go with Bugner by a comfortable but competitive decision.

In 74-75 I think Joe Bugner takes a clear cut decision by perhaps 7 rounds to three. At there best ever though, I think Quarry would out work Bugner and take a one sided decision.

Bugner's physical advantages

The great size difference might work against Quarry but he did beat some top heavyweights that were almost as big as Bugner.
