Cant believe Paul smith is getting a world title shot

Post by Michael bennt »

He hasn't even won the lonsdale belt outright yet, he has beaten absolutey no one of note, his best win is journeyman/club fighter tony Dodson, the 2 times he stepped up in compation he was blown away and knocked out by regale and groves, he couldn't even beat Steve bendall who outpointed him a few years back, he isn't even a top 4 supermidlleweight in Britain, it's a absolute joke for him to be fighting for a world title, this is everything that's wrong with boxing

He isn't even the best super middle in his own city his brother is, just watched a interview and joe Gallagher says he would never let Paul in the same building as a Andre ward never mind the same ring but he will take his chances with Abraham

He is probably more deserving than Paul Butler (isn't he?)

I dunno, is he? Butler is still unbeaten and has beaten fellow unbeaten fighters. Smith got chinned by Groves and Degale when they were both very much still novices.

I personally think he is more deserving. Ultimately you can ask who he has beat but that applies to Butler and the notion that his brother is better than him, well we may know/think that but in terms of their records Paul is obviously ahead with the list of domestic guys he has beaten. If we're gonna try and use the 'Smith is 4th best Super-middleweight in Britain' well where does Butler feature in the UK Bantamweight rankings? You can't have him ahead of Hall, McDonnell or Haskins in terms of his record in my opinion.

For the record I don't think Smith deserves a WT shot without fighting an eliminator against someone nominated by the WBO but as we know the WBO don't do it that way very often.

He is more deserving than Jarrod Fletcher, (who the WBA have just mandated GGG to fight), Stuart Hall, Martin Ward and Paul Butler anyway.

James DeGale is in a final eliminator for his shot but gets a massive fight if he wins a very tough fight.

Paul 'El Miserable' Smith is the world champion of being a moaning twat, he doesn't deserve it he was schooled by DeGale and smashed by Groves. He will lose against Abraham on BN, not Sky, as BN have a deal with Sauerland.

Im not sure mate. I think Fletcher is mediocre and doesnt deserve a shot but his win over Bursak is better than anything Smith has done.

Fletcher is the guy that BJS stopped in 2, isn't he? Crazy for him to be mandatory for GGG...I'd like to say the whole rankings system needs an overhaul, but there isn't even a proper system to overhaul!

He's more deserving than Ward but I'm not so sure about the rest, Smith has beaten Quigley and Dodson(twice) over the last 4 1/2 years to 'earn' a world title shot and in that time has been stopped by DeGale and Groves. Fletcher at least won an eliminator against Bursak who was European champion and has beaten a few other half decent fighters and won the PABA belt since losing to Saunders. Hall had won the Lonsdale belt outright and although he lost to McDonnell and Haskins, then won the Commonwealth title and won an international trinket to move himself up the rankings. Butler has beaten a couple of solid fighters domestically, similar to Smith, but he's also gone down the international route and won the Commonwealth title.

Not only have those fighters won more than Smith, they've kept themselves active and winning fights, in the last 4 1/2 years, Paul's boxed 9 times, winning 7(4 KOs) and losing 2, both by knockout, 4 of those wins have come over journeymen. The other 3 wins came against Tony Quigley and Tony Dodson, the only notable win on Quigley's record is Dodson and Dodson himself hasn't done much since beating Allan Foster for the British title over a decade ago and Foster had never beaten anyone worth mentioning either.

You give reasons for why Dodson and Quigley were not worthy opponents but just gloss over Butler's Commonwealth and Inter-title wins. Can you give me a run down on why any of those opponents are worthy of being mentioned at all. Dodson and Quigley are easily better than Kareem, Nieva and Montoya. Inter-titles are only really worthy of mention if the guy gets his WT shot with that body. Lee Purdy and Stuart Hall didn't deserve their shots, but got them off the back of winning IBF inter-titles of some form. Butler has won nothing to do with the IBF, but conveniently popped up in their rankings. We all know deep down how this happened.

On the flip side Smith only has his WBO ranking due to the work that Frank put in, he should be forever grateful to him!

Dodson and Quigley are no better than Sexton and Donnelly though and Butler won in better fashion than Smith, along with the wins over those fighters, Ali and Gonzalez, and being more active, make Butler more worthy of a world title shot than Smith. Even if the inter-continental titles aren't with the same body, fighting for them shows that the fighter is trying to do something to earn a world title shot and work towards one, not just sitting around fighting twice a year against journeymen like Smith's mostly done for the last few years. You say that Butler has just conveniently popped up in the IBF rankings, what about Smith with the WBO then? He hasn't won any sort of international title, let alone a WBO version, but has popped up at #3 in the rankings. He isn't the best super middleweight in Britain, or even his own family. In all honesty it could be argued that Paul Smith is the 6th/7th best super middleweight in the country and the 3rd best in Liverpool, but he seems to be getting a world title fight on the back of absolutely nothing in terms of victories or any substantial effort.

You do make excellent points early in your post, I obviously just disagree with a few of them. However Smith hasn't just popped up in the WBO rankings, he has been top 15 with them for ages, years, and actually been around about 8 or higher for ages, despite defeats. Am I saying it's right to rank him that high? Absolutely not, but that along with the BBBoC not being able to find suitable defences for him/the Fielding situation is why he has been in keep busy fights only. Also I'm not sure what point your making about Smith not being the best in Britain, it's not relevant at all. Carl Froch wasn't the best in the country when he got his shot at Pascal. And again I made the point earlier that Butler is the 4th best Bantamweight in Britain.

He could of pursued the european title though or atleast the WBO european title. He hasnt actually fought and beaten anyone current in all honesty. The version he most recently beat of Tony Dodson was shot to shit let's be honest.

Well the WBO European was with Buglioni until recently so we know why that fight didn't happen. He hasn't been with Matchroom all that long and in that time has spent a lot of time injured or in limbo with the British board.

I think that Smith deserves a title shot against GGG.

In fact, I would so much like to see the deluded one in this fight that it is one of the few fights that I would shell out £15 PPV to watch :bag:

Eddie Hearn doing a great job of copying Frank. SKY should grow a pair and abandon this monopoly. As for Smith, he's domestic level, at best. Wholly undeserving whatever the WBO's farcical rankings say. I'm sick of Boxing.
