Yancey's legacy?

Post by NYDominican »

Yancey "Yank" Durham trained Leotis Martin, Bennie Briscoe, Joe Frazier, Gypsy Joe Harris and Willie Monroe.

What do you think Yanceys legacy as a trainer is?

Yancey passed away on August 31, 1973. Do you think Yanceys passing took too much of a toll on Joe Frazier?

Had Yancey lived & been in Joes corner for his second and third fights against Muhammad Ali. ------ Do you think Joe would have beaten Muhammad in their second and third fights?

Had Yancey lived, do you think that Joe would have beaten George Foreman in their second fight?

In my opinion because Ali was far from his best in their 1971 bout this is the reason he lost. By 1974 Ali had returned to near his best and beat Frazier in tough fights but clear wins. Having Yank would have not have saved Joe...he did have Futch, Milt Bailey and Benton in his corner after all...

In regards to Foreman then only if Yank was in the ring with Joe to fight George two on one it may have helped lol. Foreman had Fraziers number. . .

Joe Frazier was definitely Yank Durham's finest work as a trainer, but I don't think his being alive would've made any difference in the fights you mentioned. Unless Durham would've allowed Frazier to come out for the 15th round in Manilla...which may have been the case, but we'll never know.

It's for the best he didn't though. Every time I see that fight I always feel like there's a very good chance one of them would've died if they had fought the 15th round. They both were beat up, wore out, and Ali in particular seemed to be completely and absolutely exhausted.

Ali was clearly the fresher of the two. He was also teeing off on Frazier in the 13th and 14th round. Frazier could barely see and probably would not have made it through the last round. He had virtually no chance of winning. It was a prudent decision to stop the fight. Frazier didn't seem upset at all at the time.
Don't see how it would have made any difference if Durham was still there.

As for Durham's other fighters, I read in a newspaper article once that he was Bob Foster's manager.( Some people use manager and trainer interchangeably even though they aren't the same thing.) Was wondering if he was Foster's manager or trainer, and if so for how long?
