Alexander Gurov v David Haye

Post by Evander »

I was fortunate to see Gurov fight live and in person against Jean Marc Mormeck on the Roy Jones v John Ruiz undercard.
Although he ended up losing he put up a good fight and is a quality boxer, Mormeck just basically walked forward and pressured him in order to get the stoppage.
Seemed to me like Gurov was clearly the superior boxer while it lasted.

Since then Gurov has won all of his fights albeit against lower ranking opponents, now he steps in against David Haye whom I have not seen fight.

Any opinions on David Havid

Haye has the power to knock absolutely anyone out, but he seems to lack stamina and doesn't look too hot when people fight back.

Either way, I wouldn't expect this fight to go past 6 rounds.

gurov can be caught early. dunstan and some other guy Ko'd him early. he can also be worn down, as per Mormeck. and he can punch.

but he has the experience at euro level. haye's trying to take a shortcut to the top, i hope he doesn't get exposed again

Gurov is a good boxer with a decent punch and lots of experience... if he gets past the first 4 rounds I could see him outlasting Haye for a stoppage or ko win... Haye early or Gurov late....

Gurov is an excellent euro champ and world challenger...he could give BELL or Neson a hard time, but saying he is a better boxer than Mormeck is plain bullshit. Mormeck had his gameplan, and sticked to it, Gurov was throwing a huge amount of punch from the begining and it was obvious he would tire quickly, Mormeck blocked most of those punches and simply waited to counter hard, and step up in pace as he usually does as the fight goes on...he logically floored then stopped the outclassed Gurov in the 8th...
Gurov could fight Mormeck 10 times he would always lose !

Haye's definitely taking a shortcut. if he manages to blast out Gurov, he'd better stay away from Mormeck. JMM's a fantastic fighter

I agree Mormeck is a very good champ, I've seen quite a bit of him and its a shame he doesn't get more recognition, he's definately the best Cruiserweight in the world I think.

Interesting opinions on Gurov-Mormeck, i have seen this fight and i thought Gurov won the early rounds by outboxing Mormeck and giving him plenty of movement and angles, as soon as Gurov began to tire Mormeck pinned him on the ropes and started having successes en route to a stoppage. I am sure this fight will be explosive and i hope Haye can do it but i am leaning towards Gurov and his experience as time ticks by to Friday night.

of course, Mormeck is a slow starter, he has good defense and generally let his opponents tire in the 1st 4 rounds before putting some pressure...

I think David will need to knock Gurov out early. I fear that if it goes beyond 6 rounds that Gurov could take David out in a later round. But we shall see if any form of training has paid off for David... although I dont think there will be any turntables in the ring for him to show his skills on!

I think if it goes beyond 3 rounds Gurov will stop Haye in around 7. Gurov can be hurt early as proven by Patrice Aouissi, Nate Miller and our own Terry Dunstan so Haye can definatly get the job done but training on Adam Booths machines doesn't seem to give Haye any stamina at all. Gurov is fit and can bang a bit too so this will be interesting.

there's too many questions surrounding Haye. a Hobson fight would've anwered them and prepared him for this step up. i'd be unwilling to pick Haye were it not for Gurov's vulnerability in the early rounds, and tendency to get KO'd on foreign soil.

personally, i don't know how good haye can be or how much Gurov has left.

Mormeck rules so far. I hope he beats Bell, as he'll have win his 2nd unification fight vs another power puncher. You know, I remember the American writers saying how "special" Braithwaite was and how he was gonna thrash Mormeck. I never bought into that.

I'm sure of one thing - Tarver wants nothing to do with either the competitive cruiser division or its leader!

I am supporting Gurov for this one. However I am seeing many similarities now between Hayes career and Audleys. Haye only picks fights he thinks are easy hence ducking out of match ups that would test him.

Haye has sparred Gurov many times and obviously thinks he can beat him easy. Also the money offered to Gurov (I think it is the region of £100, 000?) strikes of retirement payday - hand over your belt. The fact that Haye got a shot at the Euro without even fighting the British Champ shows just how much money talks in this game.

Gurov has had a lot of fights and my question is how hungry is he with a huge payday and big puncher trying to knock his head off?

Haye got his calculations wrong with Thompson - but he did not sparr him before they fought and got a nasty shock........

A lot of people are saying Haye will be vulnerable in the later rounds. Is this just based on the Carl Thompson fight alone, or is there other evidence to suggest he really has a stamina problem?
Haye should now be aware of 1 of his weaknesses and if he is a class operator (which I think he could be), he should acknowledge that, and remedy it.
I would expect he will now train and pace himself better to avoid fading in the 2nd half.
...wonder when he'll learn to keep his left hand up...

I would agree with that. A LOT of assumptions about Haye have been made on the back of that fight. Haye’s preparation was clearly awful for that fight, and I dare say he spent more time with page 3 girls in the build up than in the gym (judging by his ring entrance, and various tales in the build-up). There is a good chance, one would hope, he’s learnt a lot since then. It was a rude awakening if ever he needed one.

But the guy’s physique is superb, and I don’t believe he genuinely has a stamina problem. He just got it all horribly wrong in the Thompson fight by unloading punch after punch and getting knackered.

He’ll last the pace if he has to.

Haye KO 5

haye's never been past five rounds. that's not good for someone stepping up in class. he's never been matched with anyone who could take his shots, thompson aside

THe problem with Haye is he KOs people too early (Nice problem to have) and has to bulk up to cruzer. The hobson fight should be made and almost has been on a number of occasions (I don't think ether fighter is ducking it but there has been a lot of bad luck).

I don't think it would be a bad idea to get haye in with a light punching but durable HW, is Keith Long still around. Those kind of fighters should get him the rounds he so desperately needs

I think might be a step too far for Haye, i really wanted the Hobosn fight to come off first. If he wins though he will really gatecrash the world rankings. But could it all be a bit soon for a man who has yet to negotiate 10 rounds?

Another problem about Haye is that I have doubts about his chin... also he doesn't seem to have good recupertive powers... these are the sort of flaws which you can't improve on really...

never seen gurov fight or mormeck for that matter.

huge fight this for haye. wins it and he closes in on a world title shot. lose it and he'll have to start all over again.

i'm looking forward to this just as much as harrison-williams. :box:

I see it's been said already in this thread but I'll say it anyway...

It is still unclear whether Haye has a stamina problem. Are there any fighters out there at that weight who could throw that many power punches without getting tired very quickly? To me the Thompson fight was evidence of bad tactics more than poor stamina.

I (again like someone else on this thread) am more concerned about how he can recuperate from some being hit. I believe he can take a good shot but not sure how well he can fight back. I hope to be proved wrong as he is my favourite boxer.

Haye's power is indeed impressive but he's hardly an irresistable force. Bear in mind that he couldn't knock Carl Thompson out...

Thompson doesn't have a bad chin but he took a real hammering and never really looked that badly hurt at any point. Haye then blew himself out and was taken to pieces.

Haye will hopefully measure himself a bit better, but the worry is that when he cannot blow his opponent away, does he have the control and the defensive skills and tactical nous to control the fight over 12 rounds?
