dream fights
After being lucky enough to see many of the great fights of the past thirty years or so, and having built up quitw a collection of old fights, like many other boxing fans one of my favourite pastimes is comparing great fighters of different eras and trying to work out who would have won had they met. Heres a couple of mine, any comments, other dream fights?...
Muhammad Ali (1967) vs Joe Louis (1940) ...Ali always moving would befuddle Louis, who would keep on the pursuit and occasionally catch Ali with sharp hooks, but Ali would be too fast and would out punch Louis in their toe-to-toe exchanges. Ali on points.
Henry Armstrong vs Willie Pep this would be a real classic, Peps boxing skills against Armstongs blistering non-stop attacks. Very close I think for the first ten rounds but then Pep would wilt from Armstrongs overwhelming strength and perpetual motion. Armstrong by 12th round ko.
Roberto Duran vs Alexis Arguello this would be another blistering encounter, but Durans speed would be the decisive factor. Duran wins on 11th round ko.
Stanley Ketchel vs Harry Greb ....what I d pay to see this... Greb was perpetual motion while Ketchel had iron fists. A real war. Both were awesome but I d edge towards Greb, a little bit faster with the better chin, Greb might be flooered once or twice in the early rounds but this would just make him fight harder and he would be landing two punches for Ketchels one. Greb by decision.
Earnie Shavers vs George Foreman this would be like a repeat of Foreman vs Ron Lyle, with both going early for the knockout, multiple knockdowns would ensure but I d lean towards Foreman by 5th round ko.
I d be interested to read anyone elses dream fight match ups, after all where are we if we can't dream?....

Thanks for the replies, I think this is a subject which fascinates most boxing fans. Bobby Chacon vs Artuo Gatti at Junior lightweight!!...WHAT A FIGHT THIS WOULD BE!!!.... I actually thought about this one before when I first started this page but didnt include it as I couldnt make up my mind as to the result. Having thought it through I think Id lean towards Chacon, at his best Bobby was a slick boxer-fighter with a great right hand, although he was slowing down by the time he won the Junior Lightweight title he was still canny, look at how he would fight off the ropes, (especially in Limon4 and Boza-Edwards2) he wasnt a punch-bag by no means, in those fights Bobbys remaining skills and amazing willpower and heart made him one hell of an opponent to beat.
I see a fight between Chacon and Gatti being very exciting with Bobby hitting the deck a couple of times early on but returning the compliment by the middle rounds, by the late rounds both would be battered and cut but it would be Chacon who would ultilize his greter experience and savvy and win by either late rounds stoppage (13th or 14th rounds) or a close points verdict.
Another one here. Henry Armstrong vs Roberto Duran... what a fight this would be. One question has to be at what weight are we talking about as both these legends fought at Lightweight, Welterweight, and Middleweight ... Armstrong is in my opinion the greatest Fetherweight of all time without a doubt... as well as winning world titles at Fether, Lightweight and Welterweight Armstrong was robbed of the Middleweight title when his fight with Cerfino Garcia was deemed a draw.
Anyway back to Armstrong vs Duran... in these two we have two of the greatest fighters pound-for-pound ever, Duran was one of the greatest infighters ever but also a great boxer with great skills which he never recieved true recognition for, Armstrong was the greatest exponent of infighting and perpetual motion their has ever been (save perhaps Harry Greb). At Lightweight I d give the edge to Duran, at this weight he was truely awesome, as well as his well documented power at this weight he had tremendous speed which I think would give him a clear edge and see him to a points victory. At welterweight its a tough one as Duran was a little erratic at this weight!... but judging by his brilliant win over Leonard Id still lean towards Duran on points, Armstrongs face forward style would allow Duran to outbox him in a fierce war.
I think Armstrong vs Duran at Middleweight would be a very simular fight, by the time he reached Middleweight Duran was much more a Boxer-fighter than in his Lightweight days. A top conditioned Middleweight Duran (as he was against Barkley and Hagler) would have been more than a match for many of the Middleweight champs of the past.

Dream Fights
A dream fight that I would have liked to see would be Ruben Olivares against Carlos Zarate. A very tough call, but I would go with Olivares.

Thanks my friend, real interesting match-ups you got there! There are so many you can come up with, different eras, different styles of fighters!(Boxers, sluggers,ko artists;it's endless!)Chacon vs. Graziano may be far fetched though,a middleweight vs. a guy who started as a featherweight and the heaviest Chacon fought,I believe;was lightweight!Oh wellJpreisser wrote:Interesting list. Re: dream fights
The Gatti vs Chacon bout at 130 that someone apparently mentioned a long, long time ago would definitely be a barnburner.
Erik Morales vs Danny Lopez would've been epic.
Teddy Reid vs Ji Hoon Kim
Tomasz Adamek vs Matthew Saad Muhammad
Evander Holyfield vs Joe Frazier
.....just to name a few

Re: dream fights
I wouldn't want to see that. I don't think Gatti would do well against Tszyu at all really. I think he'd win a round or two, but then get broken down and beaten badly on his way to be KO'ed around the 8th or 9th round.ade the grenade wrote:Kostya Tszyu v Gatti?

Re: dream fights
great thread - a bit like the match up thread of about 3 years ago that went on forever. I agree with the posters ideas pretty much
gatti is out of there quicker than that I reckon

Re: dream fights
Hard to disagree with any of the above and especially....
...Chavez v Duran
...Foreman v Tyson
From a purely Brit perspective I would love to have seen the following domestic 'across the ages' scraps take place....
Hatton v Honeyghan at welterweight
Calzaghe v Conteh at LHW
Hamed v McGuigan
Benn v Minter at MW
Cooper v Haye at Cruiserweight
Andries v Mills

Re: dream fights
I'd strongly pick Lloyd to beat ricky at 147 inside 8 rounds
conteh also beats joe but its a close call
hamed at his best has too much power for barry
benn and minter have an almighty struggle but minter boxes on the backfoot to good effect and gets a tough win. the later version of benn - a wiser fighter - reverses the result in a rematch
haye has to avoid the left of cooper if he is to win - he does and cooper is stopped in the 11th
freddy mills boxes Dennis's ears off.

This would've been Chacon's last fight even in the midst of his absolute prime.
