Re: Matthew Saad Muhammad
RIP, what a hard life he had and what a heart he showed. I got the Lopez bout from a tape trader in boxing news in the 80's. What a fight and what a fighter.

Re: Matthew Saad Muhammad
As you can tell by my username I'm a great fan, just found out, absolutely
gutted, so many great fights;" Miracle Matthew" they called him not just for being a
fighter but being abandoned on the street and orphaned as a child, can't think of anything else
to say.

Re: Matthew Saad Muhammad
Another tragic story in boxings long history of tragic stories. Matthew Saad Muhammad died homeless and broke like a long list of ex fighters, many of whom have been hall of famers. I loved watching the battles he had in the ring.
It is hard to think of another sport which makes you question your morals so much for enjoying it.

Re: Matthew Saad Muhammad
A terrible shock to wake up to. Saad was the most exciting fighter of his generation.
Re: Matthew Saad Muhammad
That's a real shame. He was mr excitement.
I saw him in Atlantic City. Seemed a nice guy and had time
For everyone, smiling and seemed very happy to be recognised. His hands were huge and so screwed he couldn't really do
Much but make a fist. Like two huge lumps of coral they were. I didn't try and shake his hand but nodded and said hi

That'll do for me.
1980 fight of the year and this was round of the year.
Warrior. Will be sadly missed.

R.I.P Champ
Re: Matthew Saad Muhammad
Earnie Lopez was Danny's brother, not Yaqui. As far as I recall, they were both part Ute Indian.
Re: Matthew Saad Muhammad
I think Yaqui was the nickname for Earnie - I think I remember it was a tribal name or slang/colloquial term for the tribe.orbtastic wrote:Earnie Lopez was Danny's brother, not Yaqui. As far as I recall, they were both part Ute Indian.
Re: Matthew Saad Muhammad
I've no Internet at home but fairly certain that earnie Lopez was called red. Danny being little red. Earnie was WBA welter champ I think or at least had a couple of cracks at it.
Yaqui was Mexican and went in with all the top names at light heavy and even had a crack at the cruiser title.
Different families.

I always imagined they were brothers, there's a wiki link here for Earnie; Orb

Edit: You are correct Orbtastic - Earnie was a welterweight contender and not Yaqui Lopez, apologies![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)

Re: Matthew Saad Muhammad
I know practically nothing about this guy, but some great tributes. For someone like Bennie to call him the most exciting fighter of his generation is good enough for me as he's a poster I've seen make very good posts before. I'm gonna see what I can find on him in my collection.
RIP.

Sad news indeed.
Saad was my favourite fighter & it's because of him that I got into boxing heavily.
Gone too soon.
