I think Teddy Atlas predicted that Tyson was going to try to get thrown out of there? How would the fight have gone without the DQ?

Re: What if Tyson hadn't bitten Holyfield?
It's disrespectful to refer to Holyfields Ear as a Dairy Queen treat.
What if he didn't "partake" that night? I imagine Mike would have ordered up a different dinner after the fight.
A smoothie of some sort, something easy to digest.

Hard to imagine, Tyson whipped himself up into a real frenzy, he was still shipping butts and leather but he was making Evander work, and if he miraculously could have managed to limit his frenzy of anger and activity to non gastronomical exploits, it's conceivable that the muscle-bound version of Holyfield he was up against would have gassed after 6 or 7 rounds. I remember picking a prime Dempsey over this version of 'Evan Fields' for the same reason in another thread.

Re: What if Tyson hadn't bitten Holyfield?
Same sh!t, different month.
Tyson could never beat Holyfield; at least, not in 1996/97.
Tyson was too mentally weak to prevail against someone as tough & with the indomitable will of Holyfield.
I think the fight would have panned out almost exactly the same way as the first one did, as Tyson wasn't exactly blessed with Joe Calzaghe like stamina either.

Re: What if Tyson hadn't bitten Holyfield?
Tyson in that emotional/angry state probably gasses before Holyfield does, He had lost it before he bit Holyfield IIRC and he hasn't ever shown the emotional control that he could come back/calm down from that. I would expect he has a massive adrenaline dump and is done after that.witherspoon wrote:Hard to imagine, Tyson whipped himself up into a real frenzy, he was still shipping butts and leather but he was making Evander work, and if he miraculously could have managed to limit his frenzy of anger and activity to non gastronomical exploits, it's conceivable that the muscle-bound version of Holyfield he was up against would have gassed after 6 or 7 rounds. If Tyson hadn't bitten Holyfield's ear, he would've been stopped again similar to the first fight.

He was pretty good with his head but he was a very tough and hard hitting competitor - brilliant fighter on his night.
Re: What if Tyson hadn't bitten Holyfield?
Evander is one of my all time favourites. One of the greatest competitors the sport has ever seen. One of the biggest hearts. Reminds me of Matthew Saad Muhammad in many ways. He was naughty with the head though.palooka wrote:evrenb wrote:Holyfield would have been disqualified for tactical head butting..ade the grenade wrote:What if Tyson hadn't bitten Holyfield?

I thought Tyson looked better in the second fight and they were on pretty even terms. I do agree that saving disqualification Evander would have won as Tyson by that time had lost his competitive heart. If they fought in 1986 - 1988 Tyson wins as he was so much better in many ways. . .

Re: What if Tyson hadn't bitten Holyfield?
One of these days someone is going to point out specifically where these mysterious Holyfield headbutts were.
I remember one graphic, terrible butt - and it was Mike Tyson delivering it, deliberately. And he came off second best and was hurt terribly.
Speaking of tenuous excuses for losing, why does no one ever blame Ruddock and Bruno's losses to Tyson on Iron Mike's grabbag of butts, elbows, shoulders, punching after the bell? Why does no one blame Botha's loss to Tyson for the WWF-style armbar? Tyson loved the rough stuff, why does he cry over Holyfield's alleged infringements?

The difference being that Holyfield had a holier than thou reputation and was always of a role model standard. Tyson (and this doesnt make it right of course) always and is well known as being a dirty fighter.Tuan_Jim wrote:One of these days someone is going to point out specifically where these mysterious Holyfield headbutts were.

Ask Michael Dokes' nuts or Alex Stewarts for that matter how clean a fighter Holyfield was or ask Rahman

Re: What if Tyson hadn't bitten Holyfield?
The great Mike Tyson was getting whupped the second time around and he looked for a way or excuse to get out of the fight. He did not wanted to get KO'd again. I would have been the same outcome if the fight continued without all that fiasco. The great Evander Holyfield knew how to fight him. He was more determined and had the more will. There was nothing that Tyson could do that night. It was a waste of time in his mind. But it was not really a waste of time because he made $30 million dollars.
I really believe the reason why Tyson fought Holyfield was because he thought that Holy was washed up.

The Rahman head clash was an accident on both men's parts. Both men's heads were coming together, it's just Holyfield was sensible enough to be not coming facefirst in such close quarters.evrenb wrote:Ask Michael Dokes' nuts or Alex Stewarts for that matter how clean a fighter Holyfield was or ask Rahman
Dokes, Stewart? I remember the fights, not the controversy. Can you expand?
Amazing how Mike Tyson, a dirty, flagrant, bullyboy fighter if ever I saw one, has so successfully managed to besmirch his conqueror's reputation. I challenge anyone to provide any evidence of anyone in any publication or on any broadcast referring to Holyfield as a 'dirty fighter' pre-Nov 1996.
Re: What if Tyson hadn't bitten Holyfield?
I dont care if any publication branded him a dirty fighter...watch the dokes fight and witness one of the worst low blows in history...as my father said at the time..it took a lot of the fight out of dokes...why did evander get dq'd in the olympics?? He fought after the bell against tillis...are u gonna say he is clean of 'peds' too...? If that isnt being dirty i dont know what is!!

Holyfield was certainly a hot-tempered fighter, if you wanted to give it he would give it back, but a deliberately dirty, cheating fighter? No. Not at all.evrenb wrote:I dont care if any publication branded him a dirty fighter...watch the dokes fight and witness one of the worst low blows in history...as my father said at the time..it took a lot of the fight out of dokes...why did evander get dq'd in the olympics?? Dokes fight? You'll do well to name an attacking fighter who throws body shots who hasn't at some point landed a lowblow. It's telling that in a nearly 30 year pro career you have to go right back to 1989. As far as the Olympics, go watch the tape and then come back and justify the disqualification.
Am I going to say he is clean of PEDs? Well, has he been found guilty? Was there a trial I missed? It's idiotic to throw around such accusations. Throw them at Vitali Klitschko, who did actually fail a steroid test.
Re: What if Tyson hadn't bitten Holyfield?
Please watch the low blow that caught Dokes..ruined him. Please do not get me wrong TuanJim - I love Evander and I love his fights. He is truly one of the greatest fighters that ever lived. But what annoys me is that he is extremely respected as a sportsman but he was a surreptitious fouler....he was never penalised for it. . .

Tyson thought it was going to be the easiest 30 million dollars a fighter has ever made.
He was entirely wrong.

It doesn't get more spurious than citing the Evan Fields story. Manna from heaven for Tysonites, who are generally ignorant of, or choose to ignore, that their idol actually paid Razor Ruddock to shut up about steroids and stop insisting he take a test. And that's on the record, not some strange story from a trashy tabloid.evrenb wrote:Please watch the low blow that caught Dokes..ruined him. Regarding PEDS - Has anyone found Evan Fields yet??

I just don't see this pattern of fouling that you do. Lennox Lewis found a way to hit David Tua in the balls. He was hitting and holding Frank Bruno and Michael Grant. Leaning all over Mike Tyson. And yet I wouldn't describe him as a deliberately cheating fighter. Never showed a genuine intent to try cheat, and neither, in my opinion, did Holyfield. Holyfield's great crime it seems to me was to twice crush Mike Tyson physically & mentally. Iron Mike's fruity followers will cite dirty tactics forever (dirty tactics that are impossible to see on the tape) while glossing over Tyson's love of flagrant, frequent and violent fouls. It's a wholly hypocritical stance, inconsistent, and generally spewed out by adolescents or men who write like adolescents. No wonder at all that Teddy Atlas, with his intimate knowledge of Tyson, predicted that he would find a way to get himself DQd in the rematch.

Tyson admitted to it all the steroids, fouling etc...Holyfield will be enshrined as an angel...gooooo onnn!!!!!!!!!!

I am certainly not overlooking Tyson's fouling. Tyson was flagrant with it, famous for it and got dq'd for it!! As I stated earler I am a massive Evander fan. What I do know is that Evander got away with it a fair amount all the while retaining his 'Holy'er than thou reputation'. That Dokes fight was amazing and in the balance in my view. The serious low blow certainly affected Dynamite. While it may have been unltimately the same final result it certainly helped Evander...
