He was pretty wank in most of his Channel 5 fights. He says he would fight better if he had a better class of opponent. I guess this is his chance.

I always though Paul Smith was a good boxer (which he is) but Degale took him out in style - comfortably! I'm not sure some of his subsequent opponents have been as good as Smith but nevertheless he just hasn't looked so good and has ended some fights quite bruised up. Also - and I don't know that it realy matters - but I'm wondering what, if anything these guys will know about their opponent - whereas with Hunter, who has been to the UK plenty, will know a lot about Degale.
His opponent also only started boxing at age 20, yet he has beat some guys he wasn't expected to. One would think an Olympic Gold medallist should be a bridge too far for him - we'll just have to see how much talent the lad has.

Mitchell's opponent has 10 wins inside the distance from a 16-0 record. Holds the US (NABF) title. He could be anything really. At this point however I would be backing Kevin, who is a tough man, and a bit of an underrated boxfighter imo. Especially at Wembley......although against the Greek Aussie he did cite nerves from boxing in front of his "home crowd" at West Ham as particularly unhelpful to him.

Maduma looked moderate against Saul Carreone (DeGale boxed on that bill in Canada) last May, but other than that he has walked through most of the admittedly poor opposition he has faced. He has a very solid look about him and clearly carries power. It is a difficult fight for Mitchell - if he boxes like he did against Prescott then I think he will win, but that is far from guaranteed. This is a step up for Maduma. I couldn't understand the IBF rankings - nobody seems to be at no1 or no2; Marsili is no 3 and must be otherwise occupied, which leaves us with an eliminator between 4 and 5.

Breaking news Mitchell has just failed to make check weight.

Sky sports news quoted IBF rules state that the boxer can't be 11lbs over the limit on the morning after the weigh in.

If he wins he may not be IBF mandatory.

I think this Maduma is going to take him after hearing that.

Mitchell is in trouble tonight. Maduma seems business. I think he wins by TKO.

Just watched some of Maduma now. I'm impressed. Nice skills, speed, fluidity, good pop. I don't rate Mitchell that much. I agree with Columbo that Maduma has too much for Kevin.

I'm picking Maduma and it's going in an accumulator. Will also do variants involving Maduma stoppage.

Now, to assess the chances of Degale's opponent...

He did look moderate and was shook up in that fight at one stage as well, he has looked good in other fights but the opposition has been pretty poor to be honest.

There is nothing to be frightened of here for Mitchell, Maduma has looked decent against poor opposition there is no way of knowing how he will handle someone who actually comes to win.

The check weight thing is whilst careless, merely a very small amount and the rules state its not like a weigh in you cannot take it off.

Don't get me wrong its a bad mistake to make when you have done all the hard work but he still starts favourite on what both have achieved, it won't stop the Vazquez fight being made merely stops him being the automatic contender, money will talk when they make the fight and Eddie will have plenty to throw around after this evening.

I'm glad you were wrong.

Now start a thread stating that West ham WON'T finish top 4 next season ;;-)

I thought you said he was going to get stopped or KO'd?
I'm glad I didn't I took no notice of you and had a flutter or else I'd have been out of pocket...

I bet my home, my life savings and wife and children on the fact that Kevin Mitchell was getting KO'd this evening.

I'm very annoyed at the OP. :witzend:

Well fair play to Degale, by far and away his best performance tonight. Great punching off the ropes for the knockdown, not seen enough of that from him. Kept saying afterwards he's been injured the past 2 years, so hope he can push on from here.

Does anyone think Gonzalez not arriving in the UK till Tuesday had anything to do with the fact that this was such an easy nights work for De Gale?

there's always something different about another country - especially when it's 3000 miles away! The food, the time, the general "feel" of a place! I didn't see the fight. Tbh tho Tuesday doesn't actually sound too late, what's he meant to do, turn up a fortnight before the fight? Maybe 7-10 days would have been better.

Yes. It's for a World title eliminator. You prepare the best way you can.

So much for the all knowing Virgil Hunter. Flying a 3rd of the way around the world less than 100 hours before the biggest fight of his career is a terrible way to handle this fighter.
