wembley 80k. Could it be done again
I was wondering whether we got 80k at wembley due to the actual fight or mainly due to the whole "event" ie: 80,000 people ata fight making it a "must attend" happening for many casual fans.
By all accounts the atmosphere was electric for the main fight and as a show, a spectacle, people seemed to love it.
If they put Groves V Degale or Kahn v Brook, although the actual fights themselves are not 80,000 fan fights, could the mere fact that 80,000 might turn up actually ensure that they would in fact get a full house.
£30 tickets regardless of the view is not much to be part of an amazing night out and experience the atmosphere.
If they went for 85k many people would turn up just to say that they had been at the biggest fight in UK history etc.
Is this feasible or would an attempt to do something like it again be a damp squid that falls flat on it's facew?

Re: wembley 80k. Could it be done again
The only fight I could see it for would be Khan Vs Mayweather. And whether they got 80k would be a push too. No other fight would get that amount imo. Groves and Froch only got that because of the first fight controversy.
Re: wembley 80k. Could it be done again
Think it could happen, but with only a couple of fights.
Khan v mayweather priced right would draw a crowd I reckon
If Joshua wins and dominates the heavies he could draw that many if he was to be repeating Lewis' achievements of having all the major belts at once.
Outside of that, I cannot see it happening not even groves v degale 2 if titles were on the line.

Re: wembley 80k. Could it be done again
I can see maybe two years down the line an unbeaten Anthony Joshua taking on 2 time Heavyweight champ Tyson Fury. That would be big enough for Wembley.
Re: wembley 80k. Could it be done again
I don't see Khan v Mayweather getting close to a Wembley sized crowd.
If Groves had beaten Froch then MAYBE him v Degale could have been developed into a Wembley fight.
As it stands if they made it a night of British/UK and went Quigg v Frampton, Brook v Khan, Fury v Joshua then yeah. But still, maybe not.

Absolutely it can be done again, one moment of controversy and it can be done. Remember Haye vs Chisora was a massive event and I doubt many casual's had heard of Chisora before the press conference brawl.
I'm not saying that it will be a sell out in minutes like Froch vs Groves, but if an event captures the attention for whatever reasons then it will sell out Wembley. No way would Froch vs Groves 1 sell out Wembley, it needed the controversy.

I thought that was a serious post for a minute.

Yes, after the way in which Matchroom promoted this with the sky machine behind them, i think they could do it again. It may sound a bit daft but i think if Matchroom were in charge of the first DeGale v Groves match then they could have and probably would have sold the rematch at Wembley.
This is coming from someone who didn't think it would sell out for Froch Groves. Matchroom know how to get bums on seats, just look what they've done with the sport that has fat people chucking little spears at cork!
If they get a 50/50 fight at a decent level with British or against a world level opponent then i think they can pick their attendance.

Lennox never held all four World titles at the same time.nitro5912 wrote:If Joshua wins and dominates the heavies he could draw that many if he was to be repeating Lewis' achievements of having all the major belts at once.
Re: wembley 80k. Could it be done again
This event was sold by George Groves & Howard Foster. 1. Groves gave the original performance to make it competitive, pick 'em. 2. Foster gave the backstory. 3. Groves sold it, with the psychology, the mind-games, the rubix cubes...
Boxing just needs the WWF factor, the right characters & buzz, and it will sell out any stadium in the world. Combat sports have filled colosseums since the dawn of time.

Mayweather does it against any British fighter.Newport Daz wrote:The only fight I could see it for would be Khan Vs Mayweather. And whether they got 80k would be a push too. No other fight would get that amount imo. Groves and Froch only got that because of the first fight controversy.
Re: wembley 80k. Could it be done again
Audley Harrison could fill it.
Yes He Can!

Re: wembley 80k. Could it be done again
Groves-Degale 2 could definietly do it IMO. The amount of needle *which plays a huge part in interest* those two could generate together would create enough buzz for it I reckon. It's probably one of the few fights at this moment in time id like to see ... that along with Quigg-Frampton, etc.
Re: wembley 80k. Could it be done again
I think hype, controversy and the potential for drama are what’s needed for an 80,000 sell out.
Quality matters to an extent (it has to be “world level”) but a genuine hate-fuelled grudge match that can be hyped to death beforehand is what gets all the casuals excited. Everyone will have an opinion beforehand and then everyone wants a ticket to go and see whose right.
I can’t see Khan v Mayweather delivering this, or Khan v Brook.
There just isn’t the animosity there or the personalities involved.

I agree, no chance either would sell out 80,000. Khan vs Brook would do well to sell out 20K.

I disagree. I think a lot of people are under-estimating Mayweather's popularity in the UK amongst 'casual' boxing fans. I think Khan v Mayweather would totally sell out Wembley stadium (90k+). Casual fans were willing to pay between £250 to £500 to merely meet Mayweather at a dinner show. If tickets are priced reasonably (like they were for Froch v Groves) then this will be a sell out in my opinion.Ian1973 wrote:Loftgroov wrote:I think hype, controversy and the potential for drama are what’s needed for an 80,000 sell out.

I attended a Mayweather press workout at the Peacock gym a few years ago and there were numerous thousands of fans outside the gym hoping to merely get a distant glimpse of Floyd. Many left disappointed. This was for a gym workout which was not advertised or marketed. Furthermore, his popularity and fame has increased since then. Casual fans just want to say 'I was there when Mayweather had his only fight in the UK'

Floyd could sell out Wembley whenever he liked.

Re: wembley 80k. Could it be done again
It all depends on the circumstances of the fight and how it's promoted to the public.
If someone told me 12 months ago that Froch Vs. Groves would pack out Wembley I'd have told them to lay off the crack pipe. Even when the first fight was announced you had fans saying Groves didn't deserve the shot, they weren't interested in watching the fight and it definitely didn't deserve to be a PPV event.
