Easy to be wise after the fact. It's as if we're supposed to have a crystal ball.

Martinez looked shot to bits. I knew he was past it but I wasn't expecting that; his legs were dreadful and seemingly went whenever he was touched.

My prediction was completely wrong. Was realistically over after 1st round as he never recovered his balance if he even had it in first place! :oo

His head seemed clear throughout the fight, even when he was bouncing off the canvas in the first. He just had no legs under him.

Cotto is a solid hitter, was disciplined, and had a good strategy, so he should be commended, but I don't believe he's shown much to suggest that he would do that to a Martinez who was anything but well shot. At times it was almost sad to watch.

Autobarn's dark prognostications of cartilage-related doom for the southpaw came true!

Well, it also massively reinforced Freddie's words in the build-up, RE: Cotto's superior technical boxing ability, & Martinez's lack of same, masked all this time by his athleticism. He did have a nasty habit of getting caught off-balance (the knockdowns vs Pavlik & Macklin & Williams I) & he's often looked splay-legged. It was obvious that his legs were shot to bits, but Freddie was completely right. No traditional defence whatsoever there once the legs were gone, & he was so wide open for those left hooks it wasn't even funny.

Good job Miguel Angel Cotto, world middleweight champion. I'm gonna have to ring my old man up & tell him, he said back when he saw Cotto as a light-welter that he looked like a good middleweight!

Time for Sergio to hobble off into the sunset, I think. I still can't quite believe he got through the first couple of rounds.

Well spotted by your Dad. Cotto looked comfortable and strong and like Martinez said 'My best defense is with my legs not with my arms.'

It looked like he couldn't even get shot power properly from his legs and, actually having to grab and swivel Cotto to get off the ropes rather than moving laterally. His team must have seen it all in the gym.

He showed grit getting back up and in there though

Yeah it was brave, brave stuff from the Argie, gotta give the bloke credit for hanging on in there, the look on his face in the first round as he was wobbling around the ring was a terrible thing to behold.

As shot as he obviously was though Cotto deserves major kudos, that was disciplined intelligent pressure, chin down, hands-up, cut off the ring beautifully, great job by MAC & Freddie.

:box:

PS: For all the pre-fight talk of proscribed knee-braces et cetera, Martinez looked like he'd need some sort of powered exo-skeleton in order to box on...

Cotto was brilliant, if that was ggg that done that to Martinez people wouldn't be so quick to blame injuries for why Sergio got beaten so easily.

If it was GGG in there people would be proclaiming him able to beat fvcking Mecha-Godzilla off the back of that.

The Kazakh is a very good puncher but the hyperbole that Innernetz fans generate around him astonishes me & makes me root desperately against him.

I'll be all right once he gets put into perspective by somebody--I was growing myself a proper anti-Lucas Matthysse thing for a while there, before Garcia shut up some of the louder & stupider of his fanboys--I just have to avoid the subject whilst the hordes are whinnying. I'm too much of a contrarian git to enjoy him atm.

Cotto looked really good was solid and composed but it was plain to see Sergio was crocked.

So who wins out of GGG and Cotto then if that happens after GGG beats Geale? Would be a messy defeat for Cotto I think. Fair play to him for last night though.

Cotto did look very good but Martinez looked truly awful. Someone mentioned the look on Sergio's face in round 1. He breaks something pretty much in every fight and usually has a good poker face but this time the reality of the situation was all over his face.

I don't know how much difference the disallowed leg brace would have made but without it he looked like he had a poorly attached prosthetic leg. I knew a white collar boxer who had some injury that left him with no feeling in one leg below the knee and Martinez looked just like that.

I thought Sergio was too proud to go into another fight injured and he'd taken all the time off he needed to heal properly despite his advancing years. I guess i got that wrong.

But Cotto didn't gas & still boxed with the same confidence he did against Delvin Rodriguez. I was shocked and the effect of his punches. I thought if Sergio's knee went he'd just soak them up and trade and still come off best. So, good for Cotto surely the Mayweather rematch for the linear MW title awaits and when it does Cotto might just become the richest Puerto Rican there is.

To be fair, if people had known the state Martinez's knees would be in on fight night, I suspect the predictions would have been pretty accurate :TU:

Cotto looked as business like as I've ever seen him. Excellent performance.

Fair point.

Also, after beating Chavez XXL, remember a few on the Current Scene were disbelieving regarding the state of Sergio's knee. I think that's something to take away, regarding fighter's injuries: there's some things you just can't shrug off, not at the elite level & all the operations in the world sometimes can't fix major ligament/connective tissue damage, at least not to the level where you need it to compete in boxing.

The first 2 pages on here highlight a common phenomenon of selecting evidence to fit an already formed opinion. Happens in every sport.

He struggled with his mobility but that was to be expected IMO because he was on crutches until dec/jan, I just didn't think he could come back into a fight of that magnitude so quickly.

I felt for Martinez last night he must have knew during the fight that he was finished and injury problems were getting worse, the writings been on the wall for a while with him now,im sure thats his last 4 fights he,s been dropped but having giving Chavez Jr a lesson for 11 rounds i fancied him to outpoint Cotto but having watched 24/7 during the build up i started to feel maybe even a blown up Cotto might still be too much for Sergio but i didnt realise he would look that shot

I kept my same prediction for PTBF Martinez close points :witzend:

And how do you know the evidence was picked to support an already formed opinion rather than being what produced that opinion?

most on the betting thread went for cotto to win to be fair, even the people going for martinez said it was the battle of who has the most left.

Boxing always has a way of making the result glaringly obvious AFTER the fight, you think "oh yeah, why didnt i see this happening before"

Of course Martinez is shot and wont be able to fend off a stong mofo like Cotto,i of course tipped Sergio ;;-)

For me, that has dimished the appeal of Froch vs Chavez.

Martinez has looked there for the taking for a while, only time he's impressed recently was for 11 rounds against Chavez. Now, was it Chavez who made Martinez look good.
